If you’ve ever wondered what’s near MARTA
stations, look no further than MARTA’s YouTube
channel for behind-the-scenes video tours.
The videos have been publishing on a regular
schedule since 2013 to help visitors navigate
the transit system. The goal is to cover all 38
stations and feature hosts from as many MARTA offices as possible. Current videos include
tours of Five Points, Peachtree Center, Midtown and Decatur, along with the “Safety Slide”
music video and a ride with respect promo
featuring comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Visit www.

Welcome New MARTA Operators
Whether it’s fine-tuning best practices in vehicle
operations or acquiring new skills to keep our
transit system safe, we’re always in a learning
mode at MARTA.
Bus and rail operations, the heartbeat of MARTA, have recently increased the number of operators in anticipation of increased services to
benefit our customers. In April, 21 bus operators successfully completed training to transition to rail operations and 12 new bus operators
were hired after two months of training.
“Our new bus operators are dedicated to providing safe, reliable transportation for our customers. We welcome you to the MARTA family
and thank you for keeping us moving,” notes
Lee Burner, Director of Bus Transportation.
“We are excited to welcome 40 Operators to our
rail operations this year, added Linda Lee, General Superintendent of Rail Transportation. “As
we ramp up service frequency, these frontline
employees will provide us with the bandwidth to
better serve our customers.”

A: Eating and drinking is only allowed inside and
around MARTA stations. Consuming food and
beverages on a MARTA bus or train is prohibited–it can get messy!

Fridays
Summer is here and with summer comes Atlanta
Dream basketball! The 2013 WNBA Eastern Conference Champions are back in action and ready
to make another run towards a championship.
This season the Dream boasts a roster that includes players of Native American, Liberian, Brazilian, French, Austrian and Caribbean descent. In
celebration of the diversity of both the team and
the great city in which they play, the Dream will
debut a “Heritage Friday” series recognizing four
of the cultures represented on the team.
During four Friday evening games, beginning May
30, 2014, the Dream will focus on a different culture by highlighting their traditions and incorporating their culture into each night’s game experience.
Tips for Celebrating
July Fourth on MARTA
Peachtree Road Race. Pied Piper Parade. Lenox
Square. Centennial Park. Atlanta Braves. No matter how you celebrate the Fourth of July, the city
offers plenty of fun and fireworks. Here are some
tips to make your MARTA trip easier.
Going to the Peachtree Road Race? Rail service
will begin at 5 a.m. Allow extra time for your trip,
as trains can get crowded. You can also purchase
your fare in advance to avoid lines at the fare machines. Exit at the Lenox or Buckhead MARTA
stations. The race ends near the Midtown MARTA
station. The Lindbergh Center station offers free
daily parking in between the start and end of the
race and is your best bet for a short commute.
For the celebrations at Lenox Square, you can exit
at either the Lenox or Buckhead MARTA stations.
Closest free MARTA parking is at the Lindbergh
Center, Lenox and Brookhaven MARTA stations. If
parking at Lindbergh Center, be sure to take your
parking ticket with you so you can validate it in
one of the yellow machines inside the station.
The fireworks show at Centennial Olympic Park
can be reached via the Dome station on the blue/
green line or the Peachtree Center MARTA station
on the red/gold line. With large crowds, it is best
to avoid transferring at the Five Points station,
instead using the station on the rail line of your
final destination. The nearest MARTA parking for
downtown is at West End, Oakland City, Vine City,
Ashby, Inman Park and Candler Park.
The family friendly Fourth of July firework show
and Pied Piper Parade in downtown Decatur is
easily reachable via the Decatur MARTA station on
the blue rail line. If you are traveling from Atlanta,
be sure to board an “Indian Creek” train. Nearby
MARTA parking can be found at the Avondale and
East Lake stations.
The three-time Eastern Conference Champion,
Atlanta Dream is in its seventh season in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The
Dream has qualified for the playoffs in each of the
past five seasons, including conference titles in
2013, 2011 and 2010.

and Pedestrian Bridges Open June 24
The Buckhead Station north concourse and pedestrian bridges over Ga. 400 is scheduled to open
on June 24. MARTA, in joint partnership with the
Buckhead Community Improvement District, Georgia Department of Transportation, State Road and
Toll Authority, Federal Transit Administration and
the City of Atlanta, have worked together to reconnect the east and west sides of the Buckhead
community. The bridges will also offer a convenient
entrance to the Buckhead MARTA station from
nearby apartment and condominium communities
and the Buckhead Station shopping center, which
includes Old Navy, DSW, Nordstrom Rack and T.J.
Maxx. It is estimated that the new bridge will provide more than 3,000 people who live, work, shop
and worship in the area with a more practical rail
transit alternative.

COMBINED BUS AND RAIL SERVICE FOR THIRTY-FIVE
MARTA in history
By June 1996, MARTA had completed more
than 20 major projects including the north line,
the Perry Boulevard Compressed Natural Gas
bus facility, RideStores and automatic train announcements. The new north (red) line included the Buckhead, Medical Center and Dunwoody stations, and represented the first time
in MARTA’s history that a line segment spanned
all three funding jurisdictions (City of Atlanta,
Fulton County and DeKalb County).
MARTA Receives Gold
Standard for Safety
You can never be too prepared when providing a service to the public. MARTA held its first
Community Emergency Response Team training
from January 7, 2014 through March 25, 2014.
Led by Officer Anthony McCalla, 25 MARTA
employees from throughout the Authority participated in the nine-week training program
administered through the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA). Participants
learned disaster preparedness for hazards that
could impact the Atlanta metropolitan area and
our transit system. CERT members also learned
about fire safety, light search and rescue, team
organization and disaster medical operations.
In addition, MARTA’s regular security audits from
local, state and federal agencies have resulted
in a “Gold Standard” rating, awarded by TSA
Administrator, John Pistole, for the agency’s
Baseline Assessments for Security Enhancement. The security measures involve more than
just preventing and managing fare evasion and
problem riders–terrorism and dealing with gunmen have also been part of their regular training.
The 1,200 surveillance cameras in the system
have had a positive impact of not only reducing
bus driver assaults but also aiding the Atlanta
police with monitoring street crime throughout
the city. Cameras will be added to rail cars in
the near future, and MARTA is currently in the
process of building a new Integrated Operations
Center and Emergency Operations Center to
help keep passengers safe on their commute.

nuestros clientes. En abril, 21 conductores de
autobuses completaron con éxito su capacitación
para convertirse en conductores de trenes; además,
contratamos 12 nuevos conductores de autobuses,
una vez que hubieron completado dos meses de
capacitación. «Nuestros nuevos conductores de autobuses
se dedican a proporcionar un transporte seguro
y confiable a nuestros clientes. Les damos la
bienvenida a la familia de MARTA y les damos las
gracias por ayudarnos a seguir adelante», dice Lee
Burner, director del Departamento de Transporte en
Autobuses.
«Es un gusto dar la bienvenida a 40 conductores
en nuestro equipo de transporte en tren este año»,

Llegó el verano ¡y con él viene el baloncesto del Atlanta
Dream! Las campeonas de 2013 de la Conferencia
Este de la WNBA vuelven a la acción y están listas para
buscar otro campeonato. Esta temporada el Dream
cuenta con una alienación que incluye jugadoras de
ascendencia indígena estadounidense, liberiana,
brasileña, francesa, austriaca y caribeña. Para celebrar
tanto la diversidad del equipo como la de la gran
ciudad en la que juegan, el Dream comenzará una
serie llamada «Heritage Friday» (viernes de la herencia)
donde mostrarán su aprecio por cuatro de las culturas
representadas en el equipo. En cada uno de los juegos de las noches de cuatro
viernes, a partir del 30 de mayo de 2014, el Dream
se enfocará en una cultura diferente, dando destaque
a sus tradiciones e incorporando elementos de esa
cultura en el juego de cada noche.
Consejos para celebrar el
4 de julio usando MARTA
La carrera de Peachtree Road. El desfile del Flautista
de Hamelín. Lenox Square. Centennial Park. Los Atlanta
Braves. No importa cómo vaya a celebrar el 4 de julio, la
ciudad tiene mucha diversión y fuegos pirotécnicos para
ofrecerle. Estos son algunos consejos para que su viaje
en MARTA sea más sencillo.
¿Se dirige a la carrera de Peachtree Road? Los trenes
comenzarán a funcionar a las 5 a.m. Llegue con algo
de antecedencia, pues los trenes podrían estar llenos.
También puede comprar sus pasajes con antecedencia
para evitar las filas en las máquinas expendedoras. Bájese
en las estaciones Lenox o Buckhead de MARTA. La
carrera finaliza cerca de la estación Midtown de MARTA.
La estación Lindbergh Center ofrece estacionamiento

Points. Es mejor bajarse en una estación de la línea que
esté usando. Los estacionamientos de MARTA más

MARTA ha trabajado en sociedad conjunta con el

del Transporte Público y la ciudad de Atlanta para
reconectar los lados este y oeste de la comunidad de
Buckhead. Los puentes también proporcionarán un

MARTA en la Historia
En junio de 1996, MARTA había terminado más
de 20 proyectos importantes, incluyendo la línea
norte, la estación de autobuses movidos a gas
natural comprimido en Perry Boulevard, las tiendas
RideStore y los anuncios automáticos en los trenes.
La nueva línea norte (la roja) incluía las estaciones
Buckhead, Medical Center y Dunwoody, y
representaba la primera vez en la historia de MARTA
que un segmento de una línea atravesaba las tres
jurisdicciones financiadoras (la ciudad de Atlanta, el
condado de Fulton y el condado de DeKalb).
MARTA recibe la clasificación de
«modelo de excelencia» por su seguridad
Ningún nivel de preparación está demás cuando se
proporciona un servicio público. MARTA realizó el
primer entrenamiento para su equipo comunitario de
respuesta a las emergencias desde el 7 de enero hasta
el 25 de marzo de 2014. Bajo la conducción del oficial Anthony McCalla, 25
empleados de todas las áreas de MARTA participaron
en el programa de entrenamiento de nueve semanas
administrado por la FEMA (Agencia Federal para
el Manejo de Emergencias). Los participantes
recibieron capacitación en la preparación para
los desastres que pudieran afectar el área
metropolitana de Atlanta y nuestro sistema de
tránsito. Los miembros del equipo comunitario de
respuesta a las emergencias (CERT, por sus siglas
en inglés) también aprendieron procedimientos de
seguridad contra incendios, de búsqueda y rescate
de nivel liviano, de organización de equipos y de
atención médica en caso de desastres.
Además, como consecuencia de las auditorías de
seguridad que realizan regularmente las agencias locales,
estatales y federales en MARTA, el administrador de la
TSA (Administración para Seguridad del Transporte),
John Pistole, nos ha concedido la clasificación «Gold
Standard» (modelo de excelencia) debido a la evaluación
de referencia de la mejoría en la seguridad realizada por
esa agencia. Las medidas de seguridad no se limitan a la
prevención y el manejo de la evasión del pago del pasaje
y de los pasajeros problemáticos; el entrenamiento
regular también incluye medidas para enfrentar casos de
terrorismo y a personas con armas de fuego.
Las 1,200 cámaras de vigilancia en el sistema han
tenido un impacto positivo; no solo han reducido
los ataques a los conductores de autobuses sino
que también han ayudado a la policía de Atlanta a
monitorizar la delincuencia callejera en toda la ciudad.
Próximamente instalaremos cámaras en los trenes;
además, MARTA está actualmente en el proceso de
construir un nuevo centro de operaciones integradas y
un centro de operaciones de emergencia para ayudar
a mantener a los pasajeros seguros durante sus viajes.
