Learn about the status of the East Bay’s water resources,

can help you reduce water consumption. Find out how

Arts Council of San Leandro
Support art in San Leandro! Your $15 senior/$24 individual membership in Arts Council of San Leandro will help this nonprofit volunteer group promote visual and performing arts in San Leandro.
ACSL events have included variety shows, jazz music, gallery exhibits at the museum and library, scholarships for art students, and
artist demonstrations in elementary schools. If you would like to
become a member, would like to be one of the paid artists who
participate in the school program, or would like to find out about

Casa Peralta Docents
Age 18Y & Up
We need your help with this San Leandro historic treasure! Free
training and handbook will prepare you to act as a guide for visitors
to this Historic House Museum. Learn about Rancho San Antonio
and the proud Peraltas whose vast cattle ranch once spread over

San Leandro Museum
Age 18Y & UP
Be a part of the exciting San Leandro Museum! You do not need to
know San Leandro history for most positions. The ideal volunteer is
interested in history, enthusiastic, enjoys working with people, and
can commit to at least one four-hour shift each month. Greeters staff
the reception desk, School Tour Assistants help with our exciting
hands-on living history school tours, Docents act as guides to the
museum, and Exhibit Cleaners help keep the displays sparkling.

Human Services
Ongoing - Age 14Y & Up
There are many community-based organizations that serve San
Leandro residents and could use your volunteer help. Would you
like to volunteer at a food bank or help persons with Alzheimer’s
or youth with disabilities? The Recreation and Human Services
Department can connect you with organizations that can use

Senior Services
Ongoing - Age 18Y & Up
Make a difference by sharing your experience, expertise and time!
Teach, take part in special projects and events, perform clerical
and administrative duties, meet and greet visitors, lead tours, help
with attendance check-in for classes and workshops; help prepare
and serve food, set-up and tear down. Senior programs and
activities are held at the Marina Community Center and Bancroft

Community Library
Age 14Y & Up
The beautiful Main Library could use your help! Adults may
volunteer in the Friends of the Library Bookstore and/or Gift Shop.
Volunteers also assist in the children’s department, shelving books,
and a variety of other library tasks. You should be in good physical
shape and enjoy working with the public. For adult volunteer

Friends of the Library Bookstore or Gift Shop, contact Nancy Fong,
(510) 577-3947. Adult and teen volunteers are also welcome at the

Project Literacy
Project Literacy provides free tutoring and support for adults who
want to improve reading and writing skills. Be a tutor! Meet with
your student for only 2 hours a week. Tutor training and materials

Internet Volunteers
Age 18Y & Up
The library is recruiting volunteers with experience using the World
Wide Web to demonstrate Internet basics to patrons.

City Hall Office Volunteers
Ongoing – Age 18Y & Up
Provide supplemental support for various departments at City Hall.
Volunteers should enjoy working in a busy office environment.
Routine tasks include preparing mailings, answering telephones,
copying materials and other miscellaneous jobs. City Hall
volunteers can also work at the information kiosk. For information,

What is Project Literacy?
Project Literacy provides free tutoring and support for
English speaking adults who want to improve reading and
writing skills. Trained volunteers are available as tutors
for adults age 16 and older who have difficulty with basic
skills. Project Literacy welcomes the family by providing
monthly story times and free children’s book distribution
at the main library. Project Literacy has a wonderful
community outreach program that provides literacy
services and resources to parents and their children ages
0-4 years.
How can you help?
Be a tutor! Meet with your student for only 2 hours a week
and you will make a valuable difference in their life. Lead
a weekly small group session, call now to find out
how! Receive free training materials, everlasting support
and Thank You’s from our hearts!

Paratransit Services
Youth Advisory Commission
Need a Ride? Check Out the San Leandro
FLEX Shuttle Service
Do you have an opinion about City policies that affect teens? Do
you want to get involved and make a difference? Apply to become
a member of the Youth Advisory Commission and make teen life in
San Leandro a better one! Applicants must be residents of the City
of San Leandro and currently enrolled in 9th through 12th grades.

This transportation service is for San Leandro seniors and for people
with disabilities (18+). The FLEX Shuttle provides two types of
service: Shuttle and Curb-to-Curb. Out-of-town trips within Alameda
County for medical purposes only are also available for a fee. For
more information on these services, please turn to the 50+ Program
Section for a complete description and application information.
East Bay Paratransit
Residents with a disability may also be eligible for paratransit services
through East Bay Paratransit, a service that is provided by AC Transit
and BART. East Bay Paratransit provides transportation throughout

First-Time Homebuyer Program
The City’s First-Time Homebuyer Program for low- and moderateincome borrowers offers down payment - closing cost assistance: a low
interest, 20-year loan, deferred the first 5 years • Borrow up to $30,000

Housing Rehabilitation
Program
The City offers grants and loans to low-income owner occupants who
reside within the incorporated areas. There are six grants available: •
Minor Home Repair • Mobile Home Repair • Accessibility • Exterior
Clean Up • Exterior Paint • Seismic Strengthening.
Need more than a grant? There is a low interest, deferred loan option.
Borrow up to $35,000.

Local employers are needed for high school students – after school,
weekends, internships and summer jobs. Employers with job

Recreation Employment
Opportunities
Do you want to have fun while you work? Do you like a fastpaced, creative environment? The San Leandro Recreation and
Human Services Department has a wide range of employment
opportunities year-round. Great jobs are available working with
kids in Youth Sports, Youth/Teen Adventures and Aquatic programs.
Lifeguards, sixteen years or older, with either a Lifeguard or WSI
certificate need look no further for the perfect job. Some positions
working with children require applicants to be 18 years or older.
Duties and required skills vary by position. Competitive salaries,
most starting above $9 an hour, are offered based on experience
and qualifications.
