Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process
by which adults who have not been baptized enter
the church and receive the sacraments of baptism,
confirmation and 1st Holy Communion. Please call the
rectory if you are interested.
Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated on a scheduled
Sunday each month at 1:30pm in the Church. Parents
must attend our required Baptismal Preparation class
prior to the Baptism of their children. Classes are held
according to the published schedule at 1:30pm in the
basement of the rectory, entrance ground level on 46th
Street. Please call the rectory to set up the Baptism.

Jesus has come not only to bring Jesus ha venido no sólo para traer
peace but also division

Having reminded the apostles and the crowd that facing the coming judgment
takes patience, Jesus now goes on to speak of how difficult it will be to wait. He
tells them that he has come to set the earth on fire. Recall that in chapter 3 of
Luke's Gospel, John the Baptist tells the crowd that he is baptizing with water,
but someone mightier is coming who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.
The fire Jesus speaks of here is the distress caused by the coming judgment. It
is also the fire of the Spirit that Luke, in the Acts of the Apostles, will describe
descending on the disciples on Pentecost. That fire will strengthen them to go
out to the whole world to preach the good news of Jesus' Resurrection.
Jesus will be the first to experience the distress of the coming judgment. His
baptism will be the conflict into which he will be immersed as he approaches
Jerusalem and his death on the cross. His followers will not be spared that distress. The angels at Jesus' birth proclaimed peace on earth, and Simeon, holding
the baby Jesus in the Temple, said to God: “Master, now you may let your servant
go in peace.” Here Jesus tells the crowd not to think he has come to bring peace;
he has come to bring division. Simeon said as much when he turned to Mary
and said that the child was destined for the rise and fall of many and to be a sign
that will be contradicted. Peace is the ultimate end of the Kingdom of God, but
peace has a price. Jesus is warning the crowd that wherever the Word of God is
heard and acted upon, division occurs. Fathers will be divided against sons and
mothers against daughters.
The coming judgment forces us to look at the implications of our commitments. As Jesus warned in last Sunday's Gospel, a commitment of faith requires
us to change our attitude toward material possessions and to take even more
seriously our moral responsibilities. Here he reminds the crowd that those who
commit to him will find it affects the way they relate to friends and family members. The angel who announced the birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah said
John would go before Jesus to turn the hearts of fathers toward their children.
But a commitment to Jesus forces us to change the way we live our lives, and this
can put strains on relationships.
We don't expect to hear such difficult words from Jesus in the Gospel. But it is
good to be reminded once in a while that the decision to do the right thing, the
good thing, is not always easy and without conflict. Jesus himself did not make
easy decisions and avoid conflict. In today's reading, he reminds his followers to
be prepared for difficult decisions and conflict as well.

con amigos y familiares. El ángel que anunció el nacimiento de Juan el Bautista a
Zacarías dijo que Juan iría delante de Jesús para hacer volver los corazones de los
padres hacia sus hijos. Sin embargo, un compromiso con Jesús nos obliga a cambiar la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas, y esto puede causar dificultad en las
relaciones.

The Food Pantry will be closed for the month of August. Our stock is depleted
and we need your help to replenish our shelves. Please consider donating to
the food pantry any non perishable item: Macaroni, Jar sauce, tuna, peanut
butter, cereal, jelly, soup, vegetables, fruit, can potatoes, beans, rice, mac &
cheese, crackers and cookies. Monetary donations are welcome as well. Please
make checks out to the St. Vincent Food Pantry. We are also taking gently used
clothes. Food Pantry will resume September 8 from 3 - 5. God Bless you for your
generosity!
These past weeks we have been receiving some very heavy rain storms. Praise
God, we were able to get the most of the leaks in our roof fixed. The cost of these
repairs to our facility was $89,600. If we had let it go, the water damage would
have quickly caused even more problems for our historic church building. We
are very grateful that many of our parishioners have stepped forward to make
donations to cover this expense. An update will be provided in the coming
weeks. If you would like to make a contribution to help it is important that you
restrict your donation for this specific project. If paying by check, please put the
words “roof repair” in the memo line. Cash donations can be placed in an envelope also clearly marked the same way. Thank you for your continued generous
support to our parish.

You can learn a lot from the prayers
that we say. When I was going
through the preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the version
of the Act of Contrition we learned
read: “O my God, I am heartily sorry
for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the
loss of heaven and the pains of hell,
but most of all because they offend
Thee, my God, Who art all-good and
deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to
sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.” Today, when we prepare youngsters for the sacrament,
the prayer they are taught says: “My
God, I am sorry for my sins with all
my heart. In choosing to do wrong
and failing to do good, I have sinned
against You, whom I should love
above all things. I firmly intend, with
Your help, to do penance, to sin no
more, and to avoid whatever leads
me to sin.”
Theology did not change in these last
40 odd years, but these two forms of
the Act of Contrition are strikingly
different. It is frightening to speak of

“the loss of heaven and the pains of
hell.” This remains the consequence
of our sins today, even though it is not
mentioned in the updated version of
the prayer. It is Jesus’ ultimate desire
that we are all one and he reminds us
that “if you love me, you will keep my
commandments.” His love is unconditional. What happens when people actively chose not to follow Christ
and His commandments? This is
precisely what Jesus is speaking of in
our Gospel passage. The decision to
follow or not follow in the footsteps
of Christ will divide households and
families. The blazing fire will destroy
all that is not of God and purify those
who live in His love for life eternal.
Luke wants us to understand that
there are consequences for our actions. We may feel that not attending Mass on Sunday is not a mortal
sin, or that going to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation is not necessary to receive God’s forgiveness. Do you really want to risk the decision which will
result in the loss of heaven and the
pains of hell to be based on your feelings rather than the Word of God?
Se puede aprender mucho de las oraciones que decimos. Cuando yo estaba
preparando para el Sacramento de la
Reconciliación, la versión del acto de

del acto de contrición son notablemente diferentes. Es aterrador hablar
de "la pérdida del cielo y las penas del
infierno." Esta sigue siendo la consecuencia de nuestros pecados hoy en
día, a pesar de que no se menciona en
la versión actualizada de la oración. Es
deseo de Jesús de que todos somos uno
y nos recuerda que "si me amáis, guardad mis mandamientos." Su amor es
incondicional. ¿Qué sucederá cuando
la gente elige activamente, no seguir a
Cristo y sus mandamientos? Esto es precisamente lo que Jesús está hablando
de en nuestro pasaje del Evangelio. La
decisión de seguir o no seguir los pasos
de Cristo dividirá a los hogares y las familias. El fuego llameante va a destruir
todo lo que no es de Dios y purificar los
que viven en su amor por la vida eterna.
Lucas nos quiere dar entender que hay
consecuencias de nuestras acciones.
Podemos pensar que no asistir a misa
el domingo no es un pecado mortal, o
que el Sacramento de la Reconciliación

Bl. Miriam Teresa Demjanovich parish is sponsoring at Workshop of Prayer
and Life of Rev. Ignacio Larrañaga. The program will be held each Friday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 beginning on Friday 8/19 - Friday 11/25 for a total of 15
sessions. We will meet in the St. Joseph Room at St. Mary, Star of Sea church.
This workshop will be in Spanish with the vision of having it in English in a

unique. The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark invites all grieving fathers to a morning of prayer, sharing, and discussion, away
from societal expectations, in the hope it will provide a special place of understanding and healing. The Support Group for Fathers Whose Children Have
Died will meet on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Notre Dame RC Church (in

Every three years the Archdiocese of Newark sponsors a pilgrimage to the Basilica of
the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. The next one
will take place on Saturday, 10/22. The pilgrimage this year is dedicated to the Extraordinary Holy Year, a Jubilee of Mercy celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the conclusion of
the Second Vatican Council. Representatives of each parish here in Bayonne are working to coordinate busses to bring us there and back. If you are interested In joining us,

Have you lived, worked or attended school in Hudson, Essex or Union counties for the
past 4 years? You may be eligible for free housing counseling service through Catholic
Charities. Services include foreclosure, homelessness prevention, fair housing education, pre and post purchase counseling and more. Services are immediately available

Many feel that just because they have always been in the parish that they are automatically registered. This is not the case. If you are not receiving offering envelopes and
various parish mailings, chances are that you are not registered at the new parish. We
welcome everyone to worship with us. Membership in a parish community involves an
active choice on the part of the individual who takes the initiative to step forward to say “I
want to belong.” All you need to do is come into the office and register. Membership with
your parish combined with contribution envelope use is a requirement in order for you
to obtain a sponsorship certificate for baptism and confirmation. Come forward and be
