The Eagle’s Quill PTA Newsletter SANTIAGO ELEMENTARY September 2010 September 2010 * Volume 16 * Issue 1 Michelle Marchand, PTA President Andrea Norman, Ed. D., Principal Debbie Cain, Quill Editor Saddleback Council PTA 4th District PTA CA State PTA Santiago Elementary PTA 24982 Rivendell Drive Lake Forest, CA 92630 http://www.santiagopta.com President’s Message: Dear Santiago Families, Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! Whether this is your first year, or you are a returning member of the Santiago family, I would like to extend an invitation to join the Santiago PTA. The Santiago PTA is here to represent your children and your families. Our main goal is to provide the best possible school year for our students, through a variety of programs and activities. In this time of budget crisis and financial insecurity, the Santiago PTA is a way we parents can participate in and help shape our students' school experience. We are an inclusive, welcoming group – and we would love to have your participation! Our meetings are held generally on the first Thursday of the month in the MPR at 6:30pm. Here you will receive first hand information on everything going on at your child’s school. If you are a member of the PTA, you will be eligible to vote at the meeting on issues that directly affect your child’s school experience. Our meetings are an opportunity to spend time with other Santiago parents, discuss issues, and ultimately to make decisions about the activities of the PTA. Our PTA theme for this school year is Leading by Example. Whether we realize it or not, everything we do affects and influences those around us. Let’s make a conscious effort to be a positive example to our families, our school and our community. I would love to hear from you about what is important to you, your comments and concerns, and any ideas you may have. You can contact me at [email protected] I look forward to an exciting school year! The California Teachers Association and the California State PTA have joined forces to offer some tips for you that will give your children the best opportunity to succeed in school. 1. Just Ask. Ask your children what they studied in class today — what they liked and what they learned. Asking questions shows that school is important. 2. Quiet Study. Choose a place for home study and make sure the room is quiet during that time. Creating a quiet place goes a long way toward helping your children learn. 3. Regular Schedule. Set up a certain time of day that is dedicated to homework. Follow up with your children to be sure their homework is complete and turned in on time. 4. Learn Together. If you want your children to read their assignments, give yourself an assignment, too. When it’s time for them to do homework, take a break and spend a few minutes reading a book, magazine or newspaper. 5. Learn Everywhere. Increase your children’s interest in homework by connecting school to everyday life. For instance, your children can learn fractions and measurements while you prepare favorite foods together. 6. Meet Their Teachers. Meet with your children’s teachers to find out what they are learning and discuss their progress in school. 7. Praise Helps. Praise your children for successfully completing homework. Nothing encourages children more than praise from their parents.
