ctualmente una serie de enfermedades, de las cuales
antes morían miles de personas, ya no son una
amenaza tan común como antes. En muchos casos ésto
se debe a las vacunas. Investigadores dicen que a través
de los años, las vacunas han ayudado a reducir el
número de manifestaciones de enfermedades tales como
el sarampión, paperas e inclusive la gripe. Las vacunas
pueden ayudar a proteger al niño y al adulto de una serie
de enfermedades, incluyendo:
■ sarampión, un virus que llegó a matar a cientos de
personas anualmente.
■ paperas, una enfermedad viral contagiosa.
■ rubeola, otra enfermedad viral.
■ difteria, causado por una bacteria propagada cuando
la persona infectada tose o estornuda.
■ tétano, llamada también mandíbula cerrada porque
produce contracciones musculares dolorosas.
■ pertusis o tosferina.
■ polio, el cual ha dejado lisiados a miles de niños en
los años 40s y 50s.
■ hepatitis B, una enfermedad en el hígado causada
por contacto con la sangre o fluídos corporales de
una persona infectada.
■ hepatitis A, otra enfermedad del hígado; el Centro para
el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC siglas
en inglés) dice que la vacuna contra de la hepatitis A se
aplica en áreas donde existe alto riesgo de contagio o
en individuos en riesgo de contraerla.
■ varicela, considerada enfermedad de niños. Sin
embargo los adultos que nunca la han contraído
pueden ser vacunados para prevenirla en el futuro ya
que la varicela puede ser severa en personas mayores.
■ las enfermedades relacionadas con el HIB (Haemofilus
influenzae tipo B), que incluye infecciones respiratorias,
meningitis, y otras.
■ neumonía, una enfermedad potencial preocupante.

L
a obesidad no sólo aumenta en los adultos sino también
en nuestros niños. Las estadísticas demuestran que
casi el 20 por ciento de niños Estadounidenses sufren de
obesidad y el 80 por ciento crecerán como adultos
obesos. Los niños obesos sufren de problemas sociales y
emocionales y son más propensos a prolongarlos en edad
adulta. Así que la mejor estrategía es detener la marea
ahora y fomentar en los niños una buena alimentación y el
ejercicio diario. El Gobierno Federal está en proceso de
ayudar si el Senado Estadounidense aprueba un proyecto
de ley para controlar la obesidad, autorizando $60 millones
para desarrollar programas que promuevan una buena
nutrición y condición fisica.

Kids at Risk for Obesity
O
besity is not just on the rise among American adults,
but children as well. Statistics show nearly 20 percent
of U.S. children are obese and 80 percent will grow up to
be fat adults. Overweight children also suffer from social
and emotional problems which they tend to carry into
adulthood. The best strategy is to stem the tide now by
encouraging children to eat a healthy diet and to get
plenty of exercise every day. Help is on the way from the
federal government as well. The U.S. Senate passed a bill
on obesity, authorizing a $60 million pilot project. This project will help communities develop programs to address the
problem by promoting good nutrition and physical fitness.
■ Reduce trips to fast food restaurants to once a week
or less
■ Replace fried foods with baked and broiled varieties
■ Limit snacking, especially on chips and candy
■ Keep plenty of fresh fruit and veggies on hand and
serve with dipping sauces or peanut butter to make
them more palatable
