All About Math
6th grade math is currently working on greatest common factor, least common
multiple, and the distributive property. We will finish up the Number Operation Fluency
Unit with decimal operations. Our next unit is Ratios, Rates, and Proportions.
The set of skills that our children need today extends beyond the paper and pencil calculation skills that dominated math instruction that most parents know. In addition to having a
good understanding of number facts, there are other important skills such as reasoning,
problem solving, and the communication of mathematical ideas that are essential. This year
in 7th grade math, students will be learning to model and explain math problems using a variety of manipulatives. The year started with students reviewing integers, but also starting to
utilize different operations for integers. Students have been able to use number lines, twocolor counters, and algeblocks to provide them with a more hands-on approach to math.
The students will also be learning how to solve problems using the different operations with
decimals and fractions. Our next unit in math covers expressions, equations, and geometric applications. In this unit, students will be using variables in equations and expressions to
solve real-world problems. In the second unit, students will also be learning about formulas
for area and circumference of a circle, as well as learning more about the different types of
angles. Students will be learning how to solve real-world mathematical problems involving
area, volume, and surface area of two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects. This year,
we have also started a new supplemental program called IXL. IXL is an online site that has
math lessons aligned to the Common Core Standards for students to use to practice their
skills. Each student has their own IXL account login and password that is able to be utilized
at home in addition to school. This is a great opportunity for students to have extra practice.
This month in their math classes, 8th grade students will be building the foundations of
Algebra and Number Theory. Using the materials provided in our TextBook Pilot, as
well as the new and improved District Curriculum Guide, students will be working towards objectives in a variety of hands-on ways. Having previously mastered solving one
and two step equations, students will build on these skills by solving equations which
contain multiple steps. These steps include distributive property, combining like terms,
and inverse operations. To improve their mastery of Number Theory, students will working with exponent rules, as well as operations with Scientific Notation. After the month's
end, our students will tackle a variety of geometric applications to finish out the first
quarter.

El sexto grado en matemáticas está trabajando en el máximo común divisor, mínimo común

programa suplementario llamado IXL. IXL es un sitio en línea que tiene clases de matemáticas
alineados con las normas básicas comunes para los estudiantes a utilizar para practicar sus
habilidades. Cada estudiante tiene su propio nombre de usuario y contraseña de la cuenta IXL
que es capaz de ser utilizado en el hogar, además de la escuela. Esta es una gran oportunidad
para que los estudiantes tengan más práctica.
Este mes en sus clases de matemáticas, los estudiantes de 8º grado estarán construyendo
