Paraty House is one of Kogan’s favorite houses and it is made out
of two box-like structures, one placed on top of the other, with big
floor-to-ceiling windows that look out onto the beautiful beach it
is placed on. The house is actually located between two mountains
of an island between Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro and it can only
be accessed by boat. Surrounded by practically virgin nature, the
house has various terraces and a garden full of medicinal and
edible herbs. It is decorated with furniture and sculptures from
well-known Brazilian artists. The Paraty house was awarded the
Best of the Year in 2009 by Interior Design Magazine and the first
prize of the Leading European Architects Forum in Berlin (LEAF)

Premio Pritzker 2009 . The 2009 Pritzker Prize
Peter Zumthor es el arquitecto suizo que ganó el premio Priztker de

al margen de los medios y que vivamos los resultados de la buena
arquitectura en nuestra propia piel, haciendo de su trabajo toda una
experiencia sensorial.
En esta ocasión queremos mostrar el trabajo de Zumthor a través del
Therme Vals, un spa construido sobre aguas termales en Graubunden
Canton, Suiza. El edificio sustituye uno anterior, construido en 1960, y
la remodelación lo dejó completamente diferente a lo que fue.
Para construir el edificio se escavó dentro de la montaña y se le puso
un techo verde que lo integra perfectamente al medioambiente. La
rectitud de la forma externa contrasta humildemente con la vegetación.
Hay un equilibrio perfecto entre espacios interiores y exteriores, la luz
natural y la artificial, juegos de sombras y oscuridad… y la simplicidad
de las líneas y materiales utilizados le dan un aire de pureza, relajación
y respeto.
Peter Zumthor is the Swiss architect that was awarded the Priztker Prize
last year (2009). He is a reserved person who prefers to stay away from
the media, and that we live the results of good architecture for what it
is. Each one of his projects shows a complete sensorial experience.
This time we want to show Zumthor’s work through the Therme Vals,
a spa placed above thermal waters in the Graubunden Canton area of
Switzerland. There was a building there, built in 1960, but this one has
nothing to do with what it once was.
The building was constructed by excavating into the mountain and
placing a green roof over it, integrating the building perfectly into the
environment. The straight lines of its exterior walls contrast with the
lush vegetation that surrounds it, reminding us of the local quarries,
upon which Zumthor based his design. There’s a perfect balance
between interior and exterior spaces, natural and artificial lighting,
darkness and illumination, games of shadows that harmonize each
material used, and space created, with purity, simplicity and respect.
