como la identidad. Por ejemplo, la musicóloga y profesora Carmen Nieves Luis García, que trabajó durante
muchos años en educación, no enseñaba a los niños a
bailar una isa por el Día de Canarias -con mis respetos a los maestros, que a menudo están saturados de
trabajo- sino que los mandaba a entrevistar directamente a sus abuelos, llevando a las clases grabaciones
de sus testimonios. Lo que después cantaban eran las
canciones, los romances, los juegos que aprendían de
ellos. Y, ya se sabe, lo que se aprende con amor, jamás
se olvida. En el día a día de los niños y jóvenes observamos la ausencia de este tipo de vivencias profundas, y eso, sumado a la estandarización mediática, ha
acabado por provocar un alejamiento de la juventud
hacia nuestra música tradicional. Yo misma lo experimenté a los 18 años.

When will you be bringing out another record?
¿Para cuándo otro disco?
Ahora tengo dos discos en el cajón, casi editados,
pero digamos que, por un punto de autoexigencia,
no han sido publicados. Además, están un poco
abandonados porque la parcela de investigación me
demanda mucho tiempo. Está por salir un libro-CD
sobre las II Jornadas para el Estudio y Difusión de la
Música Tradicional que empezamos a coordinar hace
unos años a propuesta del Instituto de Estudios Hispánicos de Canarias. Dentro de tres meses aproximadamente saldrá otra publicación y también el año
que viene, si no surgen contratiempos, se editará una
serie de cuatrocientas y tantas partituras como parte
de un trabajo de la mencionada Carmen Nieves Luis.
En fin, que por eso te digo que mi carrera no es una
trayectoria de cantante al uso, sino que por el camino
se van cruzando cosas que hay que ir intercalando y a
veces no resulta fácil repartir el tiempo.
I have two records in the drawer at the moment.
The editing is almost done but let’s say because of
a self-demanding point they haven’t been released
yet. Furthermore, they have been forgotten a little
because the field of research takes up so much of
my time. A book-CD is due to come out about the
second Conference for the Study and Dissemination
of Traditional Music which we started to co-ordinate
some years ago after a proposal by the Canarian
Institute for Hispanic Studies. In around 3 month’s
time another publication will come out and next
year, if we don’t suffer any setbacks, a series of over
four hundred musical scores will be published as
part of the work carried out by Carmen Nieves Luis,
who I mentioned earlier. So, that’s why I tell you that
my career is not just that of a singer as things are
constantly crossing my path and which mix with
others and sometimes it’s hard to divide up my time.
