Many miracles are attributed to his intercession and, over the centuries, he became a hugely popular saint. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him. That’s how he became a became the model for Santa Claus, whose English name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas (St. Nick). His feast day is December 6th. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, pawnbrokers, children, and students (amongst other things) throughout Christendom. On the cover: Amsterdam ar st, Jan Steen’s St. Nicholas Feast Day, circa 1663-1665, is available at h ps://commons.wikimedia.org/ wiki/File:Jan_Steen_%E2%80% 93_Het_Sint-Nicolaasfeest_(2).jpg. First Sunday of Advent Isaiah 2:1-5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD. Psalms 122:1-9 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May they prosper who love you! Romans 13:11-14 Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. Matthew 24:37-44 Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 11/27/2016 The most famous story about him involves how he helped a father of three daughters. The man was so poor that he couldn't afford a dowry for his three girls. During those days that meant they remained unmarried with a very uncertain future. St. Nick interceded by secreting donating 3 purses of gold coins over 3 nights, one for each of the 3 daughters. In some stories he threw the purses in through a window to avoid being identified as the donor, in others he dropped the money down the chimney, where it landed, plop, into the stocking of one of the girls. That is why Christmas stockings and gift-giving are associated with the saint. FAMILY ADVENT GATHERING SAINT NICHOLAS DAY Please join other families of St. Mark's Parish. Next Sunday, December 4th at the 10 AM Mass! We will hear the story of St. Nicholas, an Advent Saint. We invite all the children to leave one of their shoes downstairs before Mass for a surprise treat from St. Nick! Children's Mass followed by refreshments! Giving Tree 2016 The Christmas season is now upon us and the Giving Tree commi ee, through the Social Concerns ministry, is asking for your support. The response has always been excep onally generous, and we hope this year’s effort to bring hundreds of gi s to 5 local agencies will affirm our desire to serve the poor and help the needy. Please take an ornament from the tree and follow the direc ons listed. Be sure to a ach your ornament to your gi (see Special Note below), and remember that the deadline for most gi s is Sunday, December 11th. Thank you and may God bless you! Community Activities Local Appeal for Diocese in Haiti Shop Here First! Christmas Spectacular As you have read, the eye of Matthew passed over the Southern part of Haiti and destroyed most of the housing and the crops in that area. In addition, the world’s humanitarian aid to help Haiti recover from Matthew is significantly below what is needed. Father Paul Janvier, Associate Priest of Mother of Mercy Parish, Asbury Park, has been contacted by the Les Caye diocese and asked if he can obtain financial aid to help the dislocated residents. The diocese plans to distribute aid directly to the families in Les Caye, regardless of their religion. St. Catharine’s parish has been working with Fr. Paul over the past few years and have offered to help him raise funds for the Diocese of Les Caye. If you wish to make a contribution to the Les Caye Diocese, please make your checks payable to St. Catharine’s, at 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake, NJ 07762. Kindly mail in or drop off at the rectory with the envelope marked for Haitian Aid. The parish will forward the funds to the Les Caye diocese for distribution to the residents. Thank you!
