WHATsS INSIDE: - Cathedral of Christ the King
December 6, 2015 second Sunday of advent The Immaculate Conception The Immaculate Conception, celebrated this year on Tuesday, December 8, is one of the most significant feasts of Our Lady, and is a holyday of obligation. Two stained glass windows in our Cathedral depict images of the Immaculate Conception. First, The Glories of Mary window located to the left of Our Lady’s altar displays scenes from the life and legends of the Blessed Mother, including two panels illustrating mother and son, under whom St. Cyril of Alexandra proclaims Mary’s Immaculate Conception. 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT’S INSIDE: Advent Wreath Page 2 Parish Advent Penance Evening Page 3 Christmas Eve Pageants Page 5 Art Slide Show Page 7 Habitat Holiday Fundraiser Page 8 Around the Archdiocese Page 9 Hispanic Pages Pages 10-11 A second window (pictured) located near the exterior sacristy door, which is easily visible from the exterior of the Cathedral, depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary robed in blue and white with a rosary at her wrist and roses at her feet. Her radiant halo proclaims “Je suis L’Immaculee Conception”; “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Both windows are illustrated in the Cathedral book Jewels of the Cathedral. Mass times for the celebration of the Immaculate Conception take place on Monday, December 7 at 5:30 pm (vigil) and Tuesday, December 8 at 6:45 am, 8:10 am, 9:15 am (Christ the King School), 12:10 pm, and 5:30 pm. Please Note the 12:10 Mass on Immaculate Conception, Archbishop Gregory is opening the Year of Mercy and the Holy Door (see below). Pope Francis Formally Begins the Year of Mercy December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016 On Tuesday, December 8, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door in the atrium of St. Peter’s Basilica, formally beginning the extraordinary jubilee, the Year of Mercy. On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope. The Pope’s Year of Mercy will highlight the Catholic Church's "mission to be a witness of mercy." The door symbolizes a passage or transition into a special year of evangelization and prayer. Pope Francis said that he wants the year to be a time for Catholics to contemplate just how merciful God has been to them and to understand better how they are called to be merciful to others in turn. The Advent wreath, one of our most important Advent traditions, is a circle, made of evergreen branches that has no beginning or end. The circular shape of the Advent Wreath is used to symbolize God the Father and eternal life. The wreath holds four candles that are lit over the four weeks of Advent. Traditionally, each of the four candles on an Advent wreath has their own meaning. The lighting of the first purple candle that occurred last week symbolizes Hope, reminding us that Jesus is coming. The lighting of the second purple candle of Advent symbolizes Faith, reminding us of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. Our Lady of Guadalupe December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas is a National Celebration observed throughout the whole continent and goes back to the 16th century. Chronicles of that period tell us the story. While walking from his village to Mexico City in the early morning of December 9, 1531, the peasant Juan Diego saw on the slopes of the Hill of Tepeyac a vision of a girl of fifteen or sixteen years of age, surrounded by light. Speaking to him in the local language, she asked that a church be built at that site, in her honor. From her words, Juan Diego recognized the Lady as the Virgin Mary. Diego told his story to the Spanish Archbishop, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, who instructed him to return to Tepeyac Hill, and ask the lady for a miraculous sign to prove her identity. The Virgin told Juan Diego to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill. Although December was very late in the growing season for flowers to bloom, Juan Diego found at the usually barren hilltop Castilian roses, not native to Mexico, which the Virgin arranged in his peasant tilma cloak. When Juan Diego opened the cloak before Bishop Zumárraga on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and in their place was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, miraculously imprinted on the fabric. 4 SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT Christ the King School Christ the King School creates a nurturing, Christ-centered environment based on its Catholic tradition of fostering academic excellence, individual responsibility, spirituality, and growth of the whole child, in order to spread the Good News of Jesus in word and deed. Advent Questions and Challenges Carole Eipers of Riverside, IL Currently, Executive Director of Catechetics for William H. Sadlier, Inc. Isaiah says, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” But that’s not all of it. He says, “In the desert prepare the way of the Lord.” Where’s the desert in our town? Where’s the desert in our parish? Where’s the desert in my family? Where’s the desert in my heart? What is a desert? What words describe one? Hot, barren, empty, lonesome, fearsome. The desert is where no one can live for long, where not much grows, where we become uncomfortable and want to leave. The desert through which we must prepare the Lord’s way is not in the Holy Land, not in Bethlehem. It’s here -- in our town, in our parish, beginning with our own hearts. Jesus has come. He is here with us. And so, for Advent to be a time of welcoming, we must invite Him where He’s never been -- the barren, empty, lifeless spot in our lives where we’ve never let Him in before. 6 The desert is the corner of our heart where we are uneasy, where it hurts. It is the corner that needs Christmas badly -healing, and the touch of Jesus’ love. It’s that place in our heart, in our life, where we say: “Yes, Jesus, You can have everything BUT... I’ll love everyone EXCEPT . . . I’ll be generous UNTIL . . . I’ll forgive IF . . . Let’s look at our hearts -- the beautiful places there, the loving feelings, the forgiving moments, the unselfish giving. The desert puts limits on our love and hinders our growing. Perhaps our desert is the way we treat someone close to us, or a failure to use our talents. Maybe it’s a grudge we hold and refuse to let go. Maybe it’s a corner of our heart where way deep down we don’t really like ourselves. We have to look hard to discover the personal desert within us that is denying admittance to Christmas. Christmas is not so much for children as for those who have grown enough to realize that Christmas can happen in a way it never has before. We have only to find our desert and prepare the way of the Lord for His coming. And let’s keep looking beyond all the wonderful things (and there are many) and try to find that one spot, however small or insignificant, where Jesus has not been, where we have allowed Him no access. It is that part of our heart we’ve forgotten about or we’ve jealously guarded, saying: “No! I won’t change that! No one will get in there!” It is the only place where we can really celebrate Christmas -where it has never been celebrated before. “In the desert prepare the way of the Lord.” First we have to find the desert. We have to find that one last spot which is shielded from love, which is protected from what Jesus might ask. His coming -- His Advent -depends on our invitation, our welcome. What is more exciting than to be invited to go someplace you’ve never been before. He’ll love it! And His love will turn our deserts into oases. In the desert prepare the way of the Lord! What is my personal desert? SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT Incarnation and Nativity: Art Slide Show Sunday, December 13th at 7pm in Kenny Hall.
