Thoughts from our Pastor
In the Gospel this weekend Jesus says something the Apostles were probably not too excited to hear: “If anyone wishes to come after
me, he must deny himself and take up his cross
daily and follow me.” I don’t think we’re any
more excited to hear this teaching of Jesus
than they were. This is a difficult one.
Jesus went through excruciating suffering in his Passion
and Cross, the most painful and humiliating form of execution then known. He willingly endured this so he could take
the punishment on himself that we all owe for our sins and
rejection of God.
Should we be surprised that Jesus asks us to enter into
the process of salvation by imitating him by taking up our
own crosses after him? If he’s asking us to do this, it has to
be good for us.
Remember this equation: love equals sacrifice. In the
measure that we love, we are also willing to sacrifice or carry
our cross. And, turn it around: in the measure that we willingly sacrifice, we learn to love.
It is true that Jesus suffered and died for our sins; he already paid the ransom we owe so we can enter Heaven. But
our salvation is not then a matter of just sitting back and
letting Jesus do all the work. He insists in the Gospel today
that we actively play a part in our own salvation by taking up
our own crosses as he took up his. The Cross leads to salvation.
This week I encourage all of us to give special attention
to recognizing opportunities to bear crosses, to be willing to
sacrifice ourselves for the good of another or for the glory
of God. And we’re not along in doing this: Jesus never gives
us a command like carrying our crosses without also giving
us the grace to do it.
Convent Air Conditioner Broken
The air conditioning in the convent broke, and the
Sisters are not able to stay in the convent during hot
weather. If anyone would like to donate toward the
cost of new air conditioning for the convent, please
be generous.

Seminarians
Parishioner Mr. Brian Hula, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul and
Catherine Hula, has applied and been accepted by the Most
Rev. George J. Lucas as a seminarian of the Archdiocese of
Omaha. As a parish, we have a duty to offer our prayerful
support and good wishes for him as for our other two seminarians, Mr. Conor Bopp and Mr. Eric Koch. Seminary is a
particularly intense course of study, prayer, formation, and
discernment. Our prayers are greatly needed for our three
seminarians and for all seminarians.
Serra Prayer for Vocations
O God, Who will not the death of a sinner but rather that
he be converted and live, grant we beseech you, through the
intercession of the Blessed Mary ever Virgin, Saint Joseph,
her spouse, Saint Junípero Serra, and all the saints, an increase of laborers for your Church, fellow laborers with
Christ to spend and consume themselves for souls through
the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with
You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.

Parishioner Honored
One of our parishioners, Mrs. Cindy Engelkamp, has been
honored as a 2016 Outstanding Catholic Women of the
Year. As an honoree, Cindy has modeled the Catholic Faith
through her work in the parish and community. She and
Kevin, her husband of 35 years, are the proud parents of
seven children and four grandchildren. Cindy is the president of the St. Peter Conference of the St. Vincent de Paul
Society, which serves the poor in our neighborhood. Under
Cindy’s leadership, the Conference team has grown to a
membership of 40 adults and many youth. Every Saturday
Cindy and Kevin set up for the team to receive clients requesting assistance with rent, utilities and food. Cindy coordinates the Spring and Fall Food Giveaway with Catholic
Charities that takes place at St. Peter Parish, helps with the
Fall Winter Coat Giveaway at the St. Vincent de Paul Store,
Christmas Angel Trees, and Community Meals. Kevin and
Cindy are head organizers of the Annual Thanksgiving Day
Dinner which hosts over 400 guests. Cindy has also served
on the Board of the St. Vincent de Paul Store. Since 2013,
Cindy and Kevin have been Parish Ambassadors for Dynamic Catholic, which provides resources on evangelization
to parishes around the world. In 2015, Cindy sponsored her
78-year-old mother into the Catholic Church. Cindy homeschools their children through the 8th grade and volunteers
in the high schools the children attend. She is a parent volunteer for Show Choir at Bellevue West. She also cares for
her grandchild during the week. Along with her husband,
Kevin, Cindy has served her parish as a catechist for First
Holy Communion, the Archdiocesan Ignite the Faith Campaign and has helped organize the EPS baby bottle campaign. Congratulations, Cindy. We are blessed that you allow God’s brilliant grace to shine through you to touch the
lives of so many others.

Una de nuestras feligresas, la señora Cindy Engelkamp, ha
sido honrada como una de las mujeres católicas excepcionales del año 2016. Cindy ha modelada la Fe Católica a través

Registrations for catechism classes for
children and homeschool sacramental
preparation are now available in the
catechism office (room 103 in the
school) on Wednesdays from 5:30 pm7:00 pm, and Saturdays from 10:30 am12:00 noon. Also, registrations are
available in O’Brien Hall after the
Masses one weekend per month: June
18-19, July 16-17 and August 13-14.

June 19-24: Totus Tuus
Catholic Summer Camp
for children and youth
at St. Peter Church. Includes Mass at 11:15 am
(on Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday), Confessions, prayer and enthusiastic catechesis. There will be a
parish potluck meal with the Totus
Tuus team on Tuesday, June 21 from
5:30-7:00 pm in McMahon Hall. Please
bring food to share. The daytime program for children entering grades 1-6
will be held Monday through Friday,
9:00 am-2:30 pm; please bring a sack
lunch. The evening program for junior
and senior high age youth will be Sunday through Thursday 7:00-9:00 pm.
Cost for the daytime program is $25
for one child, or $50 for a family. (No
child will be turned away if unable to
pay the fee.) The evening program for
teens is free. Registration is available

the camp while space is available. Adult
volunteers are needed for the daytime
program, and volunteers are needed to
provide a meal for the Totus Tuus

Readers and Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion (EMHC)
If you are interested in becoming a Reader
at Mass or an EMHC to bring Holy Communion to the elderly and homebound
members of our parish, please contact the
parish office by July 8, 2016. Archdiocesan
training in English will be held in August.
Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays
“Could you not watch one hour with Me?”
Eucharistic Adoration is held on Fridays
from 8:30 am-6:00 pm. (Please use the west
door of the church with the wheelchair
ramp.) We are in need of more Adorers to
spend an hour with Our Lord Jesus. Please
contact the parish office to sign up for an
hour with Jesus.
Sacred Heart of Jesus Enthronement
If you desire to have an Enthronement of
the Sacred Heart of Jesus as King of your
heart and home, please contact the parish
office. The priests are available to visit your
home for the Enthronement ceremony.
Youth Conference
Three members of St. Peter Parish are organizing a youth conference July 29-31 in
Sioux City, IA. Speakers include Fr. John
Bamman, Fr. Michael Voithofer, Fr. Brent
Lingle and Fr. Shane Deman. This youth
conference will offer beautiful liturgies,
engaging speakers and music, break-out
sessions for youth and for adults, and plenty of time for prayer and recreation. The
cost is $150 for the conference for youth

Camp Fun & Faith for Girls
Camp Fun & Faith for Girls is a Catholic
camp held at the Pro Sanctity Retreat Center in Elkhorn and run by the Apostolic

St. Peter SVdP Food Pantry
St. Peter St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry
currently needs toothbrushes, canned or
dried fruit, and soup. Please leave donations in the containers near the Church
entrances or in the parish office. All donations are gratefully appreciated!
Peter’s Pence Collection
On June 25-26 we will take up a second
collection for Peter’s Pence to support the
worldwide charitable activities of the Holy
Father, Pope Francis.
St. Peter St. Vincent de Paul Society is
partnering with the St. Vincent de Paul
Thrift Store, 2101 Leavenworth St
St. Peter SVdP will receive 10% of the
stores sales for our Conference to help the
poor, in return we will provide volunteers
to help sort, display and change tags in the
store. This would be a perfect family project. What better way to show your kids
how to hang up their clothes! Seriously, the
stores desperately need our help and we
need the store to stay open, so we can send
our clients in the neighborhood to get furniture and clothes. Let me know, when you
and or your family can give a couple of
hours a week or month to serve the poor.

The SVdP Thrift Stores
The SVdP stores can use your donations,
call 402-341-4942 for pick up or better yet
drop off your donations and then shop. Or
drop off donations in the blue SVdP bins
in O'Brien Hall or McMahon Hall. If you
like to shop at thrift stores, please support
the SVdP Store at 2101 Leavenworth St.
St. Peter SVdP will directly benefit from it.
St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store Jobs
SVdP Thrift Store is looking to hire 2-3
part-time men to work on the trucks and
warehouse. Age 18 years or older. Application are at the rectory, from Cindy or Kevin Engelkamp or at the store. Be sure to

para la Entronización. La Entronización
