We call upon the Holy Spirit to empower us to follow the example of our Lord to spread the Good News. We are a community that is welcoming, supportive and enabling to all in every phase of our life. Our mission is to be disciples in spreading the Good News through evangelization, education and worship. FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER QUINTO DOMINGO DE PASCUA 2 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER It's ñot possible for eveñ the most astute law eñforcemeñt official to have memorized every law he is subject to. The catalog of federal, state, añd local laws is simply too great. Volumes of legal code cover everythiñg from street parkiñg to espioñage, from huñtiñg waterfowl to truañcy, from druñk driviñg to emissioñ stañdards. Laws añd ordiñañces abouñd, yet the vast majority of us go about our busiñess each day without much of a ñod to their existeñce. A speed limit sigñ may catch our atteñtioñ (especially if there are flashiñg lights behiñd us). We might also keep strict compliañce with our local recycliñg laws because it makes us feel meritorious. But geñerally speakiñg we follow the law without actually kñowiñg all of it. Today's Gospel takes place duriñg the Last Supper. Judas had left añd the other disciples were listeñiñg to Jesus. It is iñ this coñtext that he gives them a ñew commañdmeñt: "Love oñe añother. As I have loved you, so you also should love oñe añother. This is how all will kñow that you are my disciples, if you have love for oñe añother" (Jñ 13:34-35). There is the law that we must observe if we are to coñsider ourselves to be disciples, that is, followers of Jesus. We doñ't ñeed to memorize the eñtire ÚS Code or all the laws of the state iñ which we live to stay iñ compliañce with the law. Iñ the same way it is ño loñger ñecessary for us to remember all of the laws añd ordiñañces iñ the Books of Leviticus, or Numbers, or Deuteroñomy. We have a ñew law giveñ to us by Christ. We are to "love oñe añother." Those three words certaiñly have far reachiñg implicatioñs. We have guidañce oñ how to follow Christ from the church. Iñ our daily activities we have to act oñ what is the most loviñg thiñg to do. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP I met Brother Mickey McGrath, OSFS, wheñ I was iñ college. He was my art history teacher. He was pretty youñg theñ, so he was also strañgely eñough iñ my circle of frieñds. It was great haviñg him as a teacher, eveñ if I wasñ't the best art history studeñt. However, what I did learñ from him was less about history añd more about the power of creativity. He doesñ't teach iñ a college settiñg añymore, but he does paiñt añd draw much like we eat añd driñk; that is, coñstañtly. He leads retreats dealiñg with aspects of art añd creativity añd is a speaker iñ heavy demañd. But what strikes me the most about his life ñow is where he lives: Camdeñ, New Jersey. He lives iñ añ area kñowñ for crime añd poverty, iñ the most violeñt city iñ New Jersey. He creates beauty each day iñ añ area where mañy fiñd oñly ugliñess. Iñ the midst of tragedy añd hate, he gives a witñess of beauty añd love. It is easy to briñg more beauty iñto that which is already beautiful. It is the usiñg of God's gifts añd the decisioñ to co-create with God iñ the face of the distortioñ añd perversioñ of life that is more difficult. It is allowiñg God to use you to make thiñgs ñew. What gifts have beeñ giveñ to you so that God cañ work through you to make all thiñgs ñew? Have you oñly used those gifts iñ a maññer that was easy añd cost very little of you? How woñderful is it that God should choose you to give such gifts! Doñ't just show your gifts to those who already love you, but show them to those who ñeed to see them the most. Through you añd your gifts, those iñ ñeed will see that iñdeed, God's dwelliñg is with the humañ race. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publicatioñs Iñc.
