Thanks for your attention this past Saturday & Sunday. It has been suggested that we follow up with information on the help needed. We have volunteer positions here at St. Johns helping as drivers, something families can do together; packaging food boxes for delivery; and calling people to see if they will be home at time of delivery. Portland Council Main Office also needs help with answering phones, packing food boxes and computer skills. This is a time slot position and very much needed. Also we can deliver, as needed, if someone is willing to stay or come in at special hours. Any suggestions as to how you can help are also welcome. It is a rewarding volunteer opportunity. Call Rick McCann with any questions! 503-709-4503 St. Vincent de Paul Update In the month of June, we helped 118 families consisting of 428 individuals. We delivered 11,890lbs of food to 102 of those households and gave $519.45 in rent and utilities help to 5 of those families. We are always in need of cooking oil, small containers of oatmeal/hot cereal, canned tomatoes, canned fruit, potatoes, peanut butter, commercial jellies & jam, jiffy muffin mixes and hearty soups and Top Ramen. Our donation barrel is located in the back of church (NO CLOTHES PLEASE) and our boxes will be out on Saturday & Sunday, August 6th & 7th. Thank you for your generous help to these families in need. May God Bless you. Remember, you are now able to donate to SVDP through the Parish Pay Program. contact Barbara Downey in the office @503-654-5449. July 24, 2016 - 17th Sunday In Ordinary Time Adult ED: Epic: A Journey through Church History: Faith Study planning. Beginning Wednesday September 21st and Thursday September 22nd we are offer a 20 week session of the History of the Catholic Church. Registration will be taken until August 18th when I need to order the text books. We have a wonderful response to this series so please call and join the opportunity to learn more about the interesting history of our Church. Learn about the major people, places, and events of the past two-thousand yeas in Church history. Know the twelve time periods of Church history, learn the true story of the Crusades and much more Formed: Adult Education Use FORMED to deepen your prayer life. As we learn in today’s readings Jesus teaches us to pray to the Father as a father and friend. But if you are like most Catholics you often feel as though in prayer you are talking to yourself or worse no one at all. With the series Lectio – Prayer Dr. Tim Gray will show you how to make prayer an effective effort of love and intimacy. In six video sessions, Prayer: Finding Intimacy with God captures the secret to opening our hearts and minds to scripture as the means to hear from God and then respond in conversation, basking in His presence and resolving to live in and through His love. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults People come to a Catholic RCIA for many reasons: • Some want to better understand a family member's religion. • Some have children in the school and want to understand the faith their child is being taught. •Some are attracted to the Catholic Church for its style of worship, or its moral beliefs, or its sense of tradition. •Some Catholics want to update their own knowledge of the Catholic faith. For whatever you are interested in, we hope you feel welcome! The Catholic Inquiry is a time to explore and learn about Catholicism. It is also a first step for adults who wish to be baptized or for people who have already been baptized in another denomination and now wish to be Catholic. We hope you feel at home in our church and welcome to join us. Call or email Pat at the above address. RCIA for teens and children: is a process for young people who are not baptized Catholic to meet in a very comfortable environment. They have the opportunity for informal education on the Catholic Church, to ask questions, and prepare for the Sacrament of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. If you have a teen that has not received their sacraments please call Pat to set up an appointment to begin the process. RCIA-for children. This process is designed for children ten years old and older who have not received their sacraments. Classes meet every week at the parish. This process will introduce your child to the basic teachings of the Catholic Church and prepare them for the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Eucharist. If you know someone who has been asking questions about the Catholic faith please invite them to our parish RCIA sessions. RCIA sessions are also very helpful if you are a Catholic but have been away from the Church for a few years. We cover the basic teachings of the Church and it is a very comfortable setting. Pleas call Pat at 503-654-5449 or email at [email protected] for more details.
