Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday, July 12, 2015
Dear Friends,
He was a zealous missionary. He spent a large amount of his time with people, listening to their grievances and
helping them to sort out their problems. One day he visited an orphanage and distributed food to the children.
When he approached a child, the child looked at him with great awe, and asked him, “Are you Jesus?” He had
heard about the story of Jesus feeding the hungry. When he saw the man with the bread, the little boy thought
that he would be Jesus.
The Gospel reading for this Sunday is on Evangelization. It is the story of Jesus sending out his disciples on a
Mission. Missionary work is an integral part of our Christian Faith. As St. John Paul II stated, “Faith is complete
when it is shared”. He introduced the term: New Evangelization.
What is our mission as disciples of Jesus? Jesus’ mission instructions clearly indicate what mission is all about. It
is all about invitation. It is inviting others to the banquet of Jesus’ unconditional love and mercy. Jesus said, "If
they don't accept you, shake the dust off your feet and leave." He didn't say to stand and argue with them. He
didn't say to condemn them to hell. It is inviting others to Jesus with humility and love. So Jesus said: Take
nothing with you: no bread, no bags and no money. We need to leave our baggage behind and simply invite
people to the banquet of Jesus. It is simply leading people to Jesus.
Evangelization becomes successful when our lives support what we preach. Evangelization is a life of witness. We
witness by how our life is being changed by the power of Jesus. Does our life reflect what we believe? Show our
identity through our behavior. As someone wrote ‘You may be the only gospel some people will ever read; they
may never buy the Book. You write a new page of the gospel each day by the things that you do and by the words
that you say. People read what you write, whether faithful or true. What is the Gospel according to you?
May God bless you.

What is Evangelization?
The USCCB document “Go and Make Disciples: A National Plan and Strategy for
Catholic Evangelization in the United States” provides an excellent definition of
Catholic evangelization. Rephrasing some words of Pope Paul VI in Evangelii
Nuntiandi, this document states: Evangelizing means bringing the Good News of Jesus into every
human situation and seeking to convert individuals and society by the divine power of the Gospel
itself. At its essence are the proclamation of salvation in Jesus Christ and the response of a person
in faith, which are both works of the Spirit of God.
Evangelization must always be directly connected to the Lord Jesus Christ….There is no true
evangelization if the name, the teaching, the life, the promises, the Kingdom and the mystery of
Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God, are not proclaimed.”(#10-11)
Evangelization is not a program. It is a process of formation leading to transformation. It is to bring
people into a relationship with Jesus. Evangelization is a continuous process consisting of three
progressive steps.
Evangelization begins with a personal encounter with Jesus. (Jesus said to Andrew: Come and SeeJohn1:39). 2. Personal experience compels one to follow Him as a disciple. (The blind man followed
Jesus on the Way-Luke 18:43). 3. One who has experienced a newness of life in Jesus joyfully share
that experience with others. (The Samaritan woman ran to the city to invite people to JesusJohn 4:39).

Help Stop Physician Assisted Suicide
Your help is needed now to stop a dangerous bill from
becoming law.
Sacramento: State Senate Bill SB 128, End of Life,
proposes to legalize physician assisted suicide in
California. The bill is being deliberated in the state
Assembly. Letters, calls and petitions urging your state
Assembly Member to OPPOSE SB 128 are needed now!
Please contact Patrick O’Donnell and urge him to vote
NO on SB 128. Tell him this bill would cause doctors to
become killers and could be used to ration medical
treatment. There is no real safeguard against coercion
to use physician assisted suicide. Physician assisted
suicide has a history of degenerating into mercy killing
and genocide.

Safeguard The Children
Did You Know?
Summertime safety is key for children and parents
All teachers, staff and volunteers in the Archdiocese who
work with children must undergo fingerprinting and
criminal background checks. Last year alone, the Office
of Safeguard the Children trained 30,514 adults and
166,850 children in the VIRTUS® Child Sexual Abuse
Prevention Programs. If your child is participating in
summer activities outside of the Archdiocese, make sure
you know if the organization or camp preforms criminal
background andreference checks on their staff. Learn

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest
a while.“
—Mark 6:31
huellas digitales.

Scripture Focus:
Jesus looks at the crowd with great feeling. They have
no one to feed them with the teaching that will give
them life or with the physical food to stay alive. Jesus
appreciates how vulnerable people are and how fragile
their lives are. Like sheep, they will die without a
shepherd to keep them together, showing them the
way and feeding them. Seeing their need, Jesus
himself begins to teach. He becomes shepherd to the
leaderless flock. Jesus calls his disciples to be the kind
of shepherd he is. The disciples, of course, will not
understand this kind of leadership until after the death
and resurrection of Jesus.

Reflection:
1. When have you felt let down or disappointed by
someone you looked to for leadership, guidance or
direction?
2. Where is the “out-of-the-way place” that gives you
peace? Why did you feel this way about this place?
3. When in your life have you felt like a sheep without
a shepherd, in need of spiritual and/or physical
care? Where or from whom did you seek care?
