COMMON CORE PARENT UPDATE
Grades 6-8

Common Core State Standards
California will begin implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English
Language Arts and Mathematics in the 2014-15 school year. These rigorous standards will ensure
that students are equipped with the skills necessary for college and careers by requiring students
to demonstrate their understanding of concepts through high level thinking and problem solving
skills. Paramount Unified School District is preparing students for the new standards.
English Language Arts
The CCSS for English Language Arts are divided into four strands: reading, writing, speaking and
listening, and language
• Reading: Read and understand a wide variety of complex nonfiction books and find evidence
to write a report, summary or analysis.
•
Writing: Write high quality reports, summaries or analyses that develop a central idea and
are supported with specific examples, facts and details.
•
Speaking and Listening: Thoughtfully consider different opinions before presenting an
argument that is logical and supported by evidence.
•
Language: Demonstrate command of English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Students will use technology to create written responses on the English Language Arts assessment.
Mathematics
The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics define what students should understand and
be able to do in mathematics. Here are sample problems for the Mathematics assessment for
grades 6-8:
• All books in a store are being discounted by 30%. Let x represent the regular price of any
book in the store. Write an expression used to find the sale price of any book in the store.
•
In the following equation, a and b are both integers. a(3x – 8) = b – 18x
What is the value of a? What is the value of b?
A restaurant worker used 5 loaves of wheat bread and 2 loaves of rye bread to make
sandwiches for an event.
o Write a ratio that compares the number of loaves of rye bread to the number of
loaves of wheat bread.
o Describe what the ratio 7:2 means in terms of the loaves of bread for the event.
The assessments for mathematics challenge students to apply their knowledge and skills to real
world problems based on the mathematics standards.

Estándares Estatales Comunes
California empezará la implementación de los Estándares Estatales Comunes (CCSS) para las Artes del
Lenguaje y Matemáticas durante el año escolar 2014-15. Estos estándares precisos causarán que los alumnos
estén equipados con las destrezas necesarias para la universidad y las profesiones requiriendo que los alumnos

resolver problemas. Paramount Unified School District está preparando a los estudiantes para los nuevos
estándares.
Artes del Lenguaje en Inglés
Los CCSS para las Artes del Lenguaje en Inglés están divididos en cuatro elementos : lectura, escritura,
comprensión auditiva y expresión oral y lenguaje.
• Lectura: Leer y entender una amplia variedad de libros complejos de no ficción y encontrar evidencia
para escribir un reporte, un resumen o un análisis.
•
Escritura: Escribir reportes, resúmenes o análisis de alta calidad que desarrollen una idea central y que
estén apoyados con ejemplos específicos, hechos y detalles.
•
Comprensión auditiva y expresión oral: Considerar atentamente diferentes opiniones antes de
presentar un argumento que es lógico y está apoyado por evidencia.
•
Lenguaje: Demonstrar dominio en la gramática y su uso en inglés cuando se hace una composición o al
hablar.
Los alumnos usarán la tecnología para escribir redacciones amplias en la evaluación de las Artes del Lenguaje..
Matemáticas
Los Estándares Estatales Comunes para Matemáticas definen lo que los alumnos en los grados del 6 al 8 deben
comprender y poder hacer en matemáticas. Aquí están algunos problemas de muestra de la evaluación de
Matemáticas para grados del 6 al 8:
• Todos los libros en una tienda están siendo descontados un 30%. Dejar que x represente el precio
regular de cualquier libro en la tienda. Escribir una expresión que se utilice para encontrar el precio
de venta de cualquier libro en la tienda.

o Describir lo que la proporción 7:2 significa en términos de las barras de pan para el evento.
Las evaluaciones para matemáticas retan a los estudiantes a que apliquen sus conocimientos y destrezas a
problemas globales reales basados en los estándares de matemáticas.
