The Ascension of the Lord
June 1, 2014
He was lifted up,
and a cloud took him from their sight.
— Acts 1:9
A MISSION FROM THE MOUNTAIN
Matthew is the only one of the evangelists who does not speak explicitly of
or recount the departure of Jesus from his followers. Mark and Luke recount the Ascension, each in his own way; and John
consistently has Jesus speak of the necessity of his departure so the Paraclete might come. Matthew situates his final scene
for Jesus on top of a mountain in Galilee (not outside Jerusalem, as Luke does). This is the region where his mission
originated, and throughout his Gospel the mountaintop has been the place for him to teach his followers. (We are familiar
with the “Sermon on the Mount” from Matthew.) And here Jesus re‑echoes those Ascension themes we hear from the other
evangelists: It is Jesus himself, risen and glorified, charged with power from the Father, who sends us out; it is Jesus
himself who gives us our mission to baptize, heal, teach, and proclaim the Good News of salvation; it is Jesus himself who
will be with us always, as we continue to be his presence alive in the world.

"LOVE CASTS OUT FEAR"
I have heard it said "A healthy fear is a good thing." Fear
helps us to be cautious. Yet, sometimes it immobilizes and stops
us from Christian action and being fully alive. What we need is the
reassuring presence of Jesus who moves us from fear to trust.
Jesus said, "Love casts out fear." As Christians we move from fear
to trust by the experience of being loved by God.
What are some of the limits we place on the acceptance of God's Love?
A) A false image of God as the one who requires us to be perfect before He will Love us.
B) The experiences of disappointments in life.
C) Considering ourselves unworthy of God's Love because of past sins or present
weaknesses.
D) Forgetting that God's Love is not a reward for my good actions but a totally free
gift of God.
E) Fear of commitment i.e. fear of the sacrifices love might demand.
I would like to share St. Francis De Sales advice on trust in God. "Do not look forward to
what might happen tomorrow; the same everlasting Father who cares for you today will take care of
you tomorrow and every day. Either He will shield you from suffering or He will give you unfailing
strength to bear it. Be at peace then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginations."
Wally Dondero an old friend shared the following cutting, from the Sacramento Bee, it was in
their "Thought for the Day" from February 1950. Wally said his mother saved it because it helped
her realize she was not raising her children alone. Mark 10:21 "Jesus looked upon him and loved
him." It is easy to love those who measure up to our standards, but it is Christlike to love those who
seem to have failed us, disappointed us, betrayed our trust in them. In the account of Jesus'
response to the rich young man who could not find it in his heart to follow Jesus, we read Jesus
looked upon him and loved him. If our children choose not to follow in the path that to us seems
best for them—what can we do? Like Jesus, we can still love them! . . . .More than we know, we
can help others as we look upon them with love and compassion and give them our blessing as they
go on their way. And we can do this as we remember that they do not go alone, God is with them.
God Bless,
Fr. Mike

Giggles:
Angels . . . .Explained By Children
What I don't get about angels is why, when someone is in love, they shoot arrows at them. Ann, 7
Some of the angels are in charge of helping heal sick animals and pets. And if they don't make the
animals get better, they help the child get over it. Vicki, 8
Angels have a lot to do and they keep very busy. If you lose a tooth, an angel comes in through
your window and leaves money under your pillow. Then when it gets cold, angels go south for the
winter. Sean, 7

Y aquí Jesús hace eco a
