on higher education
Textea, Choca” en universitarios

Ver un smartphone, del tamaño
de un automóvil, remolcado por
una grúa y tan quebrado, como
si hubiera sido víctima de un accidente de tránsito es impactante.
E impactar es exactamente el
propósito del Departamento de
Transporte de Texas (TxDOT)
que el lunes lanzó de nuevo
su campaña “Platica, Textea,
Choca” (Talk, Text, Crash).
En esta ocasión, el TxDOT
eligió como lugar de lanzamiento
St. Mary´s University, pues el
gigantesco celular es parte de
una exhibición móvil que visitará
diferentes colegios y univer-
sidades de Texas para educar a
los estudiantes a no distraerse
cuando manejan.
Además del celular gigante,
la exhibición móvil incluye un
simulador que permite al usuario
sentarse detrás del volante y
experimentar cómo se perjudica
la atención cuando se maneja un
automóvil al recibir una llamada
telefónica, responder un texto o
enviar un correo electrónico.
Asimismo, incluye imágenes
es historias de texanos que murieron o resultaron heridos de
gravedad durante accidentes
automovilísticos.
Una historia real
Para reforzar el impacto de esta
campaña, Mike Myers (origi
nario de Austin), quien perdió
a su hija Elana en un accidente
automovilístico de un solo auto
en 2014, contó su historia el día
del lanzamiento de la campaña
“Platica, Textea, Choca”.
Elana, de 18 años, era estudian
te de Texas Tech University. Jovial, con aspiraciones a modelo y
sueños de graduarse en negocios.
“El 9 de abril de 2014, mi hija
Elana regresaba a casa después
del colegio y estábamos muy
emocionados de tenerle en casa.
Pero en vez de que ella se presentara a la puerta, fue el sheriff
que vino a decirme que ella había
fallecido en un accidente de un
solo vehículo. El impacto inmediato y la depresión inmediata

La “epidemia” de la obesidad
y la diabetes sigue en aumento en
el condado de Bexar.
Casi 1 millón de adultos (el 71
por ciento) en el condado de Bexar tienen sobrepeso o son obesos.
Esta condición de peso pone en
riesgo la salud de la población
e incrementa la probabilidad de
que los residentes desarrollen
enfermedades crónicas u otros
problemas de salud. Una de ellas:
la diabetes.
En el 2014, el 14.2 por ciento
de los adultos en el condado
fueron diagnosticados con diabetes (tipo 1 o tipo 2), el cual es
más alto que el porcentaje del estado de Texas (10.6 por ciento) y
mucho más alto que el promedio
nacional de 9.3 por ciento.
Si las tendencias continúan,
las autoridades de salud estiman
que el número de americanos con
diabetes se duplicará o triplicará
para el 2050.

conocer las cifras alarmantes de

Esta tragedia tomó aproximadamente cuatro segundos de principio a fin. Nunca sabré qué llevó
a causar el accidente y pienso en
eso todo el tiempo”, sostiene la
madre en su historia.

The Diplomás project is committed to eliminating the education
gap for Latino students and held a
policy summit on Friday morning
that briefed on issues that relate to
post-secondary readiness, access
and attainment.
Diplomás is an effort to increase
the crop of college-ready students
and unites with 16 cross-sector
partners including five independent
school districts, the Alamo Colleges, University of Texas at San
Antonio (UTSA), Texas A&M
University in San Antonio, community based organizations and
the local chambers of commerce.
The P16 Plus Council is also providing support and data analysis
to the project to drive progress on
the strategic initiatives designed to
prepare and persist for gain higher
education.
“Many of our students struggle
and we do not always know is how
to help them or what the problem
is,” explained Associate Dean
for the College of Public Policy
at UTSA Dr. Francine Romero.
“Clearly the Diplomás project is
an innovative effort and it’s systematic, objective and will make
a difference. We are seeing the
difference through the efforts. We
are normally not equipped with
these challenges and so much needs
to be done before they can get to
college.”
At hand to discuss the issue also
included Legislative Staff Attorney
for the Mexican American Legal
Defense and Educational Fund
(MALDEF) Celina Moreno and
National Director of Policy, IDRA
David Hinojosa and State Rep. Diego Bernal (D-San Antonio).
In his keynote address, the State
Rep. Bernal recalled one of his
professors at the University of
Michigan used a racial slur that
made him question his direction after class; however, that experience

La Prensa Newspaper would like to congratulate Team Captain Reed Eggleston (Senior, Marshall High
School), Brendan Downs (Senior, Warren High School), Hector Iruegas (Senior, Warren High School),
Carlson Lindley (Senior, Homeschool), Eli Ross (Senior, Homeschool) and Kyle Volz (Senior, Alamo
Heights High School), of the Alamo Academies Blue Team as they advance to the National Finals of
CyberPatriot, the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. What started out with 3,379 teams is
now down to 28 teams. The Alamo Academies Blue Team is one of 12 finalist teams in the Open High
School Division. Each student received a leather bomber jacket, an iPad, a $1,000 scholarship and a full
scholarship to attend Hallmark University. On April 10, the teams will travel to Baltimore, Md., where
they will compete in a series of high stakes cyber challenges that will put their skills to the ultimate test.
At the end of the four-day event, National Champions in each of the three divisions (Open Division, All
Service Division, and Middle School Division) will be crowned.

conductores.
En el 2015, Texas registró
103,576 choques relacionados
con la distracción. Eso representa
un aumento de 3 por ciento con
respecto al 2014.
Los choques y muertes relacionadas con conductores
distraídos son mayores entre los
conductores jóvenes de 16 a 34
años de edad.
Asimismo, Jeff Moseley,
Comisionado de Transporte
de Texas, dijo que en 2015 las
distracciones de los conductores
mataron a 463 texanos y lesiona
ron de gravedad a otros 3,076.
“Los texanos están muriendo
en nuestros caminos y carrete
ras simplemente porque otros
conductores no pueden esperar
hasta detenerse para ver su correo
electrónico o hacer llamadas.
Ese texto, mensaje o llamada
no es tan importante como para

TxDOT sostiene que el uso del
celular es la principal distracción
de los conductores al manejar,
pero también señala que las
siguientes actividades son riesgosas: revisar correo electrónico,

sociales, comer, maquillarse,
peinarse, leer, ver un video, programar un sistema de navegación
o ajustar el radio, reproductor de
CD u otro dispositivo de audio.

y programas para promover un
estilo de vida más saludable.
“Tenemos Siclovía, Farmers’
Markets, más parques, lugares
donde las personas pueden ir a
hacer ejercicio que no había antes, entonces sí estamos haciendo
cambios”, agregó Harriott. “Lo
mejor que una persona afectada
puede hacer es hacer el esfuerzo
de perder peso y de comenzar
a hacer ejercicio físico y, definitivamente, si necesita ayuda
tenemos dos programas que
ofrecemos aquí en Metro Health
y otro que se ofrece a través del
YMCA”.

participar en uno de estos programas pueden llamar completamente gratis a Metro Health

Las clases tienen una duración
de seis semanas y los que se involucran y participan reciben una
membresía en el YMCA gratis
por tres meses.
Los datos también encontraron
que el porcentaje de sobrepeso y
la obesidad entre los hombres es
más alto que el porcentaje entre
las mujeres, afectando el 78 por
ciento de los hombres y el 65 por
ciento de las mujeres. Asimismo,
los hispanos tienen mayor probabilidad de tener sobrepeso o ser

En relación con los niveles de
ingreso, los residentes con un
ingreso anual de $25,000 o menos
tiene una mayor probabilidad de
ser obesos. Entre los adultos que
ganan menos de $25,000, el 42
por ciento son obesos en comparación del 29 por ciento de los
que ganan $50,000 o más.
La población de bajos niveles
de educación e ingresos también
están vinculadas a un mayor
riesgo de desarrollar la diabetes.
Casi el cuarto de los adultos diagnosticados con diabetes tienen
un ingreso anual de $25,000 o
menos y no se graduaron de la
preparatoria. Esta enfermedad ha
incrementando peligrosamente en
los últimos años. En total, la diabetes afecta a uno de cada siente
adultos en el condado de Bexar.

Comentarios... El odio es contagioso

Trump me
dijo, “Regrésate a
Jorge Ramos
Univisión”,
que son palabras cargadas de
odio y pocos segundos después,
tras haber sido expulsado de una
conferencia de prensa en Iowa,
uno de los seguidores de Trump
me gritó: “Lárgate de mi país”.
Interesante su comentario
porque, al igual que él y Trump,
yo también tengo pasaporte de Estados Unidos. Estoy convencido
que si Trump no me hubiera dicho
nada, su simpatizante tampoco
me habría gritado e invitado a
salir de Estados Unidos. El odio
es contagioso.
Desde que Trump lanzó su
candidatura presidencial el 16
de junio del año pasado, he notado muchas muestras de odio en
contra de inmigrantes en Twitter y Facebook. Cada vez que
escribo un comentario, publico
una columna o participo en una
entrevista, mis cuentas se llenan
de ofensas y groserías que no
había escuchado en mis 33 años
en Estados Unidos.
Trump ha creado un espacio
que es el paraíso de los troles;
y tanto activa como legitima los
prejuicios de muchos estadounidenses. Esto se llama teoría de
la activación. Lo aprendí de un
magnífico artículo de Sanam Malik del Center for American Progress (aquí: ampr.gs/22zRzOD).
“Cuando figuras públicas en posiciones de influencia promueven
el odio, algo dañino ocurre”,
escribió Malik. “Ellos legitiman
conductas socialmente inaceptables, normalizan el odio y por lo
tanto promueven la violencia”.
Primero fue Trump quien dijo
una total falsedad: “Cuando
México envía a su gente, no están
enviando a los mejores... Ellos
traen drogas. Ellos traen el crimen. Son violadores. Y algunos,
supongo, son gente buena. Y ahora muchos estadounidenses están
repitiendo esas mentiras. (Sí,
son mentiras: La gran mayoría
de los inmigrantes mexicanos en
Estados Unidos no son narcotraficantes, criminales o violadores).
El mismo efecto negativo también podría ocurrir contra los
musulmanes que viven en Estados Unidos. Trump llamó el 7
de diciembre por un cierre total
y completo a los musulmanes
que quieran entrar a Estados
Unidos. En marzo de este año,
dijo a CNN: “Creo que el Islam
nos odia”.
Las palabras importan. Tienen
consecuencias. Ese tipo de dis-
cursos solo refuerza los estereotipos y prejuicios que algunos
estadounidenses ya tienen contra
los musulmanes.
En las consecuencias de los
ataques terroristas en París, se
triplicó el número de crímenes de
odio en contra de musulmanes en
Estados Unidos, con base en un
análisis de la Universidad Estatal
de California, en San Bernardino,
citado en The New York Times.
Es muy peligroso cuando un
candidato presidencial ataca a un
grupo étnico — como Trump lo
ha hecho en contra de inmigrantes

ese grupo. Y no veo, por ahora,
ninguna disminución en ese tipo
de discursos.
Esta es una de las campañas
presidenciales más divisivas y
radicales que me ha tocado cubrir
como periodista. Y si no hacemos
bien nuestro trabajo, el riesgo
para el país es enorme. Tenemos
que hacer preguntas más duras a
Trump, repetir más preguntas y
retarlo constantemente. Hay que
denunciar, y con fuerza, cualquier
expresión de racismo y sexismo,
venga de donde venga.
Como reporteros no podemos
cometer los mismos errores que
antes de la guerra en Irak en mar-
zo del 2003. Debimos haber presionado mucho más al entonces
presidente George W. Bush para
que explicara dónde estaban las
supuestas armas de destrucción
masiva y para que hablara de sus
planes después de la invasión de
Irak. Miles de muertos después,
todavía hoy estamos sufriendo los
efectos de esa mala aventura militar y de nuestras pocas preguntas.
Igual ocurrió en Venezuela
en 1998. Hugo Chávez ganó las
elecciones presidenciales con
muy poca resistencia de la prensa,
gobernó como un caudillo y se
atornilló en el poder hasta su
muerte en 2013. El fenómeno
mediático de Chávez en Vene
zuela tiene muchos puntos en
común con el de Trump en Estados Unidos.
Trump, como el fallecido
Chávez, está usando el odio para
avanzar políticamente. Trump
lo ha hecho contra inmigrantes mexic anos y musulmanes;
Chávez lo hizo contra sus opositores políticos y todo aquel que no
pensaba como él. Y una vez que
el odio se contagia, es muy difícil
sacarlo del corazón.

Just a Thought: Fiesta 2016 is here
The 125th
celebration of
Fiesta is now
only four days
away with
opening ceremonies, ThursSteve Walker day at 6 p.m.
in front of the
Alamo. Fiesta Royalty and special
guests like the Air Force Band of
the West will perform along with
other types of entertainment.
Adjacent to the Alamo stage
is the sell or trade of Fiesta pins
and medals at Pin Pandemonium
on the Alamo grounds near the
Main Gazebo, which kicks off the
festivities at 5 p.m.
Then there are the opening
ceremonies of the Carnival behind
the Alamodome with “thrills and
chills to fill the air.” Glittering
lights, a variety of rides and
a wide assortment of foods in
downtown San Antonio make
the carnival experience a perennial favorite of Fiesta-goers. The
carnival will run every night from
April 14-April 24 in the evening
with various times ranging from
5 p.m. or 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., 11
p.m. or midnight. The revenue
from this event helps support the
activities of Fiesta.
Taste of New Orleans begins on
April 15 in the Sunken Garden at
Brackenridge Park. If you want to
experience unique and exquisite
New Orleans food, don’t miss this
three-day fest, alive and kickin’
with the tastes and sounds of
‘Nawlins.
At this event, you can experience Creole and Cajun dishes
like gumbo, crawfish, shrimp
etouffee, red beans and rice,
boudin and many other favorite
cuisines of New Orleans.
The event features toe tappin’
music from Dixieland to Smooth
Jazz and Zydeco, straight from
the Crescent City. The Sunken
Garden is ADA accessible. Blankets, strollers and folding chairs
are welcome.
The San Antonio Zulu Association/SAZA Commission Inc.,
which sponsors the event, is a
benevolent not-for-profit organization founded with the mission
to assist the greater San Antonio
community. The organization
reaches out to the community by
providing youth the opportunity
to further their education through
scholarships.
For the past eight years, I have
been actively covering Fiesta
events by shooting photos for
my photo blog Walker Report
and also for La Prensa. I begin
with the opening ceremony in the
Alamo Plaza and carnival, move
on to the crowning of El Rey Feo
on Friday and the Taste of New
Orleans on Saturday, followed
by the River Parade, the Battle
of Flowers and various events as
Fiesta progresses.
With the River Parade on the
horizon, as well as the Battle of
Flowers (my favorite), I might
see some of you out there in the
streets with my camera and press
pass. If so, be sure to say hello and
enjoy Fiesta.
I shared in last week’s column
that this year’s Grand Marshal
for the Battle of Flowers Parade
is none other than international
singer and motivational speaker
Dr. Patsy Torres, who I have
known for over 20 years. I have
also written about her for La
Prensa twice in the past. I look
forward to covering her in photos
at the Battle of Flowers Parade
this year.

No va a ser una tarea fácil.
Una vez iniciada la convención,

delegados de Trump apoyarán la
candidatura de Trump. Lo mismo
sucederá con Cruz y Kasich.
En consecuencia, en la primera
rueda de votos ninguno de los
candidatos logrará alcanzar el
número mágico de 1237 votos.
Entonces se procederá a otra
rueda de votos. A diferencia
de la primera, en esta rueda los
delegados tienen la capacidad de
cambiar de postura y votar por
el candidato de su preferencia.
Claro que la mayoría sigue las
indicaciones de sus jefes, quienes
seguramente ya han cimentado
alianzas con otros candidatos.
Lo más probable es que los
delegados de John Kasich, Marco
Rubio, Jeb Bush y otros candidatos pertenecientes al establishment republicano apoyen la candidatura de Ted Cruz. Claro que
este apoyo sería el resultado de
unas alianzas que se entretejieron
debajo del cuadrilátero político.
Puede también ocurrir que
Kasich sea el nominado. En este
sentido, Cruz, por alguna razón
incomprensible, tendría que
ceder sus delegados. Este hecho
es muy improbable debido a que
el Senador de Texas manifestó
que existiría una “revuelta de los
votantes republicanos” si Kasich
es elegido.
Otro escenario posible es que
los delegados de Kasich apoyaran
la candidatura de Trump. Aquí
tendría que haber una justificación poco ética. Kasich tendría
que aceptar el ofrecimiento de la
vicepresidencia por su apoyo o el
gobernador de Ohio tendría que
haber perdido la cabeza.
Si pensamos que el proceso
de las primarias republicanas
fue un torrente de insultos, la
convención republicana será
una gigantesca catarata política
de discordia. Motivado por la
sed de venganza, Trump puede
incluso ceder sus delegados a

Así, la convención republicana, misma que se llevará a
cabo en Cleveland, Ohio, entre
el 18 y 21 de julio, tendrá todos
los ingredientes de un proceso
dislocado, de trifulcas internas
y alianzas viciadas.
Como en una de las esquinas
estará postrada la figura irritable
de Donald Trump, el convite
republicano garantiza ser un
verdadero drama político, donde
los insultos volarán por doquier y
los golpes bajos serán la esencial
de juego político. En fin, no va a
ser apto para cardiacos.
Tradicionalmente, el candidato
que alcanza o sobrepasa el número mínimo de delegados (1237)
es coronado como candidato del
Partido Republicano. Empero,
como se espera que ninguno
de los candidatos –ni Donald
Trump, ni Ted Cruz, ni John
Kasich— logrará acaparar ese

Los hispanos/latinos corren
mayor riesgo de sufrir disfunción
cardiaca, pero raramente están
al tanto de tener problemas de
bombeo en el corazón que pueden
causar insuficiencia cardiaca, de
acuerdo con una nueva investigación publicada en el diario
Circulation de la American Heart
Association.
Los investigadores descubrie
ron que alrededor de la mitad de
los 1,818 adultos del estudio, hispanos/latinos de mediana y mayor
edad, tenía disfunción cardiaca; sin
embargo, menos de 1 de cada 20
participantes sabía que tenía un
problema.
La disfunción cardiaca es especialmente seria porque se puede
volver insuficiencia cardiaca, una
enfermedad crónica en la cual se
bombea menos sangre al corazón
que la que el cuerpo necesita para
mantenerse sano.
“La percepción ha sido que los
hispanos/latinos son un grupo con
bajo riesgo de sufrir disfunción
cardiaca, pero eso no es verdad”,
dijo Carlos J. Rodríguez, M.D.,
M.P.H., autor principal del estudio
y profesor asociado de medicina y
epidemiología en el Wake Forest
Baptist Medical Center en Winston-Salem, Carolina del Norte.
Rodríguez mencionó que el
único gran estudio adicional sobre
la disfunción cardiaca llevado a
cabo en los Estados Unidos analizó
a una población caucásica en su
mayoría no hispana de gente ma
yor y descubrió que alrededor de
un tercio tenía disfunción cardiaca.
En el ECHO-SOL (Echocardiographic Study of Hispanic/Latinos), los investigadores utilizaron
imágenes ultrasónicas del corazón
para identificar la disfunción cardiaca en adultos de 45-74 años de
edad que viven en Bronx, Chicago,
Miami y San Diego. Entre los participantes con las tasas más altas
de factores de riesgo de disfunción
cardiaca:
La mitad era obesa; la mitad
tenía presión arterial alta; dos
tercios tenía diabetes; dos tercios
reportó niveles bajos de actividad
física; y un quinto fumaba.
Los investigadores indicaron
que estos factores de riesgo, junto
con ataque cardiaco, son los mismos factores de riesgo para la
progresión de disfunción cardiaca
a insuficiencia cardiaca.
Dados los hallazgos del estudio, Rodríguez comentó que los

llevar a cabo un “alto nivel de
vigilancia” al monitorear la salud
de sus pacientes hispanos/latinos
y un “alto umbral para intensificar
las terapias preventivas para evitar
la posibilidad de una insuficiencia
cardiaca más adelante”.
Agregó que entre más pronto
sea la intervención, mejor, y que
algunos estudios han sugerido que
la disfunción cardiaca puede ser
revertida al reducir los factores
de riesgo.
ECHO-SOL diagnosticó dos
tipos de disfunción cardiaca:
disfunción sistólica del ventrículo
izquierdo (LVSD) y disfunción
diastólica del ventrículo izquierdo
(LVDD).
En la LVSD, el ventrículo izquierdo, la cámara más grande
del corazón, no bombea sangre
al cuerpo con tanta fuerza como
debería.

En la LVDD, el ventrículo
izquierdo está muy rígido cuando
se relaja entre latidos para juntar
suficiente sangre en su cámara.
Los investigadores dijeron que
la prevalencia del segundo tipo,
LVDD, fue particularmente alta
entre los estadounidenses latinos de origen centroamericano,
quienes mostraron casi el doble de
riesgo que los estadounidenses de
origen mexicano. Los investigadores mencionaron que no saben si
la diferencia se explica con aspectos genealógicos o ambientales.
Rodríguez dijo que debido a
que no se les ha puesto mucha

gadores planean darle seguimiento
a los participantes del ECHO-SOL

“Debido a que los hispanos/
latinos son la minoría étnica más
grande en los Estados Unidos, con
más de 51 millones de personas,
pueden causar un gran impacto
en la epidemia de insuficiencias
cardiacas”, dijo.

entusiasmada con este evento
unificador, que creará oportunidades para informar a otros sobre
los amputados que viven en su

“Muestre su Valía” el 23 de abril, en
el que podrán usar y exhibir sus prótesis con orgullo, y publicar fotos en
las plataformas de redes sociales de
la Coalición de Amputados.
“El concepto es simple”, explica
Chenoweth. “Al usar y dejar ver sus
prótesis, los amputados muestran
su valor y temple para afrontar
una situación difícil. Merecen un
reconocimiento por su valía y su
fortaleza al sobrellevar la pérdida
de una extremidad”.
La Coalición de Amputados
celebra el Mes de Concientización
sobre la Pérdida de Extremidades
no solo para concientizar sino
también para divulgar información
relacionada con la prevención, en
especial a las personas que corren
un riesgo más alto.

“La diabetes de tipo 2 es un
problema muy grave en las comunidades latinas, y sabemos que
más del 60 por ciento del total de
amputaciones son a causa de la
diabetes”, afirma la presidenta y
directora ejecutiva de la Coalición
de Amputados, Susan Stout. “Es por
esta razón que nos comprometemos
a suministrar toda la información posible en español sobre cómo se vive

Ferguson to retire
New York Jets left tackle D’Brickashaw
Ferguson, a former Pro Bowl player known
for his remarkable durability, retired on
Friday at the age of 32, according to league
sources. Ferguson, the fourth overall pick in
2006, has no known injury issues. He played
every game in 10 seasons -- 167 consecutive
starts, including playoffs.

Forward Jason Johnson scored
two goals in the first 10 minutes,
while Fejiro Okiomah added one
as a substitute.
“We came out to a very fast
start and got a couple of goals
and had to hold on to the lead the
rest of the match,” said SAFC
Head Coach Darren Powell. “To
get three points on the road in
our opening game, the team is
very pleased.”
SAFC got a strong start early
in the match when a string of
passes at the edge of the hosts’
box ended with a cool finish
from Johnson, earning him the
first goal of the night and the
first ever in club history. The
forward struck again just seven
minutes later after capitalizing
on an awkward bounce over the
defense that found him one-onone with opposing keeper.
“Two goals early on was a
really good thing for the team
knowing that we are a good
defensive squad,” said Johnson.
“It was huge especially away
from home and the first game
in franchise history. I think that
is a brilliant way to start off a
season.”
The half ended with San Antonio leading by two after a strong
showing both defensively and
offensively.
In the second half, San Antonio FC created multiple chances
through the wings, but no cross
was met with a dangerous shot
on target. Despite a good spell
of possession for Sounders 2,
SAFC substitute Fejiro Okiomah put his name on the score
sheet, burying his shot following
a deflection in the box only two
minutes after coming on.
The club received some extra
support with around 30 members of SAFC supporter groups
the Crocketteers and Mission
City 118 on hand to cheer on the
club in Seattle.
“Our fan support in Seattle
was absolutely fantastic,” said
Powell. “They sang for 90
minutes and from the moment
the players walked out until the
very end, so that really helped
the guys. We hope to see a few
more this weekend, but if they
can make that noise, what an
atmosphere we can create at
Toyota Field”.
The victory follows a very
successful preseason campaign
that saw SAFC get six wins and
two draws. The Sounders 2 will
look to get their first win of the
2016 season next week when
they host Rio Grande Valley FC
in Washington (State).
San Antonio will take three
points home ahead of their
second match of the season.
The team will look to continue
its unbeaten run in their home
opener as they host Swope Park
Rangers at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Asimismo el defensor Nate

quinta victoria, añadió: “En un
partido tan cerrado como este
contra Barracuda lo único que
podíamos hacer era pasarnos

SAFC forward Jason Johnson named to USL Team of the Week
San Antonio forward Jason
Johnson has been named to the
USL Team of the Week for his performance against Seattle Sounders
2 on April 3. Johnson scored two
goals in his debut with the club,
leading the team to a 3-0 victory
over Seattle.
SAFC got a strong start early in
the match when Johnson scored
twice in the opening 10 minutes
of SAFC’s inaugural contest. The
Jamaican was found by a through
ball from Greg Cochrane in the
third minute, and buried his shot
past a diving goalkeeper. Johnson’s second came minutes later
when he rounded the keeper oneon-one and simple passed the ball
into the net.
“Getting two goals early on was
a really good thing for the team
knowing that we are a good defensive squad,” Johnson said. “It was
huge especially away from home
and the first game in franchise history. I think that is a brilliant way

In the league’s second season, I
played for John Contreras’s The
Wolfpack and assisted to capture
the championship there.
The next step was creating our
own team. We started with the
name of the Indians and shortly
changed to the name of HIGHSOX. As a team, we are currently
working hard to capture our fourth
league championship.
I have been given the privilege
to throw out the ceremonial first
pitch on separate occasions. I was
also the winner of the First Home
Run Derby in the league’s history. The winner of the leagues’
Second Home Run Derby was
Esteban Raygoza, and we will
find out this July who will win the
Third Home Run Derby.
As y’all can tell, I have dedicated a lot of time and effort to
baseball and the Tex-Mex IBL.
With the support of my family and
friends, I will continue to put a lot
of time and effort into baseball
and the league. Along with Vice
President Gabriel Cardenas, we
will continue to bring competitive
baseball to San Antonio, as well
as the surrounding towns with
an occasional visit by Mexican
teams.
April 3 league results: In the
morning game, Jonathan Vaquera
of the Neighbors beat his former
team the High Sox 11-0. The
Neighbors’ hitters exploded in the
first inning of the game scoring
eight runs. After some defensive
adjustments by the High Sox, the
Neighbors acquired three more
runs the remaining of the game.
One run would have been enough
for the Neighbors as High Sox
were shutout.
Game two was way more competitive as the Desperados made
they return to the Tex-Mex IBL.
Facing the Texas Juggernauts,
the Desperados held the ground
after taking a season off. The
final score was 4-3 Juggernauts,
as pitcher David Blount held on
for the win.
The third game of the day was
a little bit lopsided as the Tecolotes are off to a 2 and 0 season.
Tecolotes Tyler Cales took the
win 12-0. Javier Arrieta is off to
a good start for Tecolotes as he hit
his second home run in consecutive games. Bobcats were off and
enjoying a nice spring weather.
Schedule for Week 3: At 9 a.m.,
1-1 Tigers will face 1-1 Neighbors. At 12 noon, 1-0 Bobcats
will face 0-1 Desperados. Game
3 of the day will be 2-0 Tecolotes
vs. 1-1 High Sox at 3 p.m. Juggernauts will take a break with
1-1 record. All games are held
at Capitol Park, 11793 Bulverde

Greetings, my names is Eduardo Rodriguez, better known as
Eddy. I am the current president
of the Tex-Mex Independent
Baseball League.
I was asked by José Franco (La
Prensa sports editor) to be a guest
columnist for La Prensa. The goal
of this and future articles is to
give fans and friends updates on
our league as well as recognition
to our players that excel. Let me
start of by sharing some history
about myself.
I was born in Uvalde, Texas on
Sept. 29, 1977. I am a proud son
of Mexican parents who sacrificed
a lot to give my brothers, sisters
and myself a better life. Growing
up, I recall making the All-Stars
just about every year. As a teenager and migrant worker, I was
never too tired to play baseball
after a long day of working in
the fields.
I attended Uvalde High School
and was an Uvalde Coyote. During my senior year, I received
a baseball scholarship to Paris
Junior. College in Texas. I played
for a year in college but felt I
needed to hit the workforce instead. I worked in different jobs
and Sunday’s were for church and
baseball.
During this time, I would travel
to San Antonio with a team called
Los Indios de Roberto Rodriguez.
We would play at Mr. Manuel
Cisnero’s Colt 45 Independent
Baseball League.
After winning a couple of
championships with that team,
Mr. Juan “Pachin” Martinez invited a couple of teammates and I
to play for the Club Nava, located
north of the state of Coahuila,
México. We were able to bring
Nava a championship during our
second season.
At age of 24, I was back in San
Antonio for the very first Caballos
de Alfaro Team which was assembled by my brother Rick
Rodriguez and Ramon Moreno.
The Caballos acquired quite a few
championships during their stint.
At age 25, I decided to join the
United States Marine Corps. My
MOS was a 6113 Helicopter Mechanic. I lost most of my primer
baseball years to serve our country, but I do not regret it one bit.
During my enlistment, I made
the All-Marine Corps Softball
team, traveling for six months,
playing softball and representing the Marine Corps. After
serving a five year term and two
deployments, I was honorably
discharged and I am considered
an OEF, OIF veteran. In 2008, I
exited the Marines and have made
San Antonio my home ever since.
I continued and continue to
work in aviation. Slowly but surely, I was back playing baseball. I
started back up with a team called
the Braves managed by Mr. Frank
Torres. As I had a good comeback
season, I got a phone call from
the Tecolotes ball team, ran by
Gilbert Rodriguez Sr. I played
with them for a couple of seasons
prior to Tex-Mex IBL being created. The inaugural season was Eddy Rodriguez, Tex-Mex IBL
in 2010. I sat out due to injuries. president. (Photos, Franco)

Johnson joined SAFC in March
of this year from the Chicago Fire
of Major League Soccer (MLS)
where he spent the majority of
the 2015 season, making 20 appearances and scoring two goals.
Johnson, a Generation Adidas
player, was originally selected by
the Houston Dynamo (MLS) in
the first round (13th overall) of the
2013 MLS SuperDraft.

Team of the Week Bench after he
scored his first goal against Seattle
to seal the win, just two minutes
after coming on as a second-half

A taste of Belgium: La Frite carries Southtown delights

San Antonio continues to expand on its European roots with
the help of many chefs who would
like to move beyond the city’s
Tex-Mex legacy.
La Frite Belgian Bistro, located
at 728 S. Alamo St, is a restaurant
that is interested in expanding the
palette of locals by inviting them
to try popular dishes such as fries,
mussels and even chocolate.
Miles Donnelly, chef and owner
of the bistro, decided to give up
medical school to keep the restaurant afloat seven years ago and
decided it was time to take a risk
to provide a menu that gives him
a taste of home.
“I began as a server here and
then the restaurant came up for
sale… I found it so exciting, how
this could have so much potential. I said, ‘Who needs medical
school?’ I decided to stay here and
it came out great,” Donnelly told
La Prensa. “It was an ode to my
family heritage when we bought
it, and we kind of dove into the
muscles and the culture of Bel-
gium, which also included frites.”
La Prensa recently stopped by
La Frite to try a different kind of
creative culinary dish that would
bring many to try a new kind of
dish. Let me just say that I was in
for many surprises.
The appetizer of the night included Salad de Fruit et Fromage
which was a mixed green salad
with a pear in the middle, gorgonzola cheese and a balsamic
reduction. Although the taste
of the Gorgonzola cheese was
overpowering, the pear carried a
balanced to the salad providing a
crunch and sweet flavor, some-
thing you would not think would
come together.
One popular dish that you must
try from La Frite to taste something different and delectable are
the mussels. I tried the Basque
mussels and I was in for a treat.
Carrying white wine, Spanish
chorizo, red pepper, chili and
smoked paprika the mussels were
cooked to perfection and paired
well with bread ready to be dipped
into the mixture. The bistro has
my vote for the best mussels in
town.
If you are more of a carnivore,
it is important to try Onglet avec
Frites. With the hangar steak
cooked medium rare, you will
taste tenderness. The steak is
paired well with frites and mixed
vegetables adding savor to the
dish.
Once the tasting was finished,
Donnelly caved us into a chocolate
mousse, which was an unforgettable course. Dip your fork right into
mouth and you will taste a light
flavored chocolate with a softer
textured similar to ice cream.
I must say, La Frite will not
leave anybody disappointed,
whether you are a carnivore or are
looking to satisfy your sweet tooth.
“I think it’s a great aspect of
San Antonio. We were one of
the first restaurants in Southtown
to immerse in the food scene,”
concluded Donnelly. “For seven
years, it’s been amazing to see
all the growth – the culture and
restaurants expanding. I want to
further that as much as I can.”

Briscoe opens door to nation’s top Western artists

The Briscoe Art Museum
opens the doors for many to
enjoy a western experience one
could not help set their eyes
upon.
This season, Briscoe Western
Art Museum unveiled a stellar
exhibit that features 71 of the
country’s premiere Western artists at “Night of Artists Art Sale
& Exhibit,” taking place until
May 15. During that time, the
exhibition will be open during
regular museum hours and free
with museum admission. All
unsold art will be available for
purchase.
Candidates for this exhibit
include: Buckeye Blake, Mary
Ross Buchholz, local painter
Caroline Korbell Carrington,
Ragan Gennusa, Chris Hunt and
Canadian painter Terry Issac.
“I love revolving my work
around the West, especially the
Alpine and Marfa area. My family had a ranch in the area where
I grew up, and I fell in love with
the landscape, especially the
color,” Carrington, a successful
landscape painter in San Antonio,
told La Prensa. “To capture the
landscape, I take photographs
and do a lot of sketches and
pastels... It’s easy to create landscapes, and I interpret them into
what I want them to be, making
it my own.”
Nationally recognized painters who are also on the exhibit
include T.D. Kelsey, Cliff Calvin, Terri Kelly Moyers, Bill
Nebekerm Sandy Scott, Martin
Grelle, Billy Schneck, Kent
Ullberg and Kim Wiggins. The
range of subjects reflects on the
vastness of the great American
West from pensive landscapes
to frontier cowboys, historic
missions and detailed Native
American tableaus.
“The exhibition is a great way
to preserve, interpret and educate
people on history, American
art and culture of the American
West,” said Jessica Erin Elliot,
chair of board at the Briscoe
Museum. “With the incredible
culture that still exists in South
Texas ranches and art work that

of Artists Art Sale & Exhibit”
has drawn many art enthusiasts,
collectors and visitors to the museum to give them opportunity to
view and purchase over 270 con-
temporary works of art, which
includes paintings, sculptures
and mixed media.
Audiences continue to come
back to this event because it
highlights a form of lifestyle
found all over Texas, yet not in
the spotlight.
For Elliot, this was a way for
art to document a way of life that
many people believe is dying. It
is dedicated to the audiences of

El Dasa busca triunfar en Hollywood en miniserie “El Vato”

El Dasa ya conquista al público con sus canciones norteñas
y ahora se lanza a la televisión
de NBC Universo para contar
la historia de un joven cantante
camino a la fama en “El Vato”, a
partir del domingo 17 de abril a
las 9:00 p.m.
“La serie seguirá las aventuras
del cantante, ‘El Vato’ mientras se
abre paso en Los Ángeles tras conseguir un contrato de grabación
millonario difícil de rechazar. ‘El
Vato’ lo arriesga todo. Deja su
vida en México por los reflectores de Hollywood y un posible
estrellato en compañía de sus entrañables amigos. Pero, con tantas
tentaciones y obstáculos a cada
paso, ¿tendrá lo necesario para triunfar?”, adelanta NBC Universo,
cadena que ya ha tenido triunfos
en el mercado hispano gracias al
reality show de otro cantante de
música regional mexicana, Larry
Hernández con “Larrymania”.
Pero ahora es el turno del carismático y pelirrojo cantante de
música regional mexicana descubierto por Vicente Fernández en
2011.
Y con buen ánimo y sonrisas a
través del teléfono, El Dasa platicó
con La Prensa de San Antonio
sobre “El Vato”, un cantante ficticio de nombre Miguel Cisneros
Altamirano en la nueva serie.
El Dasa explicó que la historia
de “El Vato” es original, que se
escribió hace mucho tiempo y que
es un proyecto en el cual trabaja
desde año y medio.
“Mucha gente ha manejado que
la serie es de mi vida, por lo cual
siempre tengo que decir que no es
totalmente así, que sí hay mucho
tinte de mi vida, que agarraron
de mi historia eso es verdad…
pero yo no soy nadie para andar
contando mi historia, hasta pena
me daba… es una ficción con comedia, cosas de la realidad mías,
la gente se va a quedar con preguntas, entonces yo les invito a que la
vean, que se den el beneficio de la
duda de mi trabajo como actor”.
Y dado que lo suyo es la música,
pues El Dada no dudó en admitir
que actuar le fue difícil ya que
tenía nula preparación al respecto,
pero que investigando en Internet,
grabando sus líneas y escuchándose a sí mismo por las noches
para memorizar los diálogos le
ayudó muchísimo.
Pero “El Vato” en su aventura
de buscar la fama en Los Ángeles
no estará solo. Le acompañarán la
actriz Cristina Rodlo (Mariana),
Gustavo Egelhaaf (El Pollo),
Ricardo Polanco (Brandon), su
grupo de amigos que se embarcan
con él a la aventura de “triunfar en
Hollywood”.
“Ellos son parte esencial, sin
ellos no hay Vato, no hay Dasa
como actor. Créanme, si llegara a
hacer un buen papel y el público
dice ‘lo hizo bien’ es gracias a
ellos, que son actores reales”,
confiesa.
Y añade que uno de ellos hace
el rol de manager. “Es un vividor,
pero que anda por allí, es como
mi mano derecha”. Y “Mariana
es con ella con la que compongo
todas mis canciones, sin ella no
soy nadie”.
“El Vato” tendrá 10 capítulos,
entre drama y comedia sin querer, porque dice que el público
se reirá no por chistes, sino por
las situaciones que el grupo pasa,
“pero que nunca se rajan y siguen
adelante, es la historia de un grupo
de amigos”, dice el cantante.
Y qué si habrá escenas cachondas en su serie, como en
sus videos, comenta: “No una,
¡Muuuchas! El Vato, el personaje que hago yo, es un bohemio
enamorado, loco de amor y pícaro
y los invito a que lo vean”, ríe El
Dasa.
También adelante que todas las
canciones que aparecerán en “El
Vato” serán originales compuestas
para la serie. Y que el tema principal, de su autoría, llevará por
nombre “Me quito el sombrero”,
pero que todo ser irá dando a
conocer poco a poco en todas sus
plataformas.
El intérprete de “Alegre y enamorado”, “Por bonita”, “Mentirosa” y
“Casi perfecto” ha compartido escenario con algunos de los grupos
más conocidos del género regional
mexicano como Banda El Recodo,
La Arrolladora Banda El Limón,
El Coyote, entre otros.
Su primer disco “El Dasa Pa’ La
Raza” fue nominado al Grammy
Latino en la categoría de “Mejor
Álbum de Banda” y ganó el premio “Revelación del Año” dentro
del género Regional Mexicano en
Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música
Latina 2014.
Y ya que ha tenido éxito en la
música, se estrena en la televisión

The County Line’s ‘2016 Live Music
Series’ moves to Thursday nights
The popular “Ancira Chrysler
Jeep Dodge Ram 2016 Live Music
Series at The County Line” which
benefits the San Antonio Food Bank
is back—on a new night.
The very popular live music series
is moving from its 15-year Wednesday night perch to Thursday nights
from April 17 through Sept. 30 at
The County Line Bar-B-Q restaurant at 10101 IH-10 West (between
the Wurzbach and Huebner Road
exits, near the Colonnade).
Also new this year, full seating
and dining will be available on the
patio beginning each concert night at
6 p.m. through the end of the concert
at 9:30 p.m. Happy hour will run
inside and outside of the restaurant,
from 3 to 9:30 p.m. on concert days.
“Now in our 16th year, our faithful crowds have grown up with the
series,” said Mike Crenwelge, general manager of The County Line
on IH-10. “To better cater to their
demands, the series will be moved to
Thursday nights and offer full dining
on the patio.”
Held in the restaurant’s open-air
patio, the headliner goes on at 7:30
p.m. Concerts are held rain or shine.
Free parking is available at Hallmark

a la nueva sociedad, según lo expresó Nelson Santiago, presidente
de la Sociedad Cultural de Killeen
(TX), durante la ceremonia de
protesta que se realizó el primero
de abril en el Instituto Cultural
de México.
La ceremonia, fue conducida

Estrenarán película sobre
Hemingway filmada en Cuba

“Papa: Hemingway en Cuba”
se estrenará el próximo 29 de
abril y cuenta la historia de cómo
Ed Myers, un joven periodista
de The Miami Herald, le escribe
una carta a Ernest Hemingway
(su ídolo) y este le responde por
teléfono “Buena carta, chico”, ¿te
gusta pescar?
Con esta respuesta el famoso
escritor invita a Myers a visitarlo
en La Habana, donde ambos entablan una relación casi de padre
e hijo con el trasfondo de la Revolución Cubana en 1959.
Esta película, dirigida por Bob
Yari no solo cuenta una historia real, sino que también fue
filmada en parte en La Habana,
Cuba, siendo la primera película
americana en filmarse en la isla
desde que inició el embargo estadounidense.
El guion autobiográfico fue
escrito por Denne Bart Petitclerc
(periodista y novelista fallecido
en 2016) quien fue el verdadero
Ed Mayers, el joven periodista
que le escribió a Hemingway y
se volvió su amigo.
El actor americano Giovanni
Ribisi interpreta al joven periodista Ed Myers, Adrian Sparks
encarna a Ernest Hemingway,
Joely Richardson es su esposa,
Mary Hemingway.
Minka Kelly es Debbi Hunt,
James Remar es Santo Trafficante
Jr (el más poderoso mafiosos en
la era de Batista en Cuba) y el actor cubano Eduardo Almirante es
Gregorio Fuentes, el compañero
de Hemingway de El Pilar.
Los productores son Amanda

fue filmada en cooperación con el
Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC).
“Cuba era ideal y la única locación para hacer esta película.
Después de todo no hay mejor
lugar para filmar una historia de
la vida de Hemingway como su
casa. Filmamos completamente
en lugares reales, tanto exteriores
como interiores”, dice el director.
“No usamos ningún estudio ni
locaciones construidas”, agrega.
Y dado que La Habana es
una ciudad casi congelada en el
tiempo debido al embargo, el
ambiente es de los años 50’s, pues
los autos que recorren sus calles
son de esa época.
Escenas de la película fueron
filmadas en lugares reales como
el Hotel Dos Mundos, donde
Hemingway vivió por un tiempo,
La Floridita, los exteriores del
Palacio Presidencial, la villa Cojimar (desde donde el autor salía
a pescar) y, por supuesto, en la
Finca Vigía (diez millas al este de
La Habana), la cual fue la última
casa del escritor y la que el gobierno cubano la conserva como un
tesoro y tal cual él la dejó.
La cinta transmitirá los sonidos y las vistas actuales de La
Habana.
Ernest Hemingway es un indudable puente entre la cultura
cubana y estadounidense. El
autor de “Por quién doblan las
campanas”, “El viejo y el mar” y
“Muerte en la tarde”, entre otras
novelas, vivió en la isla entre
1939 y 1960.

Carrie Underwood, is bringing
“The Storyteller Tour – Stories in
the Round” to Texas making a stop
in San Antonio and Houston.
One of country’s top female selling artists, Underwood will perform
on Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m.at the
AT&T Center The tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com or
attcenter.com and range between
$46 and $76. The Houston show
will be on Tuesday, April 19 at 7
p.m. at the Toyota Center.

Judge rejects Porsche’s responsibility
in actor Paul Walker’s death
EFE - A federal judge in Los
Angeles ruled that automaker
Porsche was not responsible for
the November 2013 car crash
that ended the lives of actor Paul
Walker and friend Roger Rodas,
the TMZ celebrity news website
reported Tuesday.
District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez thus resolved the lawsuit filed in May 2014 against
Porsche by the widow of Walker’s friend, who was driving the
car in which the two men died
while street racing.
Kristine Rodas, the widow
of Roger Rodas, said there had
been manufacturing and safety
defects in the Porsche Carrera
GT, but that argument was rejected by the judge as the cause
of the crash that led to the men’s
deaths.
The plaintiff argued that the
passenger compartment was
not sufficiently strong and that
the vehicle was not designed
to protect its occupants from a
side impact, and there were also
defects in the gas tank and the
vehicle’s suspension.
The judge rejected all those
claims saying that there was no
evidence to support them.
In her complaint, the plaintiff
said that the vehicle in which
her husband and the film star
were riding was traveling at 88
kilometers (55 miles) per hour
at the time of the crash, while
the police report on the accident
said that it was traveling at be-
tween 128 kph and 150 kph (79
mph to 93 mph).
The Carrera GT, authorities
said, was traveling at more than
twice the legal speed limit and
burst into flames after hitting a
public light pole and a tree.
Walker, who achieved fame
for his key role in the “Fast &
Furious” action racing films,
died on June 30, 2013, at age
40 from “trauma and burns,”
according to the autopsy report
published by the Los Angeles
Coroner’s Office.
The actor’s daughter, Meadow Walker, also filed a lawsuit
against Porsche in September
2015 contending that design
defects caused the crash. That
suit is still pending.

Wednesday, on his 79th birthday, at his home in California.
Haggard recently had been
suffering from pneumonia, an
illness that had forced him to
cancel several concerts over the
past few months.
Born April 6, 1937, in Bakersfield, California, Haggard
grew up in a family who fled
the Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the Depression.
He first came in contact with
country music when he was a
teenager, a period during which
he began having frequent problems with the law that, later,
resulted in his serving several
years in San Quentin prison.

His musical career began in
the 1960s when, after comprising part of the Wynn Stewart
band, he came out with “Strangers” in 1965, his first solo
album and the first in a long,
fertile and successful lifetime
run of more than 70 albums.
Haggard was a pioneer of
what became known as the
“Bakersfield sound,” a current within country music that
emerged in response to the
more polished style associated
with Nashville and which had
a sharper focus with greater
importance attached to electric
instrumentation.
He was also greatly admired
for his poetic ability to tell
about the lives of the working
class in his songs.
According to his profile in the
Country Music Hall of Fame,
into which he was inducted in
1994, Haggard recorded more
than 600 songs in his career,
of which 250 were written by
himself alone, and he achieved
30 No. 1 hits.
Among his most popular
numbers are “Okie From Muskogee,” “Today I Started Loving
You Again,” “Mama Tried” and
“Workin’ Man Blues.”
Haggard, in addition, broadened his country style by combining it with jazz, swing, blues
and folk.
His last album, “Django and
Jimmie,” was released in 2015
with Willie Nelson.
