THE PEOPLE OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH GATHER FOR THE WORSHIP OCTOBER 25, 2015 OF GOD TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST REFORMATION SUNDAY 11:00 A.M. We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “All human nature vigorously resists grace because grace changes us and the change is painful.” - Flannery O’Connor “Grace is not part of consciousness; it is the amount of light in our souls, not knowledge nor reason.” - Pope Francis “Reformation, like education, is a journey, not a destination.” - Mary Harris Jones And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. To God be the power for ever and ever. - 1 Peter 5:10-11 “Grant that I may not pray alone with the mouth; help me that I may pray from the depths of my heart.” - Martin Luther G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this prayer by Rev. Be still my soul: for God is on your side Be still my soul: the waves and winds still know The voice that calmed them in this world below. God’s presence is a safe place to hide, always ready to help and comfort. Be not afraid! When the world is topsy-turvey, when the future is uncertain, God’s presence is a safe place to hide. Be not afraid! Be not afraid of the past, present, or future—God is in all. God offers stability among us while everything changes. When the nations are in an uproar, we will listen to God’s voice: Be not afraid! Marvel at Creation’s beauty, remember the Creator’s faithfulness to our ancestors— Moses, Miriam, Esther, Daniel, Mary, Peter, Mary Magdalene, Paul, Hildegard, Thomas Aquinas, Francis, Luther, Mother Teresa. Behold! God is with us! Behold! This is our God whose presence is a safe place to hide! Refrain. MORNING PRAYER Yolanda Appiah-Kubi, Deacon of the Week Good morning Father, Mother, God. We rise early to thank you for the breaking of a new day. We know that with you, blessings are new every day. We praise you, oh Lord, for your steadfast love, and for the cyclical certainty of seed time and harvest. Incline your spirit toward us, and protect our hearts during our season of change and renewal. We entreat you dear Lord to hold our hands, that we might hear your voice, and follow in your paths. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST Yolanda Appiah-Kubi La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Make Us One MAKE US ONE Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING Allyson Robinson People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD MUSICAL MEDITATION Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, from Cantata 147 J.S. Bach (1685-1750) Teresa Blessing, Mezzo-Soprano HEBREW LESSON Jeremiah/Jeremías 31:31-34 Reverend Zehyoue 31The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more. EPISTLE LESSON Romans/Romanos 3:19-31 Reverend Glaze 19Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20For ‘no human being will be justified in his sight’ by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21But now, irrespective of law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. 29Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. 31Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia Melchior Vulpius (c. 1560 – 1616) Teresa Blessing, Cantor Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! 31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ 33They answered him, ‘We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, “You will be made free”?’ 34Jesus answered them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN (586) Open My Eyes, That I May See Abre mis ojos a la luz OPEN MY EYES Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou has for me Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine! Abre mis ojos a la luz, tu rostro quiero ver, Jesús Pon en mi corazón tu bondad, y dame paz y santidad Humildemente acudo a ti, porque tu tierna voz oí Mi guía sé, Espíritu Consolador. Open my ears that I may hear voices of truth thou sendest clear And while the wave-notes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine! Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
