The Ascension of the Lord
The Ascension of the Lord
Today we celebrate the Ascension of Jesus into heaven. This solemnity used to occur on Thursday, 40 days after
Easter, but since fewer and fewer people were attending the mid-week celebration, it was transferred to Sunday so that
more of the faithful would celebrate this important event.
Pope Francis stated in a homily at St. Peter’s Basilica on November 4, 2013 these words: “Our sins are in the hands
of God; those merciful hands, those hands “wounded” by love. It was not by chance that Jesus willed to preserve the
wounds in his hands to enable us to know and feel his mercy. And this is our strength, our hope.”
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells his disciples (and us): “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from
the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached….You are witnesses of these things.” As we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord we are commissioned as Jesus’ witnesses. We are witnesses that
wounds, suffering and death do not have the last word. Resurrection, forgiveness, mercy and new life do. The wounds
of Jesus remind us we can find meaning in our wounds and suffering. We can proclaim new life and resurrection when
we discover this truth. Our sins and wounds are in the hands of God, who is always ready to forgive, restore and impart
His Spirit upon us. May we who receive such wonderful gifts, be faithful witnesses to His name, sharing the gifts of
Fr. Tom
love, mercy and new life we have received. Blessings.
Mission Appeal – Each year, every parish in our Archdiocese has a Mission
Appeal. This weekend Fr. Vito Di Marzio from St. Elizabeth Church in Van
Nuys will speak at all the Masses on behalf of the Rogationist Fathers of the
Heart of Jesus. Your generosity and support of their work in the foreign missions is appreciated.

Ask Only One Question
We can only discern one path at a
time. It is hard enough to hear God
say yes to a single question, let
alone to hear His response to a
multiple-choice question. Focus on
and pray about one path at a
time. After asking the question, it
becomes time to listen for God’s
call.
