REFLECTION BY SEMINARIAN
BOB ANGEL
Friends in Christ,
Six months away from honoring the birth of Christ, this
weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Na vity of
Saint John the Bap st. It’s a mouthful, but it’s also a celebra on “pregnant” with meaning (see what I did there).
God sends his prophet (and later his Son) through the simple and yet miraculous gi of childbirth. No lightning, no fireworks, no giant
figh ng robots. God works through nature and indeed through the goodness
of our bodies. This week’s readings a est to this fact.
I praise you, for I am wonderfully made. (Psalm 139). Chris anity has go en a
bad rap when it comes to our understanding of the body. Yet when we encounter the Scriptures and the authen c teachings of the Church, the truly
Catholic perspec ve understands that the human person is a unique hybrid of
soul and body, and the whole person suffers when one of these two is maltreated. We were created as good (see Genesis), and despite the entrance of
sin into the world, we are s ll good in the depths of our being. Our body is the
visible expression of our personal mystery. In every Mass we profess to believe
in the resurrecƟon of the body—that includes our bodies! What we do to our
bodies ma ers, in this life and the next.
Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb.
An inalienable dignity belongs to every human being from the moment of his or
her concep on. God calls us into existence out of love and our bodies reveal
that we are designed for a self-giving love. You are a gi . So am I. It’s the
deepest truth of our iden ty. It’s also the central theme of John Paul II’s decisive catechesis on human personhood as a reflec on of Trinitarian love, popularly known as the Theology of the Body. I’ll be wri ng more about that next
week, so stay tuned!
I will be leaving for Pennsylvania this weekend to a end a 6-day retreat held by
the Theology of the Body Ins tute. I’ve been blessed to have a ended two of
these courses already, and they have proven to be extremely frui ul ground for
spiritual renewal and intellectual understanding of our late Pope’s teachings.
Prayers will be appreciated, if you have any to spare! Know that you all will be
in mine. May the humility of John the Bap st (and the strength of his mighty
beard) inspire us to put Christ’s message of love into our daily ac ons.
Your friendly neighborhood seminarian,
-Bob Angel
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
THIS WEEKEND!
Today we support the Hoy Father in his charitable works. The Peter’s Pence Collec on is taken up worldwide to support the most disadvantaged: vic m of war,
oppression, and natural disasters and others in need of emergency assistance.
Pope Benedict XVI has said, “It is necessary above all that every person be moƟvated by the authenƟc spirit of peace” (Homily, January 1, 2011). Cast the peace
of Christ upon the world—please be generous in today’s collec on.

HAPPILY
MARRIED COUPLES
What have you done for your marriage today? Successful marriages
don’t work on automa c pilot – at
least not for long. Like a garden,
they require constant a en on:
watering, fer lizing, watering, and
weeding. Healthy marriages, like
gardens, don’t die suddenly. More
o en they fade away from a gradual lack of a en veness, le ng
things slide, and taking each other
for granted. Join us for a Worldwide Marriage Encounter and discover God’s plan for joy, romance
and passion in your marriage. The
next WorldWide Marriage Encounter weekend in this diocese is July
13-15th at the Holiday Inn Express
in New Tampa.

REFLEXIÓN DEL SEMINARISTA
BOB ANGEL
He sido bendecido ya que he asis do otras
nuestras acciones diarias.
Paz en Cristo,
Padre Tom J. Anastasia, Párroco
