Federico August 21, 2016 READINGS FOR THE WEEK Some of Jesus’ sayings, unless they are read from their true perspective, may lead us to deform the gospel. Such is the case with the well-known words of the following passage: “Strive to enter through the narrow door.” If not interpreted properly, they can lead us towards a narrow rigorism, rigid and contrary to the gospel, instead of leading us to the real radicality demanded by Jesus. The door to the kingdom is narrow and it makes us face our own conscience, without the aid of any institutional, religious or magical apparatus that would offer us salvation as if it were something to be bought at the store. It is not that entering the kingdom is easy for some and difficult for others; it is as easy or as difficult as life itself, with its recurring doubts, options, clashes and crises, joys and happiness. It might seem simple to give alms, but we must be careful not to empty this gesture of its importance. Indeed, the term “alms”, derives from the Greek and actually means “mercy”. Therefore, almsgiving must carry with it all the richness of mercy. And as mercy has a thousand paths, a thousand ways, thus almsgiving is expressed in many ways, in order to alleviate the hardship of those who are in need. The duty to give alms is as ancient as the Bible…God demands special attention for the poor, who at times are destitute, strangers, orphans and widows…[b] ecause God wants his people to watch over these brothers and sisters of ours; moreover, I would say that they are at the very centre of the message: to praise God through sacrifice and to praise God through almsgiving. We stand during Mass as a sign of respect and honor. Standing is the posture for the celebrant’s entrance and exit, during the proclamation of the Gospel and for the Creed. By standing we assume our full stature in Christ not in pride, but in humble gratitude for the marvelous things God has done for us. ¿SABÍA USTED…? COLLECTION LAST WEEK Colecta de la semana pasada $16.588.50 SECOND COLLECTION Segunda colecta Amor en Acción $7,097.00 A REMINDER TO ALL Those receiving Holy Communion must fast from food and drink for one hour before receiving (not one hour before Mass). Water and medicine may be taken.
