From the liturgy team
Lent series: prayer, fasting and alms
Sisters and brothers, during the next weeks of
Lent, we now have a double motivation of intensifying our
Christian Life and a total self-giving in thanksgiving to God.
On one hand, we have the beginning of Lent, a time to renew ourselves in preparation for the Paschal Feast. On the
other hand, we have the Jubilee Year, the Divine Mercy
Year, decreed by Pope Francis. Through it, Jesus Christ will
give us infinite blessings from His Divine Mercy.
Requirement to Publish Notices of How to Report Abuse
As part of the Charter for the Protection of Children and
Young People, approved by the U.S. Bishops in 2002, each
parish is required to publish notices in their bulletins that
explain how and where people can report allegations of
sexual child abuse. A Victim Assistance Program has been
established by the Diocese of St. Augustine and pamphlets
are currently available in the hallway outside the parish office
and in the church vestibule. Please make a call to report any
suspicions of abuse.
In that way, in this coming season of Lent, we cannot separate prayer, fasting and mercy; if we have only one
of them or not all together, we have nothing. Prayer that is
fervent, careful, and comes from the heart is one of the
ways of repentance that we have to this coming season of
Lent. The first one, and the optimum, is the confession of
our sins. Another, and no less valuable one, is to put out of
our minds the harm done us by our enemies. If, moreover,
a man lives a modest, humble life, that, no less than the
other things I have mentioned, takes sin away. Fasting that
may be fulfilled not simply by abstinence from food but,
above all, by the renunciation of sin, is the soul of prayer.
Mercy is the lifeblood of fasting, and mercy receives;
then we should rejoice in to practice of almsgiving because
it embraces, under the single name of mercy, many excellent works of devotion. If you do not close your ear to others, you open God’s ear to yourself.
ATTENTION
The Diocese of Saint Augustine treats all allegations of sexual
misconduct seriously and deals with all allegations in a
prompt, confidential and thorough manner. To Report Abuse,
call: Diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator (904) 262-3200,
ext. 129, or the Department of Children and Families at 1-80096-Abuse (800) 962-2873.
Victimas (904) 262-3200, ext. 129 o Departamento de Niños y
Familias del Estado de la Florida1-800-96Abuse (800) 9622873.

JOIN THE NEW TEAM AT GRACE MARKETPLACE
With teams already covering the first, second, and third
Mondays of each month, our parish is now forming a new
team to provide dinners at Grace on fourth Mondays, beginning February 22. A parishioner (new in town) has
agreed to serve as team leader, so we now need to fill out
her team. She needs two kinds of volunteers:
Service committee collection
For the homeless
The homeless people in our community are
always in need of toiletries such as soap,
shampoo, deodorant, etc., as well as linens,
wash cloths and towels. The Service Committee will be collecting these items during the month
of February and through the first weekend of March. Look
for the bin in the church vestibule and thanks to all for your
support of this collection.
1.
Food preparation. You could help here if you can chop,
wash, peel, and help cook food. Food preparation begins in the new Grace kitchen 3:00 on the afternoon
of Feb. 22 and ends around 5:00.
2.
Serving the food. Servers should arrive a little after 5:00 p.m. to help set up the serving line. Serving
usually is finished by 6:30. Staffers at Grace are now
taking care of clean up.
For a commitment of a couple of hours per month you can
be part of this rewarding parish initiative. Contact Bill at
[email protected] to get on board.

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT - FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
It seems that we just finished with Christmas season, and here it is, the first Sunday of
Lent. How many people understand the timing of Easter, and therefore Ash Wednesday and
Lent? Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the first day of spring. This
means that Easter can vary on the calendar by more than a month, depending on the sun and the
moon. There is a full moon on the Wednesday after spring starts, so Easter is early this year.
Look at the first reading from Deuteronomy from today’s mass. Moses is laying down the
law. Having instructed the people to proclaim God’s goodness to them, he tells them to bring the first
fruits of the products of the soil which the LORD has given them as an offering to God. This is part of
the biblical basis for the tithe, returning to God a portion of his goodness to us. Do we acknowledge
that all that we are and have is a gift from God? Do we make any return to him in a real and significant way?
In addition to doing good deeds and avoiding personal vices, many of us are giving up something for Lent as a form of sacrifice and denial. I plan to fast and abstain from sweets, but I have an
ulterior motive for losing weight. This may be self-serving, but I’m also trying to be a good steward
of the gift of my body from God. For those of us giving up things that will lead to less frivolous spending, let’s turn that around into good and return it to God through his Church or his children in
need. One way to do this is to contribute to our second annual Helping Hands/Catholic Relief Services food packaging event on April 9. Fifty cents will supply a meal to a family. Please sign on to
package the food, too. It is a wonderful, meaningful, and fun event. Or drop it in the collection basket. Or donate to the Bishop’s Annual Stewardship Appeal.

Micah 6:8 - “You have been told, O mortal, what is good,
and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do justice
and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your
God.”
"Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure,
packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be
poured into your lap. For the measure with which you
measure will in return be measured unto you."
- Luke 6:38

optimo camino de penitencia la confesion de los pecados;
Seminarian: Wilson Colmenares
