Take a drive. Look at the places of worship in your
community. What do you see? How are they alike?
How are they unique? How are they different?
St. therese of lisieux
1873 - 1897
Memorial - October 1
Left motherless at four years old, she
followed her two older sisters into
the cloistered Carmelites, entering at
fifteen as Sister Thérèse of the Infant
Jesus. St. Thérése was unable to travel to the missions during her lifetime,
but prayed fervently for their success. In 1896, she contracted tuberculosis and after months of suffering, died at the age of twenty-four. Posthumous publication of her autobiography, “The
Story of a Soul,” prompted popular devotion. The “Little Flower” is remembered for her “little way” of seeking perfection in
the ordinary with a simple but total trust in God. She is the
patron of missions and missionaries. In 1997, St. John Paul II
declared her a Doctor of the Church.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 Blessed Virgin Mary
We offer our condolences to Oscar & Dora
Garza and family on the death of their
daughter Theresa Shields. May Theresa
and all the faithful departed rest in peace.
In 1972 Pope Paul VI revised several ministries and minor clerical orders. One ministry that was preserved was the ministry
of the instituted acolyte. While the term acolyte is at times used
when referring to young men and women who assist at the altar
(altar servers), the ministry of acolyte is a permanent institution. Because the ministry has its roots in the formation of ordained clergy, the ministry is reserved to men. The instituted
acolyte is appointed to assist the deacon
and serve the priest in the celebration of
the liturgy. He is an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion serving only
when sufficient ordinary ministers are
not available. Men must be at least 21
years of age, fully initiated and living an
exemplary Christian way of life, with no
impediments to sacramental reception,
(e.g. if married, one must be in valid marital union recognized
by the Church). For more information please contact Deacon
Ray in the parish office.

—-STEWARDSHIP
It has often been said that it is not the size
or nature of the gift which is important; it
is the attitude in which it is given. It is
what is in one’s heart that is important.
There are many quotes about this kind of
giving, including that wonderful line in the Prayer of
St. Francis, “It is in giving that we receive.” Jesus
makes reference to the importance of giving in today’s Gospel from St. Mark: “Anyone who gives
you a cup of water to drink because you belong to
Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his
reward.” Giving a cup of water may not seem significant to us, but to God, who sees into our very
hearts, it can be of great consequence. The keys
are that the gifts are given out of love, not pity or
guilt or because we may be blessed with excess.
And they are given in Jesus’ name. Giving, especially of self, is a sign of our commitment to being a
disciple of Jesus and as a sign that we truly “Love
our neighbor.” Giving in this way is at the nucleus
of stewardship. However, it can only be achieved if
we have undergone a conversion of heart which
leads us to understand that it is not how much we
give, but how much love we put into giving.
OUR GIFTS TO GOD
Thank you for your generous stewardship.
