FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
FIESTA DEL BAUTISMO DEL SEÑOR
This feast of the baptism of our Lord
brings to a conclusion the Christmas
season that we’ve been celebrating.
“Why would Jesus be baptized?" after
all, John was preaching a baptism of repentance, a baptism for the forgiveness
of sin. In fact, in Matthew's Gospel at
the account of the baptism, John himself
seems confused. Jesus arrived from Galilee and came to John at the Jordan to
be baptized by him, but John tried to
prevent him. He said, "How is it that you
come to me? I should be baptized by you." Jesus tells John, "Let
it be like that for now so that we may fulfill the right order." He
doesn't fully answer John, but he gives a hint because Jesus,
though he is Son of God, wants to follow what he calls the
right order. He wants to be fully identified with us, with humans, with those who are sinners, those who are marginalized, oppressed, pushed aside. In that crowd that came to
follow John and be baptized, there were people of every
class, every order, every nationality, everyone and Jesus
comes to be one with them, and therefore, with all of us.
Jesus' baptism serves as a model for our baptism. For Jesus,
baptism represents the beginning of his ministry. The greatest of gifts is ours in baptism: God's very own life and love, a
life to overcome the death which is our inheritance from
Adam's sin, a love to overpower and win us away from love
of self to love of. With baptism our new life of grace begins;
it is a fresh start and also the gateway to the rest of Christian
life. What we should be prepared for is that our journey of
faith, much like Jesus' journey, continues to unfold long after
our baptism as we try to discern what our baptism means in
our daily living. We who have received the grace of baptism
must endeavor always to live up to our baptismal promises
throughout our life.
Fr. Joseph Mathew Paradayil, SDB
MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT
MANIFESTANDO AL ESPÍRITU
The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the
Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s
feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an
“epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in
Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism.
The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures
for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from
Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account
of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the
“bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6).
