Tips For Parents In Riverside County, 40% of children ages 2 -11 drink one or more sugar sweetened beverages every day. At the same time, childhood obesity is at its all time high and research shows that there is a direct link between drinking sugar sweetened beverages and being overweight. What are Sugar Sweetened Beverages? Soda, juice, sports drinks, energy drinks, coffee and tea beverages, sweetened milks and milk alternatives, can all include added sugar. Did you know? • An average preschooler consumes 65 pounds of added sugar each year. • When a 40-pound child drinks one can of soda, the child is getting as much caffeine as a 150-pound adult drinking two cups of coffee. • Fruit juice has a high concentration of sugar and calories and doesn’t have the same benefits of fresh fruit.
