President`s Message - Americas United Bank
Quarterly Volume 1, Number 2 President’s Message A re we having fun yet? I am happy to report that amidst these very challenging times, AUB continues to grow in a safe and sound manner. We’re taking advantage of market opportunities and investing our increasing deposit base and excess capital by fulfilling the borrowing needs of small to mid-sized businesses and professionals in our community. AUB continues to offer the highest commitment to fulfilling the banking needs of clients with emphasis remaining on the needs of the Hispanic business and professional communities. Having only been opened 2½ years, AUB has the distinction of having become the largest Hispanic-owned Bank based in the state of California. Obviously, we are quite proud of this accomplishment. Although we are seeing some signs of stabilization, the economy is still quite fragile and uncertainty persists. In today’s climate, AUB has a very strong capital base and a conservative balance sheet, which yields many opportunities to increase market share. It’s no accident that AUB has avoided the credit issues plaguing many banks today. I’d like to again thank our customers and shareholders for your support, and commend our staff for delivering the ultimate banking experience for our customers. In fact, driven by almost $8 million in new loans funded in June, 2009 (a monthly record for the Bank), our loan portfolio surpassed the $100 million milestone, growing to $104.3 million. Total assets as of June 30, 2009 stand at almost $120 million, also a record for the Bank. With our commitment to delivering “Banking as it should be”, we keep attracting quality customers and are happy to provide a multitude of high quality products and services to our highly diverse and growing client base. For those of you receiving this newsletter who are not connected to AUB, we would love to earn your business, and show you “Banking as it should be”! How? Ask the establishment’s Maître d’ or Headwaiter if you might spend a few minutes observing the working kitchen. Then focus your attention on how the Chef de Cuisine, the Sous-Chef, the Expediter, and station chefs energetically assist each other in preparing amazing meals for guests. In five minutes or less, you’ll see the magic of personal touches that collectively bring signature dishes to the table. You also will witness heightened sensitivity to what customers want. When chefs sweat the details, their customers become fans who encourage their friends to seek out the “must dine” experience. Loyal customers are a powerful ally — especially since studies consistently show that satisfied customers tell an average of five people about businesses they like. Loyal customers are a powerful ally — especially since studies consistently show that satisfied customers tell an average of five people about businesses they like. Want more referrals? Transform your satisfied customers into fans or advocates. Create and promote a referral program with incentives that reward goodwill and keep customers talking about your business. Offer discounts on future purchases. Pay commissions on referrals that lead to sales. Orchestrate referral drives for sought-after prizes annually, quarterly or monthly. Surprise your top customers with thank-you gifts, and keep nurturing your loyalty program by staying focused on what motivates the clients you want to keep. Yes, a loyalty program often is a key ingredient in a successful marketing plan. Relevant messages are increasingly important to current clients and to 2 prospective customers. No wonder customer-relationship management platforms are increasingly being linked to variable data-printing solutions to deliver highly personalized printed and electronic materials to clients hungry for one-on-one attention. Pick any industry. You likely will find too many companies chasing too few customers. As they vie for attention, often leveraging multi-channel promotions involving broadcast, print, outdoor and electronic media, they collectively make it harder for new customers to make buying decisions. In fact, recent studies show that instead of the long-standing average of receiving seven messages for a purchasing decision, customers now need as many as 20 messages to make a buying decision. There’s no point in trying to shout louder, when consumers already are being confused by a barrage of promotion. Remember how chefs finetune recipes and food presentations so the look, the smell, the touch, the sound and the taste of every meal delight guests? Their trick is keenly observing client reactions to meals and then consistently refining offerings until they universally are well-received. Message relevance is the key to unlocking more sales for almost every business, and it comes from knowing more about customer preferences, faster. Start by learning what benefits are most important to the 20 percent of customers who likely represent 80 percent of your annual business income. Then consistently communicate how your product delivers those benefits to increase sales among your best customers and to attract new clients who exhibit the same preferences as your best customers. And remember that, while traditional market-research methods including surveys and focus groups are valu- able, much can be learned by simply observing the actions of consumers in the marketplace. Many firms also host customer panels to give top clients a made-to-order opportunity to share feedback. By focusing on the “What’s in it for me?” you can position your business as the best possible choice for exactly what a group of customers needs. Then you can pick and choose from a variety of effective tactics to reach this audience repeatedly. Direct mail is booming for good reason. It allows businesses to pinpoint prospects to generate sales, drive foot traffic, build recognition or brand awareness, reward top customers, and warm up customers for subsequent sales calls. Permission-based E-mail also can help further customer relationships. Since clients opt-in to receive updates and special notices from the business, they generally are more receptive to the electronic messaging when it arrives. Plus, effective Web offerings often strike positive chords with clients as they download substantial on-line product information; and enjoy thoughtful posts to blogs and socialnetworking sites, including Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. q AUB Quarterly • www.aubank.com •Volume 1, Number 2 Americas United Bank (OTC BB: AUNB) put their money where their mouth is and demonstrated that it’s open for business and conducting meaningful transactions by assisting Downey Valero with the financing of a complete construction renovation. Team Building Recent Testimonial M any leaders of start-up ventures and mature businesses carve out time from their hectic schedules to watch team sporting events. Like many of their employees, they are among the tens of millions seeing the weekly magic of college and professional basketball, football, baseball, and hockey. They are live or television spectators, hungry for news about their favorite teams. Ever wonder why sports where individual performance is prized attract much smaller live and television audiences? Teamwork could be the difference. Could the best NASCAR driver take the checkered flag without an excellent crew? Does a football running back become world-class without a line of effective blockers? Do pitchers, hitters or fielders win baseball games? How good can the outside or inside game in basketball be without every player contributing to effective ball-handling? How often do hockey scores come when players are in the penalty box? Time and again, group sports offer an important reminder. The TEAM (Together, Everyone Achieves More) is greater than any one player. This truism should be embraced by business owners and managers because market advantage can be achieved by nurturing an environment where employees work hard, work smart and work together. “I know many of the other founders and board members of Americas United Bank personally. I have watched several of their businesses rise from the garage to 50,000 square foot warehouses and seen their product on the shelves of major retail accounts. These are bootstrap people who have built their businesses from the ground up. I am proud not only of the friendship but of the success of my peers. The valuable experience and input of these businesses has gone into creating my bank, Americas United Bank (AUB). AUB’s founders understand from first-hand experience that locally-owned banks with local decision-making power are critical to business growth. There is no greater testimonial than to be doing business with people you respect.” Aner Iglesias Owner Here are some team-building techniques from top athletic coaches that readily could be applied to the workplace. So, seek out one-on-one opportunities to ask employees if they have questions about their work or their priorities. In meetings, since studies show people mostly talk about knowledge they all share, be sure to ask each person to tell the group something others might not know. Establish rules of engagement. As soon as every team member understands and takes ownership of the team goal, it is vital to clearly define each team member’s role in and responsibilities to the group.
