Through Baptism, a person is welcomed into the company of Jesus and a member of the Body of Christ. The washing that takes place at Baptism cleanses us from sin and makes us a new creation, filled with grace and called to be a witness of the Resurrection of the Lord throughout our lives. Baptism literally gets us going on the road to eternal life. When we celebrate the BAPTISM OF THE LORD as we do today, it offers us the opportunity to take a new look at our own Baptism and what it means to us. Our Lord was “Baptized” in the Jordan by John. Jesus did not need Baptism; Our Lord had no sin to wash away; He had no need for conversion or a change of heart; He didn’t need to be made into a new creation – He is the new creation itself. The Preface for the Feast of John the Baptist says it well:“…He (John) baptized Christ, the giver of baptism, in waters made holy by the one who was baptized.” Jesus is the one who gave us baptism, not the other way around. But, Jesus chose to be baptized in order to give us an example: that through Baptism we are made new – we die to sin and rise to new life in Christ. This is a wonderful mystery and a tremendous gift for us. Sadly, some reject the need for Baptism as part of the commitment to Christian life. All one needs to do, they say, is to profess faith in the Name of Jesus and that’s good enough. Then why does Jesus make such an effort to be baptized? Why does He give us this example if not to expect it of us? Why does every Gospel refer in some way to the baptism of Jesus and of our oneness with Jesus through Baptism? Finally, Baptism calls us to live our lives as authentic witnesses of Christ. Baptism demands of us to be honest – this is one of the most serious criticisms against Christians: “You say you belong to Christ, but your actions and example are just the opposite.” If we share in the mystery of Christ’s life through Baptism, how can we live a life contrary to that call? This is the challenge; this is the responsibility! This is the joy. As we celebrate the BAPTISM OF THE LORD, let’s reflect about our own Baptism and what it means for us. Let’s pray that we take our Baptism seriously – not just talk about it or have an empty celebration. May we commit ourselves each day to live as authentic disciples of the Lord; as genuine friends of Jesus, ready to serve Him with our whole lives. No date may be set for a wedding, until the couple has met with the priest/Deacon. MARRIAGE VALIDATION Catholics are obliged to be married in the Church before a Catholic Ordained Minister (Deacon/Priest) and two witnesses. They may have their marriage validated (sometimes called blessed) in the Catholic Church! Please call the Parish Office at 734-9522, to make an appointment to see a priest. The marriage can be validated (blessed) in a simple, private ceremony in the Catholic Church (the six-month waiting period would usually not apply to marriage validations).
