Part Four of Five
A few weeks ago your homework was to
determine if your weekly donation to the Church was
greater or less than 1% of your total income. 1% is
not much when compared to the Biblical standard,
the “tithe”, which is 10%, but we have to start
somewhere.
There are probably not very many people
reading this that want to do less for the Church. Most
of us sincerely want to do more. And we need to
evaluate our time and talent as well as our treasure,
but for now, the focus is on treasure.
When is “more” less and “almost nothing”
everything? Read again this familiar story: Mk 12:41-44
(Jesus) sat down opposite the treasury and observed
how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people
put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two
small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself,
he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in
more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they
have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from
her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”
Nobody but you can determine your
plan for stewardship, but here are questions
we can all think about:
1. How does what I give the church
compare to what I spend on
entertainment or non-essentials?
2. Do I have a habit or consuming interest
that is costing a lot of money?
3. Do I increase my donation when I get a
bonus or an increase in pay?
4. Am I willing to give a percentage to God
and commit to increasing it over time
through sacrifice and better money
management?

Unas semanas atrás su tarea fue de determinar si

su ingreso total. 1% no mucho cuando se compara al
estándar Bíblico, el “diezmo”, cual es 10%, pero
tenemos que empezar en un lado.
Probablemente no muchas personas lean
esto que quisieran hacer menos. Muchos
sinceramente quieran hacer más. Tenemos que
evaluar nuestro tiempo y nuestros talentos y también
nuestros tesoros, pero por ahora, el enfoque está en
el tesoro.
¿Cuándo es “mas” menos y “casi nada” todo?
Lean otra vez esta historia familiar: Mc12:41-44
Jesús estaba sentado frente a las alcancías del templo,
mirando cómo la gente echaba allí sus monedas. Muchos ricos
daban en abundancia. En esto, se acercó una viuda pobre y
echó dos moneditas de muy poco valor. Llamando entonces a
sus discípulos, Jesús les dijo: “Yo les aseguro que esa pobre
viuda ha echado en la alcancía más que todos. Porque los
demás han echado de lo que les sobraba; pero ésta, en su
pobreza ha echado todo lo que tenía para vivir”.
Nadie solo tú puedes determinar tu plan de
mayordomía, pero aquí han preguntas que nosotros
podemos pensar:
¿Cuánto le doy a la Iglesia comparado con lo
que gasto en entretenimiento o cosas no
esenciales?
¿Tengo hábitos de consumen o intereses que
cuestan mucho dinero?
¿Cuándo me dan un bono o me aumentan mi
sueldo incremento mi donación?
¿Estoy dispuesto a darle un porcentaje a Dios y
comprometerme a aumentar el tiempo extra
como sacrificio para tener más dinero para
manejar?

Something Happened
Sucedido Incidente
and change is coming . . . for the Good
y el cambio está llegando . . . por el Bien
Last weekend a very unfortunate incident
occurred before the 12:30 Sunday Mass. It was a
very busy weekend, as we had a wedding and three
Quinceañeras. In order to fit all this in, the
wedding and one Quince were scheduled for
Saturday afternoon, another Quince at the 9:30 AM
Sunday Mass, and the final one at the 12:30 PM
Mass. One of the choir members took issue with our
having a Quince during the Mass. Granted it was a
very hot and humid day but nobody is able to predict
the weather when scheduling events in advance.
And, the choir was notified in advance that they
would be playing along with our organist/pianist for
this special Mass, as was requested by the family,
and this person had an issue with that as well.
This choir member, instead of just registering
a complaint in a respectful manner, attacked me
verbally as follows: “You are a bad priest; you’re
just a bad priest. You’re bipolar, you’re just bipolar.
I am not certain this person even knows what a
bipolar diagnosis means, but I am certain that the
person showed by word and action that they were
out of control. It is not the first time this person has
exhibited erratic behavior and verbally insulted both
me and others, including some of our volunteers.
For this reason, the person was pointedly asked to
leave the Church and thankfully another choir
member took this person home.
Because of this sad incident, the music at the
12:30 PM and 7:00 PM Masses will be changing. In
the short term, skilled musician and vocalist
Matthew Richert, who plays at most of our bilingual
Masses as well as most Spanish funerals and
weddings, will provide music for the 12:30 PM
Mass. He has a large repertoire of Spanish hymns,
so do not worry. Hopefully some of the remaining
choir members will be willing to join him.
For the 7:00 PM Mass, a new choir will be
recruited. Please see the ad elsewhere in the
bulletin. Also, please pray for healing for both the
person who caused this disruption in our Church, as
well as all who were affected by it. Let’s all work
together to make things better and reflect the beauty
of our holy Catholic Church.
El fin de semana pasado un incidente muy
inoportuno ocurrió antes de la Misa de las 12:30pm
el domingo. Era un fin de semana muy ocupado ya
que teníamos una boda y tres quinceañeras. Para
poder hacer todo esto, la boda y una de las quince
fueron programadas para el sábado al medio día, otro
Quince en la misa de las 9:30am el domingo, y
finalmente la última a las 12:30pm. Uno de los
miembros del coro discrepo con tener un Quince
durante la Misa. A pesar que fue un día muy
caloroso y húmedo pero nadie puede predecir la
temperatura cuando programan eventos con
anticipación. Y el coro fue notificado en anterioridad
que tocarían junto con nuestro organista/pianista
para esta misa, como fue solicitado por la familia, y
esta persona tenía un problema con esto también.
Este miembro del coro, en vez de registrar
esta queja en una manera respetuosa, me ataco
verbalmente en la forma seguida: “Tu eres un
sacerdote malo; tu solo eres un mal sacerdote. Tu
eres bipolar, tu eres bipolar.” No estoy seguro que
esta persona sabe lo que quiere decir lo que es un
diagnostico bipolar, pero yo sé de seguro que esta
persona enseño que estaba fuera de control. No es la
primera vez que esta persona se ha expuesto el
comportamiento errático y verbalmente me ha
insultado a mí y a otros, incluyendo algunos de
nuestros voluntarios. Por esta razón, esta persona
fue intencionadamente pedido que se marchara de la
Iglesia y afortunadamente otro miembro del coro
llevo a esta persona a su casa.
Por este triste incidente, habrá un cambio con
la música de las misas de 12:30pm y 7:00pm. Por
corto tiempo, el experto músico y vocalista Matthew
Richert, quien toca y canta en muchas de las Misas
bilingüe y todas las misas fúnebres y bodas, se estará
brindando la música para la misa de la 12:30pm y
7:00pm. No se preocupen, tiene un gran repertorio
de himnos en español. Esperamos que el resto de los
miembros del coro colaboren junto a él.

También, oren por la sanación de estas dos personas
que causaron esta interrupción en nuestra Iglesia, así

Santa Iglesia Católica.

Gospel Note
“Whoever wishes to come after me must
deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For
whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but
whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the
Gospel will save it.” Mark 8:34-35
As disciples of Jesus we are called to walk in his
footsteps. This entails taking to heart the way Jesus told us to
behave. It also includes fulfilling one’s destiny, fulfilling one’s
life plan having been made in God’s image and likeness. All of
us were created out of love, and are here purposefully and for
a reason. Life is a gift, and we are called to use it well.
As disciples of Christ, awaiting his Second Coming
and the full restoration of God’s creation, we are called as
disciples to participate with Jesus in that restoration. We are
called to work with him against the evil crafted by the Devil who
is still very active in this fallen world. NO SMALL TASK! But, it
is a task we must strive to accomplish if we truly desire to be a
full disciple of our Lord. We should not be surprised when we
encounter the Evil One attempting to thwart us from reaching
our goal, which is eternal life with God. It is par for the course
being a Christian.
The text quoted above is perhaps the one most
misunderstood, and perhaps misused by people. “What a pain
in my side you are, I wish I didn’t have you as a cross in my
life!” This is one of Jesus’ teachings that should never be
trivialized, as it often is by many. It is rather an arduous job to
fulfill God’s Plan, following in Jesus’ footsteps in order to be an
adopted son/daughter of God and a faithful disciple.
Moreover, we have no choice in what cross or
crosses we have to carry to fulfill God’s plan and design. It is
not a matter of saying to God; “I’ll have the blue cross, or even
better I’ll have that green one, it is more to my liking.” With
respect to carrying the cross that we are presented with we
have only one choice, and the choice is whether to carry the
cross well like Jesus did, or not. Ask any true adult disciple of
Jesus, someone who has practiced the faith for years, and
demonstrably exudes holiness, and they will tell you the truth.
“Fr. Paul being a true Christian is no easy task, walking in
Jesus’ footsteps is a day to day challenge, and I can carry the
burden only on a day to day basis. It took me eleven years to
forgive my attacker, who took my sight, but at least now in
these last five years I am free from the burden of hate and
anger that I carried in the aftermath of his attack.”
Please take to heart the message of Jesus’ from
today’s Gospel. Pray for the grace to bear the cross or crosses
that come your way. The key to following this teaching is
keeping your eyes fixed on the goal, which is eternal life with
God. With Jesus’ help and with Jesus as the goal, no cross is
too hard to bear. “Even if they should take
your life, you will have life with me forever.”

“El que quiera venir conmigo, que renuncie
a sí mismo, que cargue con su cruz y que me siga.
Pues el que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá; pero el
que pierda su vida por mí y por el Evangelio, la
salvará”. Marcos 8: 34-35
Como discípulos de Jesús estamos llamados a caminar
en sus pasos. Esto implica de tomar de corazón la manera de
como Jesús nos dijo cómo comportarnos. También incluye
cumplir con nuestro destino, cumpliendo con el plan de nuestras
vidas haber sido hecha en la imagen y semejanza de Dios. Todos
nosotros fuimos creados de amor, y estamos aquí de propósito y
por una razón. La vida es un regalo, y estamos llamados para que
la usemos bien.
Como discípulos de Cristo, es espera de su Segunda
Venida y la pena restauración de la creación de Dios, nosotros
somos llamados como discípulos para participar con Jesús en
esa restauración. Nosotros somos llamados a trabajar con él
contra el mal creado por el Diablo, que sigue siendo muy activo
en este mundo caído. ¡NINGUNA TAREA PEQUEÑA! Pero, pero
es una tarea que nosotros tenemos que esforzarnos por lograr si
nosotros deberá mente queremos ser discípulos de nuestro
Señor. Nosotros no los debe sorprender cuando nos
encontramos con El Mal tratando de frustrarnos a nosotros de
alcanzar nuestra meta, cual es la vida eterna con Dios. Es parte
del curso de ser un cristiano.
El texto citado encima es quizás el más incomprendido,
y quizás el más mal usado por la gente. “¡Que dolor en mi lado
eres, me gustaría no tener te como una cruz en mi vida!” Esta es
una de las enseñanzas de Jesús que nunca debe ser trivializada,
ya que a menudo es por muchos. Más bien, es un trabajo arduo
para cumplir el Plan de Dios, siguiendo los pasos de Jesús para
ser un adoptado hijo/hija de Dios y un fiel discípulo.
Además, nosotros no tenemos otra elecciones de que
cruz o cruces nosotros tenemos que cargar para satisfacer el
plan y diseño de Dios. No es un asunto de decirle a Dios; “Yo
tengo la cruz azul, o mejor yo quiero la verde, porque me gusta
mejor.” Con respecto a llevar la cruz que se nos presenta
tenemos solamente una opción, y la opción es de llevarla bien
como Jesús lo hiso, o no. Pregúntele a cualquier discípulo adulto
verdadero de Jesús, alguien que ha practicado la fe durante años,
y demostrable exuda santidad, y ellos de dirán la verdad. “El
Padre Paul un verdadero cristiano no es una tarea fácil,
caminando en los pasos de Jesús es un reto de día a día, y yo
puedo cargar la cargar solo un día a la vez. Me tome once años
de perdonar a mi agresor, que me llevo mi vista, pero al menos
ahora, en estos últimos cinco años, estoy libre de la carga de odio
y rabia que he realizado en el después de su ataque.”
Por favor tomen de corazón el mensaje de Jesús del
Evangelio. Oren por la gracia de aguantar la cruz o las cruces que
llegan a su camino. La llave de seguir esta enseñanza es de
mantener su vista en la meta, cual es la vida eterna con Dios.
Con la ayuda de Jesús y con Jesús como el gol, ninguna cruz es
dura de aguantar. “Aun si deberían tomarle la vida, tu tendrás
vida por siempre.”
