LIBRARY NEWS
DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
Voters turned down the library district’s November
referendum by a margin of 2:1. Regardless of the outcome,
having a funding question on the ballot expanded public
awareness of the library, its services, locations, and challenges.
Thank you for voting! Your participation in the democratic
process is so vitally important. Thank you, also, to the many
community organizations and local boards who allowed us to
give a Referendum Facts presentation at their meetings so that
they could be well informed.
Obtaining this concrete feedback about the community’s
willingness to fund library services takes us back to the
drawing board to reconsider options for addressing the service
challenges posed by the population growth of the past 20 years.
The needs are well documented and still exist.
We look forward to more community engagement and
feedback as we continue to explore solutions. In the meantime,
we’ll continue to provide the very best service possible with
currently available resources.
In keeping with the library’s strategic plan, we expanded
services this year for one of our largest underserved user
groups, Latinos, who make up 32% of our service population.
Kate from Information Services, and Maggie from Children’s Services, are working to
expand services to our Latino users with programs for adults and children.
Club de Conversación provides an opportunity to practice speaking English in everyday situations. ¡Leamos! is a pre-ESL online
literacy course that teaches non-literate Spanish-speaking adults to read and write. Obtenga Sy Ciudadanía Estadounidense covers
the basics of the citizenship process.
This February, we’re offering a comprehensive ten week course that takes permanent residents looking to become citizens step by
step through the entire process. Citizenship 101 will cover the N-400 Application for Naturalization and attendees will practice
every question and answer for the Civics section of the Naturalization exam.
We are pleased to reintroduce Spanish storytimes on Tuesdays and Fridays this winter. Students in D300 dual language programs
will find attending these a good opportunity to practice their Spanish outside of school.
Another underserved user group is children with special needs or disabilities and their families. At a staff meeting this year, we
invited an organization called JJ’s List to provide training on how to communicate comfortably and appropriately with customers,
co-workers or potential hires who have disabilities. Our children’s librarians then developed “Bring Your Own Abilities”
storytime, which is being offered for the first time in February.
Browse our newsletter, and keep it handy in the coming
months. There is something for everyone at the Fox
River Valley Public Libraries. (And we have even started
brainstorming already to bring you the best summer
reading challenge ever…).

TURN ON YOUR CHECKOUT HISTORY
ANNUAL MITTEN TREE
Have you ever wondered how many materials you've checked out from the
library? Or forgotten the title or author of a book you read and wished you
could look it up?
Keep some fingers warm this winter by
donating new infant, children’s and
adult mittens, scarves, and hats for
our traditional Mitten Tree, located
in the Children’s Department on
the lower level of the Dundee
Library from November 13
through December 16.
You can keep track of that by turning on the "Checkout History" in your
online library account at www.frvpld.info. (The function is not retroactive; it
starts compiling the history once it is turned on, so the sooner you enable it,
the sooner your list will start.)
From the library's home page, click on
my account, found on the menu bar. Sign
in, and follow this sequence of clicks:
