A MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR MARC TRUDEAU

T
n and around Church circles, the phrase “New Evangelization” is
often discussed. I have used it in these bulletin articles from time
to time. Pope John Paul II spoke of it extensively, Benedict XVI promoted it and now Pope Francis is also defining and encouraging its
discussion. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has recently opened a
new office for the New Evangelization. But with all of this recent interest in it, we continue to be a little uncertain about what it is; how
we do it and where do we go with it.
he essence of the New Evangelization is
in this Sunday’s Gospel. People have
heard Jesus’ teaching. They have seen his
miracles and watched his effect on the lives of
his followers. What is the next step? Jesus
says to them, “Follow me.” Take the next
step. The New Evangelization is the deepening of our relationship with Jesus. For those
of us who have heard his Word and experienced his presence in the Sacraments and
who might feel that we are already evangelized, there is always another step in deepening our relationship with him. The Summer
months are the perfect time for doing this. As
our schedules often change during these
months with the end of school, the longer
days and change in weather, we can look at
how we might change our spiritual journey.
Find some spiritual reading to augment your
usual summer reading. (St. Margaret Mary
Spiritual Book Club has suggestions for you.)
Spend some quiet time every day. Attend a
daily Mass or visit the church or some other
place that you experience as “holy ground”.
Take an extra walk around the block or at the
beach or park. Reflect on God’s presence here
and now in your life. Be especially mindful of
even the most ordinary activities. Brushing
one’s teeth, grocery shopping, waiting at the
bank, everything we do can be a response to
Jesus’ invitation in today’s Gospel. Reflect on
God’s presence in the world and people
around you. Evangelization never gets old.
Everywhere we go, every experience we have
is God’s word coming to us, an invitation to
follow.

at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo on July 1st.

entro y alrededor de los círculos de la iglesia, la expresión “Nueva Evangelización” a menudo es discutida. La he usado de vez en cuando en los artículos del boletín. El papa Juan pablo II habló extensamente de ello, Benedicto XVI la promovió y ahora el Papa Francisco lo define
y fomenta el debate. La Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles recientemente ha abierto una nueva oficina para la Nueva Evangelización. Pero con todo esto el interés reciente en el que, seguimos teniendo un poco de incertidumbre sobre lo que es, como lo hacemos y cómo vamos hacia ella.
L
a esencia de la Nueva Evangelización
esta en el evangelio de este domingo. La
gente ha oído la enseñanza de Jesús. Han visto sus milagros y observado su efecto en las
vidas de sus seguidores. ¿Cuál es el próximo
paso? Jesús les dice, “Síganme.” Tome el segundo paso. La Nueva Evangelización es la
profundización de nuestra relación con Jesús.
Para aquellos de nosotros que hemos escuchada su Palabra y experimentado su presencia en los sacramentos y que podríamos sentir que ya estamos evangelizados, siempre
hay otro paso en la profundización de nuestra
relación con él. Los meses del verano es el
tiempo perfecto para hacer esto. A menudo
que nuestros horarios cambian durante estos
meses, con el final de la escuela, los días largos y el cambio de temperatura, podemos ver
cómo podríamos cambiar nuestra jornada espiritual. Encontrar alguna lectura espiritual
para aumentar su lectura habitual de verano.

Rev. Paul O’Donnell
Fr. Paul will have his
first Mass at our parish
on Sunday, August 4th.
There will be a welcome
reception for him on Sunday August 11th in Hegarty
Hall.
Fr. Paul grew up in Illinois and New Jersey before moving out west
where in 1978 he received
a Bachelors degree in Fine Art from the California Institute of the Arts. After several
years working in the public sector, he joined
the Comboni Missionaries in 1985 and was
ordained to the priesthood in 1993. Soon after he began mission assignments in the Phillipines, Mexico and Los Angeles. He then
spent three years as chaplain for the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart in Alhambra, CA. After beginning his incardination into the Los Angeles Archdiocese, he
spent three years as an Associate Pastor at
San Antonio de Padua and Asuncion parishes
in Boyle Heights.
He is presently the pastor of St. Mary of
the Assumption Church in Santa Maria, CA,
which is in the Northern reaches of the Los
Angeles Archdiocese where he’s been since
2012.

SAN PEDRO Y SAN PABLO

Ayer fue la fiesta de dos hombres muy famosos
en la historia cristiana. Van juntos como nombre y apellido: Pedro y Pablo. Solemos decir
como dos pilares del edificio de la iglesia.
La herencia de Pedro y Pablo.
Pedro había sido un rudo pescador. Creció en
el mar entre vientos y tempestades. El dolor le
enseñó a ser violento y tenaz. No tenía la educación que dan los libros, pero como era tenaz
en la fe, el Señor lo escogió como jefe de la
iglesia, como piedra y fundamento. El miedo lo
hizo negar al Maestro el Viernes Santo. Pero
luego lloró su debilidad y nunca lo volvió a negar. Los enemigos lo crucificaron en Roma.
Pablo no era pescador, sino un fariseo de mucha educación que conocía bien la Biblia y era
ciudadano romano. Cuando oyó de Jesús de
Nazaret, se declaró enemigo de él y pidió licencia a las autoridades para llevar a los cristianos
a la cárcel. Pensaba que Jesús estaba en contra
de su religión judía tradicional. Un día, Dios le
abrió los ojos a la fuerza y le gritó: ¿Por qué me
persigues? Pablo entonces vio claro, oyó la voz
de Dios y cambió. La misma vehemencia que
había empleado contra Jesús, la empleó para
hacerse el más valiente propagador del evangelio. Pedro y Pablo se conocieron: tenían el
afán de buscar lo mejor para la iglesia primitiva que comenzó a crearse una tensión entre
ellos. Tenían distintas opiniones. Pero había
en ellos algo mucho más fuerte que las diferencias de opinión: el amor a la iglesia. Y nos dejaron un hermoso ejemplo.
Conflictos en la iglesia moderna.
La iglesia de hoy tiene también conflictos internos. En los últimos años, a partir del Concilio Vaticano Segundo, han traído luz, pero
también confusión. Muchos consideran aún
equivocado el que celebremos la misa en cualquier otro idioma y no en latín. Muchos consideran peligrosa la creciente participación del
seglar, hombre o mujer, en las actividades de
la iglesia. Algunos se adhieren a sectas religiosas, otros dejan de creer, otros no saben qué
hacer. Pero hay muchos que ven esta situación
de crisis como una señal de vitalidad y de crecimiento. Y se alegran del desafío que el tiempo actual significa para el cristiano: hoy podemos definirnos en la fe. Dentro de la diversi-
dad de creencias, podemos sentirnos libres para aceptar maduramente nuestra fe cristiana.
En el misal encontré algo importante para reafirmar nuestra fe y es lo siguiente:
“Tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra
edificaré mi iglesia”
Esto se lo dijo Jesús a Simón Pedro, hijo de
Juan.
No se lo dijo a Charles Taze Russell, fundador
de los Testigos de Jehová.
Ni a José Smith, fundador de los Mormones.
Ni a David Beng, fundador de los Niños de
Dios (hoy la Familia).
Ni a Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, fundador de
la iglesia de la Cienciología (Que suele disfrazarse de Dianética).
Ni al coreano Sun Myung Moon, fundador de
la iglesia de la unificación.
Ni a Caitanya Mahaprabu, fundador de la iglesia de los Hare Krishna.
Ni a Maharaj Ji, fundador de la Misión de la
Luz Divina.
Ni al Hermano Aarón, fundador de la Luz del
Mundo.
Y para acabar pronto, ni a ninguno de los innumerables fundadores de sectas o grupos religiosos que se cobijan bajo el nombre de New
Age o Nueva era.
Por consiguiente, la verdadera iglesia de Cristo, la que tiene las llaves del Reino de los Cielos y contra la cual no prevalecerá el poder del
infierno, es la que está fundada en Pedro y en
sus sucesores, los papas. A ellos y sólo a ellos
fue a quienes Jesús les dijo antes de subir al
cielo: “Y sepan que yo estoy con ustedes y todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo”
Reflexión
Que el ejemplo luminoso de San Pedro
y San Pablo nos ayude a ahondar la fe
y el deseo de mantener la unidad de
nuestra familia cristiana. En la diferencia de personas, razas, de criterios,
tenemos una misma esperanza y un
mismo Dios y padre.

Padre Paul tendrá su primera Misa en nuestra parroquia el domingo, 4 de
Agosto. Habrá una recepción de bienvenida para él
el domingo 11 de agosto en
Hegarty Hall.
Padre Paul creció en Illinois y Nueva Jersey, antes
de mudarse al oeste, donde
en 1978 recibió una licenciatura en Bellas Artes en
el Instituto de Artes de California. Después de
varios años de trabajo en el sector público, se
unió a los Misioneros Combonianos en 1985 y
fue ordenado sacerdote en 1993. Poco después
comenzó a asignaciones de misión en las Filipinas, México y Los Angeles. A continuación,
pasó tres años como capellán de las Hermanas
Carmelitas del Sagrado Corazón en Alhambra,
CA. Después de comenzar su incardinación en
la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles, pasó tres años
como Pastor Asociado en San Antonio de Padua y las parroquias Asunción en Boyle
Heights.
Actualmente es párroco de Santa María de la
Asunción Iglesia de Santa Maria, CA, que está
