Registration for 2004-2005 Calendar

Teachers are still needed for 1st Session,
8:45 to 9:45AM, for grades 4 & 5. Tuition fee is
waived for all teachers and volunteers.

in the Lower Church Hall regarding Sacramental

Understanding Stem Cell Research
The topic of stem cell research has risen to the level of national debate. Surrounding the discussion are many erroneous assumptions and perceptions. To
help clarify the Catholic Church’s view of stem cell research, I share with you
a summary prepared by Rev. Tadeusz Pacholczyk, a Catholic priest of the diocese of Fall River who received a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Yale University,
did post-doctoral research at Mass General Hospital/Harvard Medical School
and advanced studies in Theology and Bioethics in Rome. I am grateful to
Father Herbert Jones, O.Carm for providing this information. There are ten
points in Father Pacholczyk’s article; five will be printed in this week’s bulletin and five in next week’s. His paper is entitled:
The Ten Great Myths in the Debate Over Stem Cell Research
Stem cells can only come from embryos. In fact stem cells can be taken from umbilical cords, the placenta, amniotic fluid, adult tissues and organs such as bone marrow, fat from liposuction, regions of the nose, and even from cadavers up to 20 hours after death.
The Catholic Church is against stem cell research. There are four categories of stem cells: embryonic stem cells, embryonic germ cells, umbilical cord stem cells, and adult stem cells. Given
that germ cells can come from miscarriages that involve no deliberate interruption of pregnancy,
the church really opposes the use of only one of these four categories, i.e., embryonic stem cells.
In other words, the Catholic Church approves three of the four possible types of stem cell research
Embryonic stem cell research has the greatest promise. Up to now, no human being has ever been
cured of a disease using embryonic stem cells. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, have already
cured thousands. There is the example of the use of bone marrow cells from the hipbone to repair scar tissue on the heart after heart attacks. Research using adult cells is 20-30 years ahead
of embryonic stem cells and hold greater promise. This is in part because stem cells are part of
the natural repair mechanisms of an adult body, while embryonic stem cells do not belong in an
adult body (where they are likely to form tumors, and to be rejected as foreign tissue by the recipient). Rather, embryonic stem cells really belong only within in the specialized microenvironment of a rapidly growing embryo, which is a radically different setting from an adult body.
Embryonic stem cell research is against the law. In reality, there is no law or regulation against destroying human embryos for research purposes. While President Bush has banned the use of
federal funding to support research on embryonic stem cell lines created after August 2001, it is
not illegal. Anyone using private funds is free to pursue it.
President Bush created new restrictions to federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. The
1996 Dickey Amendment prohibited the use of federal funds for research that would involve the
destruction of human embryos. Bush’s decision to permit research on embryonic stem cell lines
created before a certain date thus relaxes this restriction from the Clinton era.

As a fun part of Welcoming Weekend at St. John’s,
September 11th and 12th, we will be selling boxes
of Krispy Kreme donuts after all the Masses. We
are also using the sale as a fundraiser for our newly
remodeled library room and parish life center,
which we hope to officially open up to parishioners
in October. We learned that last year alone, the
Krispy Kreme foundation assisted non-profit organizations nationwide in raising over $46 million
for community programs. Appreciating that commitment and knowing the popularity of Krispy
Kreme donuts, we thought it might be fun to try.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Calling all kids! Save the date August 23-27 from
6:00—8:00p.m. for Vacation Bible School to be
held at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 50 Walsh Avenue in Peabody. All children entering grades K
through 6 are welcome to participate. Youth in
grades 7 and above are invited to come and help
with crafts, games and activities. This is a multiparish effort and we can use everyone’s gifts and

El fuego aparece frecuentemente en la Sagrada Escritura como símbolo del Amor de Dios,
que purifica a los hombres de todas sus impurezas (J DHELLY, Diccionario Bíblico). El
amor, como el fuego nunca dice basta (Proverbios 30, 16), tiene la fuerza de las llamas y se
enciende en el trato con Dios. Jesús nos dice en el Evangelio de hoy: Fuego he venido a
traer a la tierra, ¿y qué quiero sino que arda? (Lucas 12, 49). En Cristo alcanza su expresión
máxima el amor divino: Tanto amó Dios al mundo que le entregó a su Hijo Unigénito. El
Señor quiere que su amor prenda en nuestro corazón y provoque un incendio que lo invada
todo. Él nos ama a cada uno con amor personal e individual, como si fuera el único objeto
de su caridad. En ningún momento ha cesado de amarnos, de ayudarnos, de protegernos, de comunicarse
con nosotros; ni siquiera en los momentos de mayor ingratitud de nuestra parte. Este misterio de amor se
realizó de una manera absolutamente particular en su Madre, Santa María, y Ella nos enseña a creer en el
amor sin límites de Dios.
El amor pide más amor, y éste se demuestra en las obras, en el empeño diario por tratar a Dios y por identificar nuestra voluntad con la suya. Muchas veces hemos de decir sí al Amor: al negarnos a nosotros mismos para servir a quienes conviven con nosotros; en la mortificación pequeña, que nos ayuda a guardar la
templanza; en la puntualidad a la hora de comenzar nuestros deberes; en el orden en que dejamos las cosas;
en el esfuerzo que frecuentemente supone hacer un rato de oración, diciéndole al Señor muchas veces que
le amamos; en la aceptación alegre de la voluntad de Dios. El amor también se expresa en el dolor de los
pecados, en la contrición, pues tantas veces –casi sin darnos cuenta- decimos no al amor. Son muchas las
mociones del Espíritu Santo para corresponder a ese Amor infinito con que Jesús nos ama.
Los cristianos hemos de ser fuego que encienda, como Jesús encendió a sus discípulos. Nadie que nos haya
conocido deberá quedar indiferente; nuestro amor debe ser lumbre viva que convierte en puntos de ignición, otras fuentes de amor y de apostolado, a quienes tratamos. El amor verdadero a Dios se manifiesta
enseguida en apostolado, en deseos de que otros conozcan y amen a Cristo: fuego que se robustece en el
trato íntimo con Cristo. Le decimos a Jesús que cuente con nosotros: aquí estoy porque me has llamado. La
Virgen nos ayudará a ser audaces en el apostolado.
Reflexión: Jesús está ya llegando a Jerusalén. Toda la vida de Cristo en san Lucas se ha
desarrollado en llegar a Jerusalén. Jerusalén. En san Lucas. No es un lugar geográfico sino
teológico. Allí es donde va ha tener lugar nuestra salvación. Ante está circunstancia se
preguntan los discípulos: Serán muchos los que se salven. Quienes no han comprendido
casi nada del Reino de Dios, anunciado por Jesús, se mantienen dentro del pensamiento
que la salvación se ajusta a lo que ellos hacen. Así los judíos pensaban que todos los hijos
de Abraham, por razas estaban llamados a la siempre que cumplían la Ley de Moisés. El
resto de la humanidad, los paganos, jamás verían la salvación. De la misma manera, son
muchos los cristianos que piensan que si uno esta bautizado va lo mas al limbo. Estos
poco a poco la fueron convirtiendo la religión en una especie de agencia de viajes al Paraíso y los clientes
podrían adquirir pases con una que otra devoción o repitiendo una novena. La repuesta de Jesús fue entonces, como ahora, que hay que entrar por la puerta estrecha. Esto es por la conversión del corazón y practicar
una religión que proceda del seguimiento de Jesús y la vivencia de su Evangelio. Si no existe esta conversión o este cambio de vida nos harán como a la higuera estéril. (LC 13, 6-9). Es inútil que digamos: hemos
comido y bebido contigo y tú hablabas en nuestras plazas: No se quienes sois.
Oración: Dame humildad, Señor, tu puerta es estrecha.

PAPA ORARÁ EN LOURDES POR “DESPERTAR INTERIOR” DEL HOMBRE
Roma, 12 (NE - eclesiales.org) El Papa Juan Pablo II compartió ayer a los peregrinos congregados para la audiencia general que peregrinará a Lourdes para pedir el auxilio de la
Virgen para sanar el alma del “hombre moderno”. La visita del Papa, que se realizará del
14 al 15 de agosto, conmemorará el 150 aniversario de la proclamación del dogma de la
Inmaculada Concepción.
El mensaje divino que la Virgen dio al mundo en Lourdes, afirmó el Papa, es que “a través
de la oración y la penitencia, la victoria de Cristo puede tocar a todas las personas y todas las sociedades”.
“Para cambiar nuestra conducta, debemos escuchar la voz de nuestra conciencia, donde Dios nos ha dado
la facultad de reconocer el bien y el mal. Es desafortunado que muchas veces el hombre moderno parezca
haber perdido el poder de saber qué es el pecado. Es necesario rezar por él, para que experimente un nuevo
despertar interior, que le permita redescubrir completamente la santidad de la Ley de Dios y los deberes
que de El provienen”, señaló el Pontífice.
El viaje del Pontífice tendrá tres momentos públicos: el rezo del Rosario el sábado por la tarde, una procesión ese mismo día y la celebración de la Eucaristía dominical. El Santo Padre compartió asimismo que
tendrá dos momentos de oración silenciosa en la gruta de Lourdes a su llegada y partida. Justamente, en
esos momentos privados, el Papa confesó que llevará en su corazón “la gratitud y plegarias de toda la Iglesia” y “de todo el mundo, cuya paz y salvación solo pueden provenir de Dios”.

Entendiendo la investigación con las células madre embrionarias
El tema de la investigación con las células madre embrionarias se ha llevado a debate nacional. En
esta discusión hay muchas percepciones erróneas. Para ayudar a los Católicos a entender el punto de vista
de la Iglesia sobre la investigación con las células madre embrionarias, compartiré con ustedes un resumen
preparado por el Padre Tadeusz Pacholczk, un sacerdote católico de la diócesis de Fall River, quien ha
recibido un doctorado en filosofía, en Neurosciencia en la Universidad de Yale, ha hecho una investigación
post doctoral en el Mass General Hospital en la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Harvard y

Los diez grandes mitos en el debate sobre la investigación con las células madre embrionarias.
1. Las células madre solo se obtienen de los embriones. De hecho las células madre se obtienen de los
cordones umbilicales, la placenta, fluidos amnióticos, tejidos adultos y órganos como la medula ósea, grasa
por liposucción, zonas de la nariz y aun de cadáver hasta veinte horas después de la muerte.
2. La iglesia Católica se opone a la investigación de células madre. Hay cuatro categorías de células
madre: células madre de embriones, células embrionicas germinales, células madre del cordón umbilical y
células madre de adultos. Dado que las células germinales se obtienen de nacimientos prematuros que no
fueron interrumpidos deliberadamente, la iglesia realmente se opone al uso de solamente una de las cuatro
categorías, por ejemplo las células madre embrionicas. En otras palabras, la Iglesia Católica aprueba tres de
los cuatro tipos de investigación con células madre.
3. La investigación de células madre tiene un futuro promisorio. Hasta ahora, ningún ser humano se ha
curado de ninguna enfermedad con el uso de células madre de embriones. Células madre de adultos, por
otro lado, si han curado a cientos de enfermos. Hay un ejemplo del uso de células de medula ósea del
hipobone para reparar la cicatriz en el corazón después del ataque cardiaco. Investigaciones en las que se
usaron células de adultos datan de hace 20 o 30 anos y son muy promisorias. Esto es en parte porque las
células madre son parte del mecanismo de reparación natural del cuerpo del adulto, mientras células madre
embrionicas no son compatibles con el cuerpo adulto (pues ellas probablemente formaran tumores y serán
rechazadas como tejido extraño por el receptor). Sin embargo células madre embrionicas son realmente
compatibles y en un micro ambiente a un embrión que se desarrolla rápidamente, lo cual es radicalmente
diferente aplicado de un cuerpo adulto.
4. La investigación de células madre es en contra de la ley. En realidad, no es contra la ley o
regulaciones contra la destrucción de embriones humanos para la investigación. Mientras el Presidente
Bush ha retirado el uso de fondos federales para investigación sobre células madre embrionarias, líneas
creadas después de agosto de 2001. Cualquiera usando fondos privados es libre de continuarlos.
5. El Presidente Bush creo nuevas restricciones a los fondos federales para el financiamiento a la
investigación de células madre embrionicas. La enmienda de Dickey en 1996 prohibiendo el uso de
