Whether you feel like you are at the mountain top experience of transfiguraon or one of grave tempta on, the Lord is with you and understands your plight. During our Lenten journey we have survived another wonderful Strawberry Fes val. Our Ash Wednesday celebra on over a week ago now brought many to our church home with an awareness of a need for God’s forgiveness. Our Lenten Penance Service is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13th (which just happens to be my mother’s 82nd birthday) but our neighbor to the south, Na vity Parish in Brandon is offering a Lenten Penance Service this Monday evening at 7pm. Addi onally, every parish in the Diocese will be par cipa ng in the light is on for you campaign opening our doors to hear confessions from 5pm ll 8pm on Thursday March 31st. St. Francis Parish in Seffner has scheduled their Lenten Penance Service for April 7th. When we get the informa on about the Lenten Penance Services in the Lakeland Parishes you can be sure that we will publicize that informa on in this bulle n. A er helping out with confessions at Na vity on Monday evening this week, I will be going to the Bethany Center for a con nuing educa on program for pastors en tled Good Leaders, Good Shepherds. As most of us pastors were trained in areas of Theology, Sacred Scripture, Cannon Law and the like very few of us received management training in seminary forma on. This program is a two year program that has been specifically designed for priests ac ve in pastoral ministry. The first module will be this week from Tuesday thru Friday. In May there will be a three day session followed by a day in June, July, and August; thus comple ng the second module. This two year course includes six modules and will take me out of the office during the week at mes but never away from the parish on the weekends. In the end, it will be a benefit to the parish as well as a challenge for me personally. Please pray that I can adjust to being a good student a er a long me away from the classroom. Soon I will be ready to announce the topic for this year’s Parish Lenten Mission. Please mark on your calendar the week before Holy Week. The Mission nights will be on Monday and Tuesday April 11th & 12th concluding with our Lenten Penance Service on Wednesday April 13th. No others groups should be scheduling their gatherings during these nights of mission. Peace in Christ, Fr. Tom J. Anastasia “Come Taste the Flavor of Fun” New Parishioners.. If you are a member of any of these ministries and have a ques on, please contact your ministry leader. DATE MINISTRY March 25 Mul cultural Ministry April 1 Knights of Columbus / CCW April 8 Pastoral Care & Bible Study April 15 Faith Forma on CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves everything behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These ques ons are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. PARISH NURSING 2011 ANNUAL PASTORAL APPEAL HOW DO YOU OBSERVE THE SEASON OF LENT? “You Make a Difference” Is it a season you are familiar with, do you have classic tradi ons, struggle with those smallest of sacrifices? Does celebra ng Lent seem more of a chore than an opportunity? Parish nursing want to “season”, the season of Lent. Over the next 8 weeks you will see opportunity to read scripture and get informa on on new and different ea ng. Rarely do we as Catholic Chris ans change our ea ng habits or fast regularly because of religious reasons… Lent once a year? We as a culture never really see the affects of poor ea ng and how it affects our spiritual health and well being. Lent is the perfect me to put into prac ce be er habits, simplici es and spiritual growth. So here we go on the “seasoning of Lent” WEEK 1 - AN INVITATION! READING: Deuteronomy 11: 18-22 We have a bodily home, treat it well, answer “YES” to the invita on and journey over the next 8 weeks …write God’s words on your hearts and hands, inside and outside, our human bodies… “Take up” and “Give up” on your pracces of ea ng.. create healthy, tasty NEW foods! Enjoy God’s abundant crea ons. Hopefully these prac ces will stay with you long a er the joy of Easter Sunday! WEEK 2 The Whole garden READING: Genesis 2:15-17, 3:1-7 Tempta on…. we all have it… how about those sweets? Chocolate bars? Burger and fries? WE all experience wan ng what we see… think of God’s abundant garden… all those fruits and vegetables that He has given to us… how many have you tried? We tend to judge what we have not tasted, many look weird or just like they would not taste good. Learn the lesson of the Garden of Eden. We are always en ced by food at hand; quick and easy…fast food is King! During your weeks of Lent make every opportunity to “take up”, eat foods that you won’t normally try… eggplant, kiwi, squashes, peppers for example… try to remember the whole garden next me at the grocery store… RECIPE FOR WEEK 1 AND 2 : Len l, Barley and Spinach Soup Ingredients: 3 tablespoons olive oil 4 cups fat free chicken broth 1 cup chopped onion 4 cups water 3 cloves garlic minced ¾ cup dried len ls 2 carrots diced ¼ cup pearl barley or reg. barley 2 celery stalks, diced 10 oz. fresh spinach 8 ounces tomato sauce 1 teaspoon dried thyme * salt/pepper to taste only if you can! Direc ons: In a large pot, cook olive oil onions and garlic for 3 minutes, add carrots, celery and cook another 2 minutes, add tomato sauce, s r and cook another minute, add the rest of the ingredients bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer 1 hour and 15 minutes. If you have already made your gi or pledge to this year’s Annual Pastoral Appeal – Thank you! You and many other faithful, generous donors have joined together on behalf of the 81 parishes and missions in our Diocese in joyful stewardship of treasure! Your generosity supports the many ministries, programs and services that assist thousands of our sisters and brothers in need throughout our five county diocesan faith family. If you have not yet par cipated in this opportunity, on behalf of our parish in aid to our larger Diocesan Church, please do so NOW. We want your par cipa on and very much need your support. Thank you in advance for carrying out this blessing to one another. You DO Make a Difference. As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace. -1 Peter 4:8-10 NEEDED and WANTED My Brother’s Keeper will be expanding their outreach ministry to Tuesday evenings.
