6th Grade newsletter
September 2015
Mathematics
Memos
Students begin their sixth
grade year investigating the
concepts of ratio and rate.
They use multiple forms of
ratio language and ratio
notation, and formalize
understanding of equivalent
ratios. Students apply
reasoning when solving
collections of ratio problems
in real world contexts. The
students will express a
fraction as a percent and
finding a percent of a quantity
in real world concepts,
supporting their reasoning
with familiar representations
they used previously in the
unit.

Scoop
Humanities
Headlines
During September, science
students will be increasing
their observation and inference
skills. Through multiple labs
and investigations, students
will use their data to form
claims and back it up with
evidence. We will also review
bar graphs and introduce line
graphs and pie charts.
Students will need to make
sure they are certain about
their data and will need to
check their TAILS when they
make their graphs. We look
forward to a great month!
Humanities students will be
getting used to the 6th grade
routine. The literacy
assessment we will be working
towards during the month of
September is a personal
narrative with a focus on an
incident-response-reflection
format for writing. Our first
social studies unit begins with
using atlases, reviewing the
continents and oceans,
knowing the countries of
North America, and learning
about human migrations. We
look forward to getting to
know your child in this first
month of school!

Humanidades
Los estudiantes comenzarán el
6to grado investigando
conceptos de proporción y
tasa. Ellos usarán múltiples
formas de lenguaje y notación
de proporciones, y formalizar
la comprensión de
proporciones equivalentes. Los
estudiantes aplicarán
razonamiento en la resolución
de problemas de proporciones
en contextos de la vida real.
Los estudiantes
harán conexiones entre su
comprensión de proporciones y
el valor de una proporción; y
luego a tasas y tasa unitarias,
descubriendo que un
porcentaje es una tasa por 100.
Durante el mes de septiembre,
los estudiantes estarán
aumentando sus habilidades de
observación e inferencia en la
clase de ciencias. A través de
múltiples actividades de
laboratorios e investigaciones,
los estudiantes utilizarán sus
datos para formar teorías y
respaldarlo con pruebas.
También revisaremos diagramas
de barras e introducir gráficas de
lineas y gráficas circulares. Los
estudiantes tendrán que
asegurarse de que sus datos están
correctos y de tener las partes
necesarias en sus gráficas.

Estudiantes de humanidades se
están acostumbrando a la rutina
de sexto grado. La evaluación
para la cual nos estaremos
preparando durante el mes de
septiembre es un relato
personal con un enfoque en un
formato de incidentesrespuesta-reflexión. Nuestra
primera unidad de estudios
sociales comienza con el uso de
los atlas, revisión de los
continentes y los
océanos, practicar los países de
América del Norte, y aprender
acerca de las migraciones
humanas. Estamos contentos de
poder llegar a conocer a su hijo
en este primer mes de clases!
