Page Two January 3, 2016 PASTOR’S COLUMN “You, O Lord, are my lamp, my God who lightens my darkness.” (Psalm 18:30) Electricity is a fairly dependable resource in 2016. Aside from the occasional natural disaster that temporarily disrupts service, we can count on electricity to provide for more and more of our needs, from heating, cooking, and charging cell phones to early stages of driving and perhaps even flying by electricity one day. It was quite a different story when this Psalm was prayed for the first time. Yes, there were candles, oil lamps, and fireplaces to provide light after sunset but it was often limited, costly, and laborious to maintain. One could not just get up and change the lightbulb when it went dark. The image of God as a light in the darkness was, is, and always will be a powerful expression of the grace of God in our lives. There are many experiences of darkness, especially spiritual darkness that comes from sin, ignorance, and an unwillingness to change our lives to be more like Jesus. Our human nature needs the redemptive experience of God’s light. It is a light that shines in every part of our earthly condition because God has come to us—as us. Jesus was born into our world in order that every person in every generation may be illuminated by his divinity. The Air Force Academy has a monument in which a great truth is inscribed: “Man’s flight through life is sustained by the power of his knowledge.” Our Lord teaches us an even greater and perfect truth: “I am the light of the world.” At the Easter Vigil, the Paschal Candle is lit and the words “Christ our Light” is proclaimed to the world. In every baptism, a candle is presented to the parents with the words: “Receive the Light of Christ.” At every funeral, the Paschal Candle is lit to remind us that Christ pierces the darkness of sin and death with his eternal light. As 2016 begins, may we too live in the Light of Christ. Fr. Jack PARISH MISSION: “GOD’S MISSION OF MERCY” Invite a family member or friend to join you at our upcoming parish mission, ”God’s Mission of Mercy” 7 PM on January 12, 13, and 14 in the Parish Hall. The themes for the three evenings are: Jan 12: the Divine Mercy of Our God; Jan 13: the Sacred Heart of Jesus; Jan 14: the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Presented by Stephen J Binz, Catholic biblical scholar and popular speaker. BECOMING CATHOLIC Do you know someone who might be interested in becoming a Catholic? Our parish offers year round information sessions. Contact Paula Dougherty in the Parish Center. WINTER BIBLE STUDY The Gospel According to Luke will be the topic of our Winter Bible Study that begins the first week of January. Marked by the compassion of Jesus, the gospel stories of Luke demonstrate the universal nature of Jesus’ mission. You may register for sessions held on Sunday mornings, Tuesday evenings, or Wednesday mornings. Registration information is available on the Parish website, in the pamphlet rack in the rear of the church, and in the Parish Center office. Page Three January 3, 2016 The Epiphany of the Lord REGISTER FOR ADULT CONFIRMATION In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Epiphany celebrates God’s mercy shining on the magi from a guiding star. Their kingdoms were far from Jerusalem, their religions far from God’s covenant with Israel. At first the star led the magi to Jerusalem, where they could “recalculate” their quest with the help of God’s own “GPS,” the Jewish scriptures. How challenging and humbling for the magi to discover that they would find the world’s Messiah not in a palace but with a poor couple in an insignificant village. That’s where God’s mercy, shining in the star, led the magi to worship Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Today the magi invite us to “recalculate” our life’s journey during this Jubilee Year—to follow the star of God’s mercy along the way of humble love, to discover a renewed personal relationship with Jesus ourselves and so become “guiding stars” leading other seekers to find Jesus, too. Our parish program to prepare adults (19 and older) for Confirmation begins January 10. Sessions meet on Sunday evenings for three months. The Confirmation liturgy will take place in April, 2016. Pre-registration is required. Contact Paula Dougherty in the Parish Center to set up a registration appointment. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
