PASTOR’S MESSAGE 3 Pope Francis’ homily: What exactly is our Christian identity? Pope F rancis asked at the start of his homily, inviting his listeners to think of it as “a long journey” from ambiguity to a strong faith that we can bear witness to in our daily lives. It is true that we are sinners, he said, and that we fall down, but with God’s strength we can get up again and continue our journey. “Sin is part of our identity”, he stressed, but we are sinners with faith in God “who has anointed us, put his seal upon us” and given us the Holy Spirit as a pledge in our hearts. Christians, the Pope said, are not people who follow a particular philosophy, but rather those who remain faithful to this God-given identity as the anointed ones who let the Spirit into their hearts. The beauty of this identity, he said, can be seen through the way we bear witness to the world. But he warned of several ways in which this witness can be weakened or watered down: firstly by moving from our concrete faith in Christ to a kind of insipid religion of just prayers and ideas, along the lines of the Gnostics in the ancient world. These “modern Gnostics”, Pope Francis said, are tempted to avoid the scandal of the Cross and are content to seek God through their “rather ethereal Christian spirituality”. Secondly, the Pope went on, there are those who forget they have been anointed and given the guarantee of the Spirit, so they are always searching for some “novelty” in their Christian identity. They say “Where are the visionaries who can tell us exactly what message Our Lady will be sending at 4’o’clock this afternoon?”, he joked. Finally, the Pope warned, there are those whose identity is weakened by moral and human “worldliness” and the desire to broaden the boundaries of their Christian conscience. They are like salt that loses its flavour, he said, yet throughout the history of Salvation, God has patiently led us from ambiguity to the concrete certainties of the Incarnation and of our Redemption through the death of His Son. “This is our identity”, the Pope said, and we must ask the Lord for the gift of grace to bear witness to this truth. (Vatican Radio) Summer Oratorio: I renew the invitation to the families of the parish to bring your children and encourage your teenager to attend the summer oratorio conducted by Sisters Servants of the Lord and two IVE brothers. It will be a week full of joy and encounter with Jesus. For more info, please check the faith formation page. Father Mariano Varela, IVE Mankato’s Reboot! Live! The old wall has been deteriorating at an accelerated rate the last couple of years. This project will take about 3 weeks. Schwab Washing from Eagle Lake will be cleaning and sealing the outside columns on the church in the next couple of weeks to keep the water from eroding the columns. These projects are being paid for out of our savings account that is funded from generous bequests and part of the rental income from Kato Public Charter School. Helping Hands If you would like to help serve the funeral lunches for the month of June please call Vickie Busch at 387-4753 or JoAnn Hensel at 388-7510. Thank you. Saint Paul Street Evangelization Luke Westman is looking to start a Saint Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE) team for the Mankato area. The purpose of this team is to take the gospel to the streets. Luke has already registered and has access to the available training material. Now, the only thing missing is other passionate teammates that would like to join in this exciting project. If you are interested, please contact him at his email – [email protected] Religious Vocations A MISCONCEPTION AMONG some Catholics is that the priest has an ideal job: he works one day each week, Sunday. They forget that the other six days a week, the priest works long and hard behind the scenes: bringing communion to the sick and elderly, counseling troubled families, visiting school classes, preparing individuals for sacraments. Often the job is frustrating, exhausting and thankless, but always of vital importance. Take some time this week and express appreciation to your priests for the difficult work they do. Presented by The Mankato Serra Club for priestly and religious vocations for more information call 507.696.8119. Noontime Organ Recital Series This week. June 16, Nathan and Lisa Knutson will be performing for the Summer Noontime Organ recital series, presented by the Sioux Trails Chapter of the American Guild of Organists at 12:10, at Christ the King Lutheran Church at 22 Pfau St . (Colossians 3: 23-14) Sick Call Visiting If you know of any parishioner of SSPP who is sick in the hospital or nursing home, that need to be anointed or receive the sacrament of confession, or see the priest, please do not hesitate to call the parish office at 3882995. Pro Life Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” ~Matthew 19:14 Rosary Society Rosaries prayed for the weekend of June 13-14, for those who doubt the value of their lives, Sundays: 7:05 & 9:05 in the main Church & Wednesdays, 3:30 pm in Xavier Hall Chapel.
