orrelavega vuelve a hacer gala de su vocación
internacional y su afición al deporte acogiendo la
celebración de la fase clasificatoria de la Copa
Davis Junior, un evento que, sin duda, despierta
el interés de muchos aficionados de Cantabria y
de fuera de nuestras fronteras.
El Círculo de Recreo de Torrelavega se convierte
en organizador y anfitrión de una competición,
cuya expectación e interés representa el mejor de
los vehículos de promoción para la ciudad y un
escaparate idóneo para la proyección e imagen
de Cantabria como sede de grandes eventos
deportivos.
A la importancia de esa fase clasificatoria, en la
que participan, además de España, las selecciones
de Bielorrusia, Chipre, Portugal, Turquía, Gran
Bretaña, Suecia y Ucrania, se suma el poder de
convocatoria que una actividad como el tenis
tiene a nivel mediático y deportivo.
Esta es una gran oportunidad para volver a disfrutar de una competición de alto nivel y empezar a
conocer a muchos de los que más adelante serán las grandes figuras del tenis mundial.
Mi más sincera enhorabuena al Círculo de Recreo por demostrar, una vez más, su inquietud y entrega
a la hora de trabajar y contribuir a que Torrelavega pueda presumir de ser una ciudad de referencia,
emprendedora, sociable y dinámica en todos los ámbitos, especialmente en lo deportivo.
La Consejería de Cultura, Turismo y Deporte del Gobierno de Cantabria se suma a esta iniciativa,
sabedora de que la celebración de la Copa Davis Junior representa un hito histórico para la historia
deportiva de Torrelavega y de la región.

of the Junior Davis Cup, an event that undoubtedly aroused the interest of many fans of Cantabria and outside our
borders.
Torrelavega’s Circle Leisure becomes organizer and host of a competition, whose excitement and interest represents
the best of promotional vehicles for the city and an ideal showcase for the projection and image of Cantabria to
host major sporting events.
The importance of this qualifying round, involving in addition to Spain, selections from Belarus, Cyprus, Portugal,
Turkey, Great Britain, Sweden and Ukraine, joined the power of meeting with success that tennis have at media and
sport level.
This is a great opportunity to return to enjoy a high-level competition and begin to meet many of which later, will be
the great figures of world tennis.
My sincerely congratulations to the Circle Leisure by demonstrating once again its concern and dedication to work
and contribute to Torrelavega can boast of being a city of reference, enterprising, sociable and dynamic in all fields,
especially in the sport.

El
Círculo de Recreo de Torrelavega es una
institución que se acerca a su 150 aniversario con
una buena salud envidiable, y pletórico de nuevos
proyectos. Tanto es así que se adentra en el verano
de 2008 afrontando un reto tan apasionante
como exigente: convertirse en una de las sedes
para la celebración de la fase clasificatoria de
la Copa Davis Junior, conocida como la Copa
Borotra, que acercara hasta nuestra ciudad a los
jóvenes talentos del tenis internacional llamados
a ser el futuro relevo de los actuales campeones,
como Nadal, Federer o Djukovic.
Los competidores de ocho selecciones nacionales
lucharán, entre el 30 de julio y el 1 de agosto, para
obtener el pase a la fase final que se disputará
dos días después en Francia. Para Torrelavega
y Cantabria supone un grato acontecimiento el
poder acoger a los jugadores, familiares, técnicos
y personal organizativo del evento, y ofrecerles
nuestra hospitalidad, junto con los innumerables
atractivos de nuestra tierra.
Deseo felicitar al Círculo de Recreo por su capacidad y empeño en atraer y organizar este evento, que
será un gran éxito sin duda. Mi enhorabuena también para todos los jóvenes tenistas, y deportistas
en general, que nos regalan su talento y esfuerzo, y la más cordial bienvenida, en nombre de esta

orrelavega’s Circle Leisure is an institution that is approaching its 150 anniversary with an enviable good health,
and full of new projects. So much so that it enters into the summer of 2008 to face a challenge as exciting as
demanding: become one of the venues for holding the qualifying phase of the Junior Davis Cup, known as Borotra
Cup, which brings up our city young talents of international tennis called to take over from the current champions,
like Nadal, Federer or Djukovic.
Competitors from eight teams will fight, between July 30 and August 1, for permission to pass the final phase which
will be played two days later in France. For Torrelavega and Cantabria represents a gratifying event to receive the
players, family, organizational and technical personnel of the event and offer our hospitality, among the countless
attractions of our land.
I wish to congratulate the Circle Leisure for its ability and commitment to attracting and organizing this event, which
will be undoubtedly a great success. My congratulations also to all young tennis players and athletes in general,
they give us their talent and effort, and the warmest welcome on behalf of this dynamic and welcoming city for all

directiva que me honra presidir, después de la
experiencia adquirida durante estos últimos años
en la organización de Torneos de Tenis, da un
salto cualitativo en la preparación deportiva.
Nuestra responsabilidad para con el tenis nos ha
animado a organizar éste importantísimo Torneo
Internacional.
Abrimos nuestras puertas, no sólo a las gentes de
Torrelavega y Cantabria, sino también a muchos
amigos Europeos. Todo ello es posible gracias
a la valiosa colaboración de muchas personas,
empresas e Instituciones, que veréis reflejadas en

Tenis quiero enviar un saludo a todos los
torrelaveguenses y felicitarles por la celebración de
la fase clasificatoria del Campeonato de Europa
de Selecciones Nacionales Cadetes Masculinas,
la Copa Borotra.
Animo a todos los amantes del deporte de la
raqueta a acudir al Círculo de Recreo Torrelavega
del 30 de julio al 1 de agosto, porque sin duda,
disfrutarán del buen hacer tenístico de estos
chavales que, se sitúan en el trampolín que separa
la afición del profesionalismo.
En el Círculo de Recreo se darán cita las
principales selecciones europeas, entre ellas la
española. Serán 32 jugadores representando a 8
países llenos de ilusión y ganas de dar lo mejor
de sí mismos.
Para estos jóvenes tenistas cadetes será una
experiencia inolvidable de convivencia, compañerismo y deporte.
Para este gran club nacido hace casi 150 años, será un acontecimiento memorable y estoy seguro de
que exitoso, gracias al esfuerzo y la ilusión de todos los organizadores.

on holding the qualifying phase of the European Championship Selections National Cadet Male, the Borotra Cup.
I encourage all sports fans of the racket to go to Circle Leisure Torrelavega from July 30 to August 1 because,
undoubtedly, they will enjoy the good players do these lads, who are at the springboard that separates the fans of
professionalism.
At the Circle Leisure will stay together the major European teams, including the Spanish one. They will be 32 players
representing 8 countries full of enthusiasm and desire to give the best of themselves.
For these young cadets players it will be an unforgettable experience of living, companionship and sport.

Jóvenes de 8 países europeos en edad cadete
(Sub-16) nos visitarán durante 4 días y quisiera,
a través de estas líneas, darles la bienvenida
a nuestra tierra y desearles una provechosa
competición.
Este Campeonato nos ha de servir para la
promoción del Tenis entre nuestros jóvenes y
para demostración de lo que, con la unión de
esfuerzos por parte de todos (Clubes, Instituciones,

Próximos a cumplir 150 años, constatamos que el Círculo de Recreo de Torrelavega ha
vivido muchos acontecimientos junto y en paralelo a Torrelavega. Son muchos vividos
en nuestra ciudad. Miles de torrelaveguenses han sido y serán, socios y usuarios de
nuestro querido “Casino”, nombre con el que es conocido popularmente; la relación
siempre ha sido muy entrañable y directa.
Desde el Círculo de Recreo hemos vivido las distintas inquietudes culturales que a lo
largo de los años ha tenido Torrelavega. Concursos de pintura, fotografía, conferencias,
presentaciones de libros, exposiciones de pintura, pruebas deportivas, etc. han tenido
cabida en nuestras instalaciones. Nuestra colaboración ha sido directa y sin reservas,
así durante 150 años. Nunca hemos vivido de espaldas a Torrelavega porque todos los
socios del Círculo de Torrelavega somos torrelaveguenses.
Durante este siglo y medio, varios presidentes o socios del Círculo de Recreo han sido
la máxima autoridad en el Ayuntamiento ¡han sido nuestros alcaldes!
Son hechos que están en la historia de nuestra ciudad y que todos esperamos se
puedan seguir llevando a cabo durante muchos más años, pues nuestro “Casino” es
una entidad viva, social, cultural y deportiva.

lose to 150 years, Torrelavega’s Circle Leisure has experienced many events together and in
parallel to Torrelavega. Many of them lived in our city. Thousands of torrelaveguenses have been
and will be, members and users of our beloved “Casino”, name under which it is well-known, the
relationship has always been very direct and beloved.
From the Circle Leisure we have lived different cultural concerns that, over the years Torrelavega
has had. Painting and photography contests, lectures, book’s presentations, painting exhibitions,
sport’s tests, etc., have taken place in our sport facilities. Our collaboration has been directly and
unreservedly, during 150 years. We have never lived turning one’s back on Torrelavega because
all the members in the Circle of Torrelavega are torrelaveguenses.
During this century and a half, several presidents or members of the Circle Leisure have been the
highest authority in the city council, ¡have been our mayors!
These are facts that are in the history of our city and we all hope we will be able to carry on for
many more years, because our “Casino” is a sportive, cultural, social and living entity.

El Círculo de Recreo es la asociación más antigua
de la ciudad de Torrelavega y uno de los centros
de su género más veteranos de España. Desde
que abrió sus puertas el 1 de enero de 1861, el
Círculo de Recreo de Torrelavega ha funcionado
ininterrumpidamente, adaptándose a diferentes
épocas y ampliando sus objetivos y recursos hasta
contar, hoy en día, con una importante oferta
deportiva, cultural y de ocio.
The Circle Leisure is the oldest association of
Torrelavega’s town and one of the most veteran
institutions in its kind of Spain. Since it opened its doors
on January 1, 1861, the Circle Leisure of Torrelavega
has worked non stop, adapting to different times and
expand its goals and resources up to count today with
an important sports, cultural and leisure offer.
En las primeras décadas del siglo XIX, surgieron
en toda la geografía española, una importante
cantidad de círculos culturales, recreativos,
comerciales y artísticos, con especial incidencia
en las capitales de provincia y en las villas más
prósperas del país. La idea de hacer círculo, de
unir intereses, cobró fuerza entre profesionales
liberales, terratenientes, comerciantes, industriales
y artistas que hicieron de estos centros un espacio
para la convivencia en el que dar cauce también
a sus comunes inquietudes.
Los primeros cuarenta años de historia del
Círculo de Recreo de Torrelavega (1861-1901)
trascurrieron en un piso de la Plaza Mayor, donde

In the early decades of the nineteenth century, a
significant amount of cultural recreational, commercial
and artistic circles, with special emphasis on provincial
capitals and most prosperous villages, came up
throughout the Spanish geography, The idea of making
circle and joined interests, gained strenght momentum
among liberal professionals, landowners, merchants,
industrialists and artists who made these centres a
space for coexistence in which also give their common
concerns.
The forty first years of Torrelavega’s Circle Leisure history
(1861-1901) passed on one floor of the Major square,
where it had games room, library, and a place where
they organize dance, musical and scenic performances
in specific dates. In those years, the Circle Leisure
also rented, with uneven success, different premises
where they programmed plays, acting the Society as a
promoter of one of the main hobbies of the time.

el Círculo de Recreo alquiló también, con desigual
éxito, diferentes locales en los que programaron
obras de teatro, actuando la Sociedad como
promotora de una de las principales aficiones de
la época.
Fue en 1902 cuando fue inaugurado el primer
edificio en propiedad del Círculo de Recreo –donde
hoy está la sede social- un edificio que nada tenía
que envidiar a los mejores de su categoría y que
era, en aquella época, la viva expresión de una
ciudad en pleno crecimiento, muy dinámica y con
un gran porvenir. El desarrollo de Torrelavega
en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX fue más que
considerable. Entre 1850 y 1900, la villa pasó
de tener poco más de 1.000 habitantes a contar
casi con 4.000. El crecimiento municipal fue
algo inferior, pero notable, pasando de 3.375 a
7.777 el número de pobladores en el total de los
pueblos del Ayuntamiento. Los mercados de todo
tipo de productos y las ferias ganaderas fueron
los principales resortes de este crecimiento, sin
olvidar que la situación estratégica de la ciudad,
en pleno cruce de caminos, propició también el
trazado de las dos líneas de ferrocarril que aún
existen en la actualidad con el consiguiente efecto
multiplicador sobre su actividad económica. Al
mismo tiempo, el desarrollo de una incipiente
industria y el asentamiento de establecimientos
comerciales en sus principales calles y plazas
generaron la puesta en marcha de escuelas,
iniciativas culturales, centros benéficos y nuevas
y grandes casas que en pocas décadas crearon
la imagen de una pequeña ciudad, donde poco
tiempo antes sólo había una aldea parecida a
cualquier otra de su entorno.
El Círculo de Recreo no se mostró ajeno a
la transformación vivida en Torrelavega en
la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. No en vano,
muchos de sus socios estuvieron al frente de las
instituciones públicas y privadas que cambiaron el
rumbo de la villa. Directivos y socios del Círculo
de Recreo actuaron desde el Ayuntamiento y
desde otras entidades para hacer de Torrelavega
una ciudad y no podía ser menos que el propio
Círculo construyera un edificio acorde con
esta nueva categoría. Era evidente que el piso
alquilado en la Plaza Mayor no era lugar idóneo
para una Sociedad con evidentes perspectivas de
crecimiento, de modo que en una Junta General
celebrada en el año 1899, medio centenar de
socios del Círculo tomaron el acuerdo unánime
de comprar en diez mil pesetas de las de
entonces, un terreno de 2.000 metros cuadrados
aproximadamente, donde poco tiempo más
tarde, concretamente el 15 de agosto de 1902,

Circle Leisure was inaugurated -where the head office
is today- a building that had nothing to envy to the best
in its class and was, at that time, the living expression
of a city growing, very dynamic and with a great future.
Torrelavega´s development in the second half of the
nineteenth century was more than significant. Between
1850 and 1900, the village has increased from just over
1.000 inhabitants to rely almost 4.000. The municipal
growth was somewhat lower, but noticeable, rising from
3.375 to 7.777 the number of total people in the council.
Markets of all kinds of products and cattle markets were
the essential means of this growth, without forgetting
the strategic location of the city, in full crossroads that
also led the delineation of two railway lines that still
exist nowadays with the attendant multiplier effect on
his economic activity. At the same time, development
of an incipient industry and commercial establishment’s
settlement in its main streets and squares generated
that schools, cultural centers and major charitable and
new houses, start up. In a few decades all these things
created the image of a small city, where shortly before
was only a village like any other of its environment.
The Circle Leisure was not unaware of the transformation
experienced in the second half of the nineteenth century
at Torrelavega. In fact, many of their members were at
the front of public and private institutions that changed
the course of the village. Directors and members of
the Circle Leisure acted from the Council and other
organizations to make Torrelavega a town and, could
not be less than the Circle built a building commensurate
with this new category. It was evident that the rented
apartment in the Major Square was not an ideal place
for a Society with obvious growth prospects, so at a
General Meeting held in the year 1899, fifty members
of the Circle agreed to buy in ten thousand pesetas,
from thereafter, a field of approximately 2.000 square
metres, where a short time later, specifically on August
15, 1902, the majestic building that for almost seventy
years was its registered office, was inaugurated.

La actividad del Círculo de Recreo en la primera
mitad del siglo XX fue también muy notable. El
crecimiento de la población y de la actividad
industrial y comercial fue tan extraordinario
entre 1900 y 1950 que lógicamente, los socios
del Círculo de Recreo aumentaron también en
proporción, siendo más de 500 los contabilizados
en el año 1958. Tenía entonces el municipio de
Torrelavega casi 30.000 habitantes, diez veces
más que un siglo antes, cuando se había fundado
el Círculo de Recreo. La acción de grandes
industrias como la Real Compañía Asturiana de
Minas, Solvay, Continental, Sniace, las fábricas
de calzado, las industrias de mecanizado y
otras dedicadas a diferentes ramas de actividad,
propiciaron este extraordinario crecimiento
poblacional que también se dejó notar en el
Círculo de Recreo.
El crecimiento de Torrelavega era imparable y
aún faltaba un nuevo estirón en su desarrollo al
calor de la gran industria y un pujante comercio.
La población municipal aumentaba año tras
año por la llegada de nuevos habitantes y una
creciente natalidad. Era evidente que la ciudad,
como también el Círculo de Recreo, necesitaba
una completa renovación para adaptarse a
una nueva coyuntura cuantitativa y cualitativa.
Torrelavega tenía 31.000 habitantes en 1960,
pero los más avezados sabían que esa población
se iba a multiplicar por dos en sólo treinta años.
Los dirigentes del Círculo de Recreo tenían que
ponerse manos a la obra para dar respuesta a un
cambio en el número de socios, pero también en
las costumbres sociales, en los entretenimientos

The activity of the Circle Leisure in the first half of the
twentieth century was also very noticeable. Population
and industrial and commercial activity, grow in an

well as the Circle Leisure, needed a complete renovation
to accommodate a new quantitatively and qualitatively
juncture. Torrelavega had 31.000 inhabitants in 1960,
but the most advanced knew that these people were
going to multiply by two in only thirty years. Managers of
the Circle Leisure had to work hard to answer the change
in the number of members, but also in social habits,
entertainment and preferences of an increasingly large
group that demanded new leisure services according
to modern times. That’s when the idea of making the
Tronquerías Sport Club, a huge complex with swimming
pools, tennis courts, bowling alleys, sports track, soccer
field, large green spaces and a modern building with a
cafe, restaurant and everything needed to respond to
the demands of old and new members. But before, in
the year 1969, was inaugurated the new headquarters
in the city centre, where was the old building, a crucial
action to open the doors of the Summer Club in 1975.
Since the 60’s and 70, the Circle Leisure has registered
y preferencias de un colectivo, cada vez más
numeroso, que demandaba nuevos servicios
de ocio acordes a los tiempos modernos. Fue
entonces cuando nació la idea de hacer el Club
Deportivo de Tronquerías, un enorme complejo
con piscinas, pistas de tenis, boleras, pista
polideportiva, campo de fútbol, grandes espacios
verdes y un moderno edificio con cafetería,
restaurante y todo lo necesario para responder
a las exigencias de los antiguos y nuevos socios.
Pero antes, en el año 1969, fue inaugurada la
nueva sede social en el centro de la ciudad,
donde estuvo el antiguo edificio, una actuación
fundamental para poder abrir las puertas del
Club de Verano en el año 1975.
Desde los años 60 y 70, el Círculo de Recreo ha
registrado cambios evidentes. El número de socios
ha ido creciendo hasta estabilizarse en una cifra
cercana a las 1.800 familias. Algunas actividades
culturales y sociales organizadas en la sede
social se han dirigido no sólo a los socios de la
entidad, sino a todas las personas interesadas en
asistir a conferencias, conciertos o exposiciones.
Al mismo tiempo, la oferta de servicios internos
ha ido creciendo con la puesta en marcha de
escuelas deportivas, concursos y campeonatos en
diferentes disciplinas, cursos de formación y un
sinfín de actividades, sin olvidar las fiestas y bailes
de temporada que han sido desde muy antiguo
uno de sus principales atractivos.
Los 150 años de historia del Círculo de Recreo
son un claro ejemplo de adaptación de esta
entidad a los cambios sociales de su entorno y al
devenir de una ciudad con la que ha convivido
a lo largo de todos estos años. Queda muy lejos
el tiempo en que se fundó la primitiva Sociedad,
y lejanos son también los años en que se jugaba
esporádicamente a los bolos o al tenis en el
entorno de su antigua sede social. La práctica
del deporte no podía tener pleno desarrollo en
el limitado espacio de un jardín urbano y por
ello los dirigentes del Casino, como se conoce
popularmente al Círculo de Recreo, tomaron la
ambiciosa decisión de crear un centro de ocio
sobre el que asentar la continuidad de esta
institución durante mucho tiempo más.

At the same time, the internal services offer had grown
with the start up of sports schools, competitions and
championships in different disciplines, training courses
and a multitude of activities, and we must not forget the
seasonal festivals and dances that have been, since the
beginning, one of its main attractions.
The 150-year history of the Circle Leisure, are a clear
example of adaptation of this entity to social changes
in their environment and the future of a city with which
has lived over all these years. It is far the time that was
founded the primitive Society, and far as well, the years
in which played bowling or tennis around the head
office, was sporadic. The sport could not have full
development in the limited space of a garden city, so
that is why the Casino´s leaders, as the Circle Leisure
is well-known, took the ambitious decision to create an
entertainment centre on which, settle the continuity of
this institution for much longer.
The history of the Torrelavega´s Circle Leisure has
travelled most of the nineteenth century and throughout
the twentieth century, witnessing important developments
in local life. Now, when we barely made progress in
the twenty-first century, an important event in the world
of tennis as the Junior Davis Cup, known as Borotra
Cup, test again their organization ability and gave it the
opportunity to add a new chapter in its long biography.

La historia del Círculo de Recreo de Torrelavega ha
recorrido buena parte del siglo XIX y todo el siglo
XX, siendo testigo de importantes acontecimientos
en la vida local. Ahora, cuando apenas hemos
avanzado en el siglo XXI, una cita muy relevante en
el mundo del tenis, como es la Copa Davis Junior
de Tenis conocida como la Copa Borotra, vuelve
a poner a prueba su capacidad de organización
y le concede la oportunidad de añadir un nuevo
capítulo a su larga biografía.

Copa Borotra Cup’s origin
La Copa Borotra debe su nombre al jugador Jean
Borotra (1898-1994), conocido como “El Vasco
que salta” que se convirtió en uno de los héroes
de los grand slams. Nacido en 1898, Jean Borotra
descubre el tenis a los 21 años, durante su servicio
militar en Alemania en 1919. Empujado por su
hermano a inscribirse en un torneo de tenis, su
carrera habría podido detenerse allí… ¡Pero sus
antecedentes en la pelota vasca y una condición
física perfecta van a hacer de él en cinco años, un
campeón de Wimbledon!
¡A su segundo torneo, ganado 6/0 4/0, se
precipita por casualidad sobre una bola corta
y echa, a pesar suyo, una volea ganadora!
Sorprendido, se precipita entonces a la red sobre
todos los puntos y su adversario no hace un juego
más. ¡Aquí Borotra va lanzado!
¡Su técnica es aún precaria y cambia la raqueta
de mano sin hacer reveses, como en la pelota
vasca! Wiesbaden, profesor, le convence de no
jugar más que con una mano y le explica la
técnica básica del revés. En algunas semanas,
trabajando sin descanso, Borotra mejora su golpe
de ataque.
Con su temperamento de ganador, su volea, su
agresividad en la red y su entusiasmo, Borotra va
rápidamente a competir con los mejores jugadores
franceses. ¡A partir de 1922, campeón del mundo
de dobles sobre tierra batida con Henri Cochet,
seleccionado en Copa Davis y cuartos de final en
Wimbledon! ¡Qué ascensión!

Borotra Cup was named like that cause the player Jean
Borotra (1898-1994), known as “The Basque who
jumps” which became one of the heroes of the grand
slams. Born in 1898, Jean Borotra discovered tennis at
age 21, during his military service in Germany in 1919.
Motivated by his brother to join a tennis tournament, his
career could have stopped there… But his background
in the Basque ball and his perfect physical condition
make him a Wimbledon champion in five years!
In his second tournament, won 6/0 4/0, was precipitated
by chance on a short ball and despite him a winner
smash! Surprised, then he precipitates to the net on
every point and his opponent does not make any more
game. Here Borotra is launched!
His technique is still scanty and changes the racket hand
without doing backhands, as in the Basque Pelota! His
teacher Wiesbaden persuaded him not to play rather
than with one hand and explains the basic technique
of backhand. In few weeks, working hard, Borotra
improves his approaches.
With his winner character, his smash, his aggressiveness
at the net and his enthusiasm, Borotra goes quickly to
compete with the best French. Since 1922, double world
champion on clay with Henri Cochet, selected to the
Davis Cup and quarter-finals at Wimbledon! What a
rise!

1924 is his big year. When he was 26, he won three
championship titles from France (which are not yet open
to foreigners) and a month later, Wimbledon, his first

tres títulos del campeonato de Francia (que no
están aún abiertos a los extranjeros) y un mes
más tarde, Wimbledon, su primer título individual
contra el joven René Lacoste, con 20 años. ¡Es
la consagración! Pero, qué tiempos más felices
en los que se podía ganar Wimbledon al cabo
de su quinto año de tenis… En Wimbledon, se
gana su apodo (the bounding basque!, el vasco
que salta!), debido a sus proezas a la red. Su
amabilidad, su sentido del humor, sus payasadas
sobre la pista le valdrán ser, por muchos años,
uno de los deportistas franceses más famosos.
Después de un segundo éxito en Wimbledon
en 1926, deja paso, dejando a Pollo y Lacoste
desempeñar los papeles principales en individuales,
en todos los encuentros de copa Davis. Debe
dejar a sus dos camaradas recoger los títulos de
individuales en los torneos de los grandes slams.
Ganando algunas veces a Pollo, más raramente
a Lacoste, pero nunca a los dos en el mismo
torneo. Deberá esperar a 1931, la jubilación de
Lacoste y la bajada de Pollo, para conquistar un
último título individual en Roland-Garros. Pero
su verdadera bestia negra, era Tilden, no le
conseguirá nunca ganar en Copa Davis ni en un
torneo de los grand slam, a pesar de numerosos
encuentros épicos que llegaban a menudo hasta
el quinto set. Borotra cuenta sin embargo con una
victoria sobre Tilden, obtenida en el invierno de
1926 durante los campeonatos de América en
pista cubierta. Era la primera derrota de Tilden
desde 1919 en un partido importante y la primera
victoria de un francés sobre el gran Bill; tuvo en
la época una gran repercusión. Tilden lo odiaba
cordialmente, despreciaba su táctica basada
en el ataque a muerte y sobre todo no le temía,
sabiendo que encontraría siempre en su paleta de
golpes y su sentido táctico, los recursos necesarios
para contrarrestar su juego de voleas. En cuanto
a Lacoste, temía a Borotra, por sus incesantes
subidas a la red. “Si el globo no existiera, Jean
sería absolutamente imbatible”, decía.
Encuentra su lugar en la copa Davis en 1929
después de la jubilación prematura de Lacoste.
Una carrera tan brillante como en sus principios.
En 1932, en su última participación, gana en
individuales. Se permite el lujo a sus 34 años, de
ganar al nuevo campeón del mundo de la época,
al americano Ellsworth de 21 años. ¡Luego gana
al número 2 americano, Allison en cinco sets
después de haber salvado seis bolas de partido y
haber efectuado un cambio de zapatos!

in which you can win Wimbledon at the end of your fifth
year of tennis. At Wimbledon, he won his nickname (the
bounding basque!), because of his exploits at the net.
His kindness, his sense of humour, his jokes on the track
will be worth to be, for many years, one of the most
famous French sportsmen.
After a second success at Wimbledon in 1926, gives
way, leaving Pollo and Lacoste play major roles in
singles, in every Davis Cup matches. He must leave his
two colleagues gather trophies of singles tournaments
at the grand slams. Winning Pollo sometimes, seldom
to Lacoste, but never both in the same tournament. He
must wait until 1931, with Lacoste´s retirement and
Pollo´s downfall, to win his last single title at RolandGarros. But his truly black beast was Tilden. He can ever
win him in Davis Cup or in a tournament of the grand
slam, despite of numerous epic matches, that often do
not finish until the fifth set. Borotra count with a victory
over Tilden, obtained in winter 1926 during the indoor
America´s championships. It was the first defeat of Tilden
since 1919 in an important game and the first victory of
a Frenchman on the great Bill; so, at the time it had a
major backwash. Tilden hated him cordially, despised
his tactics based on the death attack and over all the
things he was not afraid of him, knowing that he always
would find in his range of strokes and tactical sense, the
resources needed to counter his smash game. In regard
to Lacoste, he was afraid of Borotra, for his constant
rises to the net. “If the Lob would not exist, Jean would
be absolutely unbeatable” he used to say.

¡Finalista de Roland-Garros en dobles con
Nectarina en 1939, ganó después de la guerra,
a los 51 años, el campeonato de Inglaterra sobre
pista cubierta! ¡Y cerca de 80 años, se podía
verlo en el Tenis Club de París enfrentándose en
individuales-dobles (es decir, sobre las dos mitades
de terreno opuestas) a adversarios 50 años más
jóvenes que él! Tenía entonces siempre esta
formidable voluntad de subir sistemáticamente a la
red. 62 años después de su primera participación,
hizo una última aparición. En Wimbledon con 87
años, en la prueba del doble mixto veterano.
Palmarés
Su palmarés en grand slams lo convierte en
un héroe: 4 individuales masculino, 9 dobles
masculinos y 5 dobles mixto. En 1928, se convierte
en el primer tenista de la historia que gana la
misma prueba en los cuatro torneos de los grand
slams: Dobles mixto en Australia (1928), Francia
(1927-34), Wimbledon (1925) y América (1926).
Es el primer tenista también de la historia en haber
sido finalista de los cuatro torneos de los grands
slams individuales: Vencedor en Australia (1928),
a Roland-Garros (1931), a Wimbledon (1924
y 26), y finalista en Forest Hills (1926). A todos
estos títulos, conviene añadir el triplete realizado
en 1924 durante los campeonatos de Francia,
cuando no eran aún internacionales: individual
señores, dobles señores (con R. Lacoste) y dobles
mixto (con J.Billout).
Además, Jean Borotra consigue llevar en paralelo
su carrera deportiva con su faceta política como
Comisario General de Educación y Deportes de
1940 a 1942, y una brillante carrera de ingeniero
y administrador de sociedades hasta 1976.

He would find his place in the Davis Cup in 1929 after
the Lacoste´s premature retirement, a career as bright
as in his beginnings. In 1932, his last involvement, he
wins at single. He gives oneself the pleasure to win the
new world champion at the time, the american Ellsworth
that was 21 years old, at the age of 34. And then, he
wins American number 2, Allison in five sets, after saving
six match balls and having a change of shoes!
He had an exceptional long career. Contestant in the
last round of Roland-Garros finalist in doubles with
Nectarine in 1939, won after the war, to 51 years, the
indoor championship of England! And nearly being 80,
one could see him in the Paris Tennis Club in singles
face-doubles (so, on the two halves of opposite land)
to opponents 50 years younger than him! At that time
he provided this amazing desire to systematically raise
the net. 62 years after his first match, made a final
appearance at Wimbledon at the age of 87, in the
veteran´s mixed double.
Career highlights
His track record in grand slams makes him a hero: 4
single male, 9 double men and 5 mixed doubles. In
1928, he became the first tennis player in history that
wins the same test in all four tournaments of the grand
slams: mixed doubles in Australia (1928), France (192734), Wimbledon (1925) and America (1926). It is also
the first tennis player in history to have been a finalist
in the last round in all four tournaments of the single
grand slams: winner in Australia (1928), Roland-Garros
(1931), Wimbledon (1924 and 26), and finalist in the
last round of Forest Hills (1926). To all these titles should
add the triplet made in 1924 during the championships
in France, when they were not international yet: Single
male, double male (with R. Lacoste) and mixed doubles
(with J. Billout).
In addition, Jean Borotra manages to keep his
sporting career in parallel with its political dimension
as Commissioner General Education and Sports from
1940 to 1942, and a brilliant career as an engineer and
manager of companies until 1976.
