I hope this year turns out to be the best
yet for New Haven and its residents –
and I have every reason to believe it will.
Las mejores de la suerte a cada uno de ustedes por la buena salud

As we settle in for the coldest part of the year it’s vitally
important to keep reminded of changeable weather
conditions that can quickly become treacherous. Each of us
has to remember to wear appropriate outerwear and stay
mindful of walking conditions when streets and sidewalks
are slippery.
Likewise, it’s important to eat properly and keep warm at
this time of year. Good nutrition helps us resist illness –
contact a staff member at your nearest senior center if
you’re having trouble getting enough good, healthy food or
if you’re having trouble heating your home this winter.
I also want you to know of a special service here in New
Haven, organized by a local success story, SeeClickFix.
Snowcrew.org provides a clearinghouse for those who need
snow shoveling and those willing to shovel snow. City
residents can sign up at SeeClickFix.com to make the
necessary arrangements.
Stay warm, be safe, and take good care of yourselves this
winter.

Mientras ustedes se van acogiendo a las temperaturas más frías del
año es vital mantenerse informado de las condiciones del tiempo
que pueden convertirse rápidamente traicioneras. Cada uno de

Happy New Year, Friends:
The first of this month marks the earth completing another journey around the moon. The beginning of this month also symbolizes the evolution of another phase in our lives—this phase can be
spiritual, mental, emotional, or physical. As we enter 2015, I encourage everyone to set attainable
goals, embark on new adventures, and fulfill any pending resolutions from 2014.
On January 8, 2015 a fire occurred at the Fairbank Apartments displacing approximately 130 residents. The city was able to accommodate 65 residents in an area hotel while the remainder of the
residents chose to stay with family members until the senior housing reopens. I would like to thank
all of the residents, their families, and those who are diligently working to reopen Fairbank Apartments for their patience, understanding, and unwavering support during this unforeseen event.
Throughout the duration of this event, I will continue to visit and monitor the wellbeing of our residents. If you have further questions about the status of Fairbank Apartments, please contact Lynn
or Gennie, the building’s management team, at 1-888-310-1970.
I would like to send my sincerest condolences to the families of Gus Cuomo and Dottie Harper.
Augustine “Gus” Cuomo passed away on December 15, 2014 & Dorothy “Dottie” Harper departed
this life on December 27, 2014. Gus served as the president of the Atwater Senior Center and
Dottie served as the recording secretary on the City of New Haven’s Commission on Aging. Both
Dottie and Gus will be sorely missed throughout the community. Tributes for both Gus and Dottie
are located on pages 9 & 10.

The Department of Elderly Services has prepared a list of Laundromats, pharmacies and grocery
stores. Most of the listed businesses deliver which is a great service to utilize during times of inclement weather. Please refer to pages 18-22 for further information about the listed pharmacies
and grocery stores.

Feliz Año Nuevo, Amigos:
El primer mes marca a la tierra completando una jornada alrededor de la luna. El principio de este
mes también simboliza la evolución de otra fase en nuestras vidas – esta fase puede ser espiritual,
mental, emocional o física. Al entrar al 2015, les exhorto a que se mantengan en las metas, entrar
en nuevas aventuras, y resolver las resoluciones pendientes que dejaron pendiente del 2014.
El 8 de enero de 2015 un fuego ocurrió en los Apartamentos de Fairbanks afectando
aproximadamente 130 residentes. La Ciudad de New Haven pudo acomodar 65 residentes en un
hotel cercano mientras los demás residentes escogieron en irse con sus familiares hasta que el
complejo de envejecientes esté listo para volver a sus apartamentos. Quisiera agradecerles a

HOLIDAY CHEER COMES TO
BERGER APARTMENTS

Before Christmas, the residents of Berger Apartments were treated to a special
holiday concert featuring students from Barnard Environmental Studies Magnet
School in New Haven, CT. The students ranged from preschool to the 8th grade.
Under the musical instruction of Erin Dooley, a large group of preschoolers and
kindergartners sang Christmas Carols to delight both the residents and parents who
were in attendance.
After the chorus sang, Barnard School’s band performed. The talented musicians
were conducted by James Tansley. The band featured: trumpets, clarinets, saxophones, trombones, flutes, drums and a xylophone. The musicians’ melodious
tunes resonated throughout the building! A number of old holiday musical scores
were performed and nearly brought down the house with the students’ version of
Queen’s, a band from the 1970s, “We Will Rock You”. The band members’ dedication to their musical craft was evident throughout their magnificent performance. After the band’s final musical selection, they received an enthusiastic standing ovation
from the audience!
The final group of performers presented a holiday skit that featured roles played
by all of the students. Ms. Dooley chose a script that was entertaining and significant. The moral of the story was that we should all accept each other for who we
are because we are all unique and have been placed on this earth to fulfill a divine
purpose. The holiday skit was emotionally and spiritually touching; everyone in the
audience felt a sense of warmth and joyfulness as the students concluded their performance.
During the finale of the concert, everyone in the room was filled with the holiday
spirit. Attending the concert was a wonderful way to ring in the holidays for the residents at Berger Apartments.
I would like to give special recognition to the parents who were able to attend and
support their kids who performed in this wonderful event. The students and instructors were phenomenal, and we look forward to seeing them perform next year!

HUMOR FESTIVO VINO A LOS APARTAMENTOS BERGER

Antes de la Navidad, los residentes de los Apartamentos Berger fueron honrados con
un concierto muy especial de los días festivos que ofrecieron los estudiantes de la
Escuela de New Haven, Estudios Ambientales de Bernard. Las edades de los niños
fueron de pre-escolares al 8vo grado. Bajo la dirección del Instructor de Música el Sr.
Erin Dooley, un gran grupo de pre-escolares y kindergártenes cantaron gavilancitos para
deleitar a los residentes y a los padres que asistieron el evento.
Después que el coro canto, la banda de la Escuela Barnard dio su presentación. Los
talentosos músicos fueron dirigidos por el Sr. James Tansley. La Banda se destaco con
los siguientes instrumentos: trompetas, clarinetes, saxofones, trombones, flautas,
drones y xilófono. Los músicos se resaltaron en todo el edificio con melodías
melodiosas. Los músicos de destacaron con una serie de música del ayer lo cantaron

emocionante y espiritual. Todos en la audiencia sintieron el calorcito y jubilo cuando los
estudiantes terminaron su audiencia.
Durante el final del concierto, cada uno de los presentes en el salón se sintió llenos
del espíritu navideño. El haber ido al concierto fue una forma maravillosa de brindar el
espíritu festivo a los residentes de los Apartamentos Berger.
Me gustaría dar un reconociendo especial a los padres que pudieron atender y
apoyar a los niños que participaron en este gran evento. ¡Los estudiantes e instructores
fueron fenomenales, y esperamos tenernos el próximo año! o

A Tribute to Augustine “Gus” Cuomo—President of Atwater Senior
Center

Augustine “Gus” Cuomo
April 6, 1929—December 15, 2014
Augustine “Gus” was a retired solider from the United States Navy
and a supervisor of Sergeant and Company in New Haven, CT.
Post-retirement, Gus spent a majority of his time volunteering in the
Fair Haven community at Atwater Senior Center. For approximately
19 years, he was an active and passionate president and volunteer at
Atwater. Gus organized trips to the casino and acted as Atwater’s
designated coffee maker and Bingo Caller. In his spare time, Gus
relished playing cards, especially Pokeno. Gus led a very exciting
and active life. He was an active member of Saint Francis Church
and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served on the
Board of Commissioners for the Agency on Aging for 17 years. Gus
was a great friend to many people; he was a special man who cared
about the wellbeing of all people. Augustine “Gus” will forever be
missed at Atwater Senior Center.

Augustine “Gus” fue un soldado retirado de la Marina de los Estados Unidos

A Tribute to Dorothy “Dottie” Williams-Harper

Dorothy moved to New Haven, CT in 1941 from Brooklyn, NY. After
earning her academic degrees from New Haven Public Schools and state universities, Dottie served with the City of New Haven as the director of Newhallville
Senior Center (presently known as the Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center) for 25
years. As director, she coordinated for participating seniors’ activities such as
meals, educational trips, classes in the arts and crafts, social and legal assistance, and speakers. Dottie was highly respected and valued for the work she
provided at the center throughout her years as the director.
Dorothy “Dottie” Williams-Harper
July 6, 1935—December 27, 2014
Dottie was very politically active throughout her years. She served as a
Board Commissioner for the Agency on Aging for ten years and as the board’s
secretary for one year. During the time of her passing, she was the co-chair of
the 11th Ward of the City of New Haven.
Dottie and her late husband, Mr. William (Bill) Thomas Harper, were faithful and
productive members of Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ.
Dottie was a member of many committees, but was popularly known for her announcement readings and her signature endings with a pithy quote.
“I will always remember Mrs. Dottie Harper’s positive and vibrant spirit as
well as her glowing smile. In addition, I will always remember seeing Mrs. Dottie
and her husband preparing holiday baskets, every Thanksgiving and Christmas,
for the residents in the community who were less fortunate.”––Migdalia Castro
