o ADENTRO ESTÁ LA INFORMACION DE Rembolso de Renta Atwater Senior Center 26 Atwater St. 203-946-8558 Toni Harp, Mayor Migdalia Castro, Director 165 Church St. New Haven, CT 203-946-7854 Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center 255 Goffe St. 203-946-8541 RENT REBATE INFORMATION INSIDE East Shore Senior Center 411 Townsend Avenue 203-946-8544 MAY (mayo) 2014 Dear Neighbor: Estimados vecinos: I love New Haven in springtime! Blooming trees, budding flowers, and bright, green grass remind me there’s no place more beautiful than our Elm City at this time of year! Did you know New Haven earned that nickname with the very first tree-planting program in America, eventually producing a canopy of mature trees – including some large elms. These days, the abundant presence of trees in New Haven provides a beautiful and pleasant setting for residents and visitors alike. Beyond that, our city’s trees are an important natural resource: they reduce energy use and cooling costs in summer, absorb rainwater to limit runoff and erosion, and help the environment filter harmful greenhouse gasses. Each year I welcome back the full canopy of New Haven trees. This month we also look forward to, among other things, the Westville Village Art Walk on Friday, May 9th and Saturday, May 10th. And on May 18th the Orchard Street Shul of Congregation Beth Israel will celebrate its 100th anniversary at its newly renovated facility, New Haven's only nationally recognized historic synagogue. This promises to be a terrific month – enjoy the season! Sinceramente, Alcaldesa Toni N. Harp 2 NEW HAVEN MAY (MAYO) 2014 o Greetings and Happy Spring! The City of New Haven began the Rent Rebate application process on Tuesday, April 15, 2014. As Director Irrita Osborn noted at the time, by her joining, she spanned two generations as her father, George Sweeney is also a member of the Center. Come to find out there are a few other members who make up two generation members at Dixwell-Newhallville. Here are a few interesting tidbits about the Sweeneys and Dorman Ransom and her daughter Melba Crowley. Dorman Ransom (left) explained her unusual first name saying that her much older sister chose her name and it stayed. Dorman, in her other life, worked for United Technology (Pratt & Whitney) for 25 years. Now she likes to travel, and in addition to coming to meetings, Dorman can be seen on Fridays playing the very popular Bingo at the Center. On occasion she even stands in for Glenn Johnson as the caller. Her daughter, Melba Crowley, retired from the Post Office after 37 years and became a DixwellNewhallville Senior Club member. She too likes to travel and also likes to make and to sell her beautiful jewelry (which she is wearing in the photo). One other interesting fact is that her daughter Melinda Lee Crowley is now working in Guinea, West Africa. Karen Sweeney had a recent, beautiful retirement party given her as she happily bid farewell to St. Raphael’s Hospital after 42 years of dedicated service working there. She spent 25 years working in Central Supply and 17 years in the Operating Room at the hospital. Karen is also active in her church, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and is glad she joined the seniors. George Sweeney is well known as being the first African American firefighter hired in New Haven on April 7, 1957 (he remembered the exact date). He served 39 years as a firefighter before retiring. Mr. Sweeney is also a past president of the Knickerbocker Golf Club and he too enjoys being a member of the senior center as he “hangs out” with the other fellows. A hearty laugh provides short but similar benefits of aerobic exercise for improved heart (and brain) health and immunity. Other benefits: Laughter elevates the production of neurotransmitters linked to improved memory and alertness while decreasing stress hormones that can cloud thinking. And when listening to jokes, as you wrestle to understand the punch line, areas of the brain that are vital to learning, creativity and decision-making activate, much as they do when working out "brainteaser" crossword puzzles and Sudoku. Take a nap: In addition to improved daytime alertness, good sleep — night after night — helps keep memory and learning well-tuned. But even with Rip Van Winkle-like nocturnal habits (and certainly without), consider a regular afternoon nap for about 90 minutes. It costs nothing but time — and the pay back, according to studies, could be significant. Compared to non-nappers, those who partake in daytime zzz's display measurable improvements in tests gauging decisionmaking, problem-solving, creativity and even tasks like recalling directions. Meditate: Studies find that daily meditation can strengthen connections between brain cells, increase growth in the part of the brain that controls memory and language, and may even bolster the ability to process information and make decisions more quickly. There are various forms of meditation, but most involve spending 15–60 minutes — best if done at least once a day — of focused attention on a word, object, sound or even your own breathing. Classes help, but for cost (and other) consciousness, consider free "how-to" videos and help available online.
