Fifth Sunday in Lent
Choose Mercy and Love
Today’s gospel is the story of the woman caught in adultery. Jesus spoke often
of the love and mercy of God, but his words would mean nothing unless he can forgive the person in front of him who needs forgiveness (the woman caught in adultery). Threatened with excommunication from his own religion, Jesus chooses love
and mercy over the law and worldly expectations.
In the first reading the prophet Isaiah proclaims the greatness of God and
shows the love God has for his people. Not only did God lead the people from slavery
to freedom, he will also make deserts become like gardens where everyone will eat
and drink. Jesus makes our desert journey of Lent come alive through his resurrection and through offering us mercy and love.
As followers of Jesus we must begin to make his choices our choices and his way our way. This begins when we
practice what Jesus taught. The world does not extend mercy very easily and tends toward an eye for an eye attitude. Jesus came to change that attitude and lead us toward mercy and compassion.
This jubilee year our Holy Father Pope Francis has called upon each of us to be “missionaries of mercy.” Please,
walk out into the desert-scape where the new church is to be built. Walk through the “Gates of Mercy” toward the
cross of Jesus and pray that you can be a “living sacrifice to God” (Romans 12:1) and an instrument of His mercy. Peace.
Fr. Tom
Penance Services– Lenten Penance Services will be held at on Wednesday, March 16 at St. Serra Parish, on
Tuesday, March 22 at Sacred Heart and Wednesday, March 23 at St. Mary’s. All services will begin at 7pm.
Easter Flowers- You are invited to donate potted Easter flowers in honor of friends or family members, living or
deceased. These flowers will be used to decorate our Church at Easter. Please bring them to the Church on Holy
Thursday, Good Friday or Holy Saturday. Your intentions will be remembered at all the Easter Masses.
Elegir La Misericordia y El Amor
Caminemos a

Palm Sunday
Year of Mercy
On Palm Sunday, Sacred Heart
Parish will be celebrating the Jubilee Year of Mercy in a special
way. We will be collecting prayer intentions from you to be included in our services during Holy Week, distributing Mercy Prayer Cards, offering opportunities for participating in corporal works of mercy,
providing a children’s corner which includes free rosaries and prayer cards, free refreshments, and an opportunity for fellowship. This will take place at the end of each Mass on
Palm Sunday at the red Doors Of Mercy. As you walk out you will see banners depicting
the 7 Corporal Works of Mercy and the 7 Spiritual Works of Mercy that we should all be
involved in. We are looking forward to constructing a culture of Mercy together as a parish!
This will also be an excellent opportunity to look back on the 125 years of our history at
Sacred Heart Church, which will include pictures and video for you to enjoy.

The Light is on for You
Welcome! Our doors are open and the light is on. Lent is the season where we prepare ourselves to renew and restore our
relationship with Jesus and the Church as we prepare to celebrate Easter. For many of us the Sacrament of Confession can be scary
and even embarrassing. We may be too nervous or consider ourselves unforgiveable. Yet with confidence Pope Francis reminds us:
“How many times in my pastoral ministry have I heard it said, ‘Father, I have many sins,’ & I have always pleaded, ‘Don’t be afraid; go to him; he is waiting
for you; he will take care of everything.’ We hear many offers from the world around us, but let us take up God’s offer instead: his is a caress of love.” –Pope
Francis
Want to make things right? Now is the time. There will be Lenten Penance Services on Wednesday, March 16 at St. Serra Parish, on Tuesday, March 22 at Sacred Heart and Wednesday, March 23 at St. Mary’s. All services will begin at 7pm. Sacred Heart
Church also has Confessions Mon-Fri from 6:30-6:50am and 5:00-5:20pm, and on Saturday from 4-5pm and at 8pm.
Going to Confession: Reconciliation may be face-to-face or anonymous, with a screen between you and the priest. Choose the
option that is the most comfortable for you.
1. The priest gives a blessing or greeting.
2. Make the Sign of the Cross and say, “Bless me father, for I have sinned. My last confession was…” (give weeks, months, or years).
3. Confess all your sins to the priest. (If you are unsure or uneasy, tell him and ask for help.)
4. The priest gives a penance and offers advice to help you become a better Catholic Christian.
5. Say an Act of Contrition, expressing your sorrow for your sins.
6. The priest, acting in the person of Christ, then absolves you from your sins.
Act of Contrition God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and
the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve
with the help of your grace to confess my sins, do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
