Part Five of Five
Contemplate the beautiful promise from
Luke’s Gospel, Chapter 6, verse 38:
“Give and gifts will be given to you; a good
measure, packed together, shaken down, and
overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For
the measure with which you measure will in
return be measured out to you.”
Measuring is a very important concept for a
Christian in our secular, overly materialistic society.
We need to measure what we give in support of the
Church against how much we measure out to
Starbucks, the Illinois Lottery or Glazed and Infused.
There are many charitable concerns that are
constantly clamoring for our money too, some more
worthy than others. It is important to measure these
when deciding where to put our funds so as best to
serve the Kingdom of God. It is also important to
remember that your local Church is your home, and
to thus treat is as such, caring for its people as well
as its structure. It needs to be maintained in all
aspects in order to carry out its mission as given to
us by Christ.
When you give to your local parish, you are
not only supporting its efforts in fulfilling its
sacramental and social mandates, you are also
supporting the Universal Church as each parish tithes
to its bishop, as was explained in Part Two.
Catholic Social Teaching states: “What
individuals can accomplish by their own initiative and
efforts should not be taken from them by a higher
authority. A greater and higher social institution must
not take over the duties of a subordinate organization
and deprive it of its competence. It’s purpose, rather,
is to intervene in a subsidiary fashion (thus offering
help) when individuals or smaller institutions find that
a task is beyond them.” (CCC 1883-1885, 1894)

Contempla la promesa bella del Evangelio de
Lucas, Capitulo 6 Verso 38:
“Den a otros, y Dios les dará a ustedes.
Les dará en su bolsa una medida buena,
apretada, sacudida y repleta.
Dios los medirá a ustedes con la misma
medida con que ustedes midan a otros.”
Midiendo es un concepto muy importante
para un cristiano en nuestra sociedad materia listica,
en nuestro secular. Nosotros tenemos que medir lo
que damos para el apoyo a la Iglesia a lo que damos
a Starbucks, a la Illinois Lottery o “Glazed and
Infused”.
Hay muchas preocupaciones caritativas que
piden constantemente solicitando nuestro dinero,
unos más dignos que otros. Es importante de medir
estos cuando decidimos donde poner nuestros
fondos al donde servirá el Reino de Dios mejor. Es
importante recordarse que su Iglesia local es su
casa, y por lo tanto, debería cuidarla como tal,
cuidar a su pueblo y su estructura. Necesita ser
mantenida en todos los aspectos para llevar a cabo
su misión dada a nosotros por Cristo.
Cuando tú le das a tu Iglesia local, tu solo no
estas apoyando a los esfuerzos en el cumplimiento
de sus sacramentales y los mandatos sociales, estas
también apoyando la Iglesia Universal como cada
parroquia da diezmos a su obispo, como fue
explicado en la Parte Dos.

instituciones pequeñas se vean superadas por sus

There is efficiency in following this principle,
and great satisfaction in taking care of things close to
home, in doing it yourself when you are able, or in a
small group . Local parishes are important!
A good parish meets the needs of its people,
first of all, sacramentally and spiritually, but also
socially and even physically if necessary. A parish
can do these things well if it has many people willing
to share time, talent, and yes, treasure. There is not
much that can be done without a monetary cost.
Wonderful things, things that give glory to
God , things that show we have listened to His Word,
are done every day by strong, vibrant Catholic
parishes. Jesus told us exactly what is expected,
which is “Go, and make disciples”. A true disciple
takes up his cross. A true disciple stands up for the
truth. A true disciple makes sacrifices. A true
disciple, by their very joy in their love for God, makes
more disciples.
As quoted in Part One, God promises
blessings on those who give generously to support
the Kingdom. If you have already decided that your
giving could be more sacrificial, and that you want to
do more, here are a few suggestions. Whether you
already give generously or whether you are starting
with 1% or 2%, make the commitment to increase the
amount over time. Here are some ideas.
If you so not have envelopes, get a box and
use them. This way you will think about giving before
the basket comes around and you will avoid “tipping
God” with your pocket change.
Take some envelopes, for example, two
months worth, and pre-mark them with the amount
your have committed to give. Review your situation
when the months are up and see if you are able to
increase your donation, even a little bit.
If you really want to make your giving
foolproof, consider using our secure online
system. You can select the donation amount and
frequency. You can use your bank account, a debit
card, or a credit card. (We advise credit card use only
when you pay your bill each month, and use it only to
build up airline miles or other perks that are offered.)
Remember, God loves a cheerful giver!
Hay eficiencia en seguir este principio, y una
gran satisfacción en cuidar las cosas cerca de casa, en
haciéndolo uno mismo cuando puedes, o en grupo
pequeño. ¡Las parroquias locales son importantes!
Una buena parroquia satisface las necesidades
de su gente, primero de todo, sacramentales y
espirituales, pero también sociales y también físicas si
es necesario. Una parroquia puede hacer las cosas
bien si tiene muchas personas dispuestas a compartir
su tiempo, talentos y si, sus tesoros. No hay mucho que
s epoda hacer sin costo monetario.
Cosas maravillosas, cosas que dan la gloria a
Dios, cosas que enseñan que si escuchamos Su
Palabra, son hechas todo los días por parroquias
católicas fuertes y vibrantes. Jesús nos dijo
exactamente qué es lo que él esperaba cual es “Vallan,
y hagan discípulos”. Un verdadero discípulo lleva su
cruz. Un verdadero discípulo defiende la verdad. Un
verdadero discípulo hace sacrificios. Un verdadero
discípulo por su gozo en su amor por Dios, hace más
discípulos.
Como citado en Parte Una, Dios promete
bendiciones aquello que dan generosamente para
apoyar el Reino. Si tú ya has decidido que puede dar o
puede con más sacrificio, y usted quiere hacer más,
aquí tiene unas sugerencias. Si tú ya das
generosamente o si tú empezaras con 1% o 2%, haga
su compromiso a aumentar la cantidad durante el
tiempo. Aquí tienen unas ideas.
Si usted no está usando sobres, busque una
cajita y úsela. De esta manera usted pensara en lo que
va a dar antes que llegue la canasta y evitara de “darle
una propina a Dios” con su cambio en su bolsillo.

“They came to Capernaum and, once inside the
house, he began to ask them; ‘What were you arguing about on
the way?’ But they remained silent. They had been discussing
among themselves on the way who was the greatest Then he
sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them. ’If anyone
wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of
all.’ Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his
arms around it, he said to them, ‘whoever receives one child
such as this in my name receives me, and whoever receives
me, receives not me but the One who sent me.’” Mark 9:33-37
The disciples in this Gospel text were not much
different from the High School boys that I taught for many
years at Quigley. They are pretty juvenile here, Jesus on
the one hand is talking about profound aspects of our
faith and humanity’s relationship with God, and the “boys”
are having juvenile discussions about who’s the greatest,
and so on. Just yesterday I spent a very sobering day, all
day in fact with the Archdiocesan Priest Council. The
discussion for the most part, was on topics that are hard
to talk about: ongoing fallout from the priest abuse
scandal, 20-25% of our Roman Catholics just walking
away from the practice of the faith in the last ten years,
many Church’s on the verge of closing here in Chicago
simply because no one is going to them, and more. The
discussion topics were all tough, but lunch on the other
hand was just the opposite, with banter about the ongoing
battle between the Cubs and the Sox, how the Bears are
looking for the new fall season and so forth. It was just
the “Boys” reverting to juvenile behavior, the polar
opposite of the council’s sobering agenda.
If you look closely at the Gospel theme of the last
couple of Sundays, we are being challenged to walk as
adults in the faith, not continuing to hold on to juvenile
perspectives or to act like children. Recall this past
Sunday Jesus asked us as his disciples to walk in his
footsteps and to carry are our own “individual” crosses as
his disciples, no small task! This Sunday Jesus
challenges us as his disciples to put on the “attitude” of
children, to be trustful, docile, obedient, but not to behave
like children. Sadly, this important message of our Lord
gets lost in our world today, even among the clergy! In
this instance I am thinking about the above-mentioned
meeting, and the “boys” jostling among themselves to get
their message heard, or to get noticed by the Archbishop.
Again this is not at all unlike the
disciples on the road with our Lord.
So much for the Gospel! So, please
strive as a disciple to be childlike in
attitude but not in conduct .

Llegaron a Cafarnaúm, y una vez en casa, les preguntó:
“¿De qué discutían por el camino?” Pero ellos se quedaron
callados, porque en el camino habían discutido sobre quién de
ellos era el más importante. Entonces Jesús se sentó, llamó a
los Doce y les dijo: “Si alguno quiere ser el primero, que sea el
último de todos y el servidor de todos”. Después, tomando a un
niño, lo puso en medio de ellos, lo abrazó y les dijo: “El que
reciba en mi nombre a uno de estos niños, a mí me recibe. Y el
que me reciba a mí, no me recibe a mí, sino a aquel que me ha
enviado”. Mc 9: 33-37
Los discípulos en este texto del el Evangelio no
eran muy diferente de los muchachos de la secundaria
que le di clases por muchos años en la escuela Quigley.
Son bastante juveniles aquí, en la otra mano Jesús está
hablando sobre aspectos profundos de nuestra fe y
relaciones de humanidad con Dios, y los “muchachos”
están discutiendo de quien era el más grande. Justo ayer
yo pase un día que daba de pensar, de hecho con el
Concejal de Sacerdote de la Arquidiócesis, todo el día.
Por la gran parte las discusiones eran en temas que sin
difíciles de hablar de ellos: las consecuencias en el curso
de los escándalos de abusos de sacerdotes, 20-25% de
nuestros Católicos Romanos se están yendo de la
práctica de la fe en los últimos diez años, muchas de las
Iglesia están a punto de ser serrada aquí en Chicago
simplemente porque nadie está asistiendo, y más. Los
temas en las discusiones eran todas difíciles, pero el
almuerzo en la otra mano era lo opuesto, con bromas
sobre la batalla entre los Cubs y Sox, como se ven los
Bears en esta temporada y así sucesivamente. Era solo
los chicos volviendo al comportamiento juvenil, el polo
opuesto del orden del día de la agenda del consejo.
Si tú miras bien al tema de los últimos Evangelio de los
domingos, nosotros estamos retados a caminar como
adultos en la fe, no continuar de mantener perspectivas
juveniles o de actuar como niños. Recuérdese este
domingo pasado Jesús nos pidió como sus discípulos a
caminar en sus pasos y de cargar nuestras cruz
“individual” como sus discípulos, ¡no una tarea fácil! Este
domingo Jesús nos reta como sus discípulos de poner
una “actitud” de niño, de ser confiado, dócil, obediente,
pero de no comportarnos como niños. Tristemente, este
importante mensaje de nuestro Señor se pierde en
nuestro mundo hoy, ¡e incluso entre el clero! En este
instante yo estoy pensando acerca la reunión
mencionada aquí arriba, y los “muchachos” empujándose
si para hacer llegar su mensaje oído, o para ser notados
por el Arzobispo. Otra vez esto n o
es tan diferente de los discípulos en
el camino con el Señor. ¡Tanto por el
Evangelio! Así, por favor luche como
discípulo de ser como un niño en
actitud pero no la conducta.
