To help you make the most of “university
life away from home”, we’ll assist you in
everything you need, even partying with
friends or bureaucratic procedures and
other formalities you will need to deal
with during your stay here. That is, we’ll
show you everything you need to know
to survive this new adventure, plus a
few more tips! This guide will end up by
becoming your best friend.
La Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB)
será tu punto de referencia durante
los próximos meses (¡como mínimo!).
Así que, para que puedas dedicar el
máximo de tiempo posible a disfrutar
de la “vida de universitario lejos de
casa”, te ayudamos en todo lo que
necesites (incluso a salir de fiesta con
los amigos): la burocracia y todos los
demás trámites que tendrás que hacer
durante tu estancia aquí. Es decir, te
enseñamos todo lo que necesitas saber
para sobrevivir a esta nueva aventura.

La UIB es una universidad joven que lleva 35 años
acumulando experiencias. Somos una universidad moderna,
de vanguardia, con experiencia y muy madura, que crece
constantemente y que en los últimos años se ha situado en lo
más alto de los ránquines docentes e investigadores, lo que nos
impulsa a seguir trabajando para que la UIB sea, cada vez más,
una excelente universidad para formarse a lo largo de toda la vida.

Nuestra universidad, desde ahora tu nueva casa, se distribuye
en un gran campus universitario, que se encuentra en Palma de
Mallorca, la capital de las Illes Balears, y en dos sedes principales,
en Menorca y en Ibiza, así como centros universitarios repartidos
en multitud de municipios de Mallorca. De esta manera, nos
tendrás cerca para lo que necesites, estés donde estés.

En la UIB somos alrededor de 13.500 estudiantes, 1.000
profesores e investigadores y 500 personas que trabajan en
administración y servicios. Si la UIB fuera una población, sería la
16ª más grande de las Illes Balears, de un total de 67 municipios.
Nuestras dimensiones y distribución convierten nuestra
universidad en una auténtica ciudad, con servicios necesarios
para tu día a día: cafeterías y comedores, instalaciones deportivas,
bibliotecas, una farmacia, una unidad médica, aulas de informática,
oficinas bancarias e, incluso, una residencia para estudiantes.
Somos conscientes de que adaptarse a una nuevo entorno no
es fácil. Para lograrlo con éxito, en la UIB ponemos a tu disposición
todo un equipo de personas, profesionales y estudiantes, con
una única tarea: facilitarte la estancia en nuestra universidad y en
las Illes Balears. Te ayudaremos a integrarte y te acercaremos los
valores culturales, compartiremos contigo nuestra lengua vehicular,
el catalán, así como también los valores sociales propios de
nuestra Comunidad, para que te sientas como en casa desde el

Our university, from now on your new home, is located on
a big campus in Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic
Islands, and in two main university centres in Minorca and
Ibiza. It also has other university facilities in numerous
different municipalities throughout Mallorca. This means that
we’re close at hand to help, wherever you are.
There are some 13,500 students, 1,000 members
of teaching or research staff, and 500 administrative
and service staff at the UIB. If the UIB were a town, it
would be the 16th biggest one in the Balearics out of the
archipelago’s 67 municipalities.
The UIB’s size and distribution make it an authentic city,
with all the necessary everyday services and facilities: cafés
and refectories, sports facilities, libraries, a chemist’s shop,
doctor’s surgery, computer rooms, banks and even a student
hall of residence.
We are well aware that it is not easy to get used to
a new place. To help you succeed, we have a team of
professionals and students at your disposal with a single
task in mind: to make your stay at the university and in
the Balearic Islands easier. We will help you to integrate,
introduce you to the Balearic’s culture, and share our
working language – Catalan - and our local social values
with you so that you feel right at home from the very outset.

muy distinto, pero después vi que

La UIB cuenta con una residencia

campus universitario. Podrás elegir si

You’ve arrived. What now?
Tus primeros días en la UIB serán ajetreados. No lo
negaremos. La lista de cosas por hacer es larga, y el tiempo,
escaso. Te explicamos, punto por punto, lo primero que
tendrás que hacer al aterrizar en la UIB.
Your first days at the UIB will be hectic, that’s for sure. Your
“To Do” list will be a long one and you won’t have much time.
We’ll explain point by point what you have to do first when you
arrive at the UIB.
1.Notificar al SRI que has llegado.
2.Venir al acto de bienvenida y participar en las actividades
que hemos preparado para vosotros.
3.Reunirte con tu tutor o coordinador de movilidad para
resolver las dudas que tengas.
4.Matricularte de tus estudios en tu secretaría*.
5. Abonar tu carné de estudiante y seguro obligatorio en una
sucursal bancaria del campus.
6.Solicitar tu carné de estudiante a través de UIB Digital.

Las claves de acceso se te entregarán al realizar la matrícula.
7.Empadronarte en Palma.
8.Sacarte la tarjeta del bus urbano.

HOW TO REACH THE UIB
FROM PALMA?
La Universitat de les Illes Balears está situada en la carretera
de Valldemossa, a 7,5 km de Palma. La manera más
económica de llegar al campus es en autobús o en metro.
The University of the Balearic Islands is on the Valldemossa
road, 7.5 km from Palma. The cheapest way to reach the
campus is by bus or underground.

Buses
La línea de autobús que conecta Palma con la UIB es la línea
19, con una frecuencia media de 10 minutos durante el período
lectivo. Para utilizar el autobús a un precio más económico, se
pueden comprar bonos especiales o solicitar la tarjeta ciudadana.
The no. 19 bus connects Palma to the UIB. During term
time, on average there is a bus every 10 minutes. The fare is
cheaper if you buy a special bus pass or a Tarjeta Ciudadana
(Citizen’s Card).
También hay líneas de autobuses interurbanos que conectan
la UIB con otros municipios de Mallorca.
There are also inter-urban buses that run between the UIB and
other municipalities in Mallorca.

Metro
Underground
La línea 1 del metro de Palma conecta el centro de la ciudad
con el campus universitario. Sale de la plaza de España y
finaliza el trayecto en la UIB, por lo que no tiene pérdida. El
metro tarda 13 minutos en recorrer el trayecto entero y suele
tener una frecuencia de 15 minutos en horas punta.
The no. 1 underground line links the centre of Palma to the
campus. It leaves from Plaza de España and the last stop is
the UIB, so you can’t miss it. It takes 13 minutes to cover the
whole route and there is a train every 15 minutes during the
rush hour.

El centro de la ciudad y el campus de la UIB están conectado
por un carril-bici, por lo que también puedes llegar al campus
en este medio de transporte. También puedes subir tu bici al
metro de Palma para transportarla hasta el campus.
There is a bike lane from the city to the UIB campus and
so you can reach the campus by bike. You can also put
your bike on the Palma underground train and bring it to
the campus.

En el campus de la UIB tienes a tu disposición un polideportivo con

Posa’t en marxa!, para que cojas el tono físico que te convertirá en la
envidia de tus compañeros.
On the UIB’s campus there is a sports centre with an Olympic pool,
covered pavilion, fitness room, paddle tennis and tennis courts and
a football field with artificial grass. What’s more, throughout the
whole year you can enjoy a healthy variety of instructor-led activities.

Son las 8 am, y comenzar el día con un par de largos sin salir de la
UIB merece la pena. Ahora toca seguir la jornada con un buen café
acompañado de una deliciosas tostadas. Mmmmm…!
It’s 8am. Starting the day with a quick swim without even leaving the
campus is well worth it. And now it’s time to continue the day with a
nice cup of coffee and a couple of tasty slices of toast. Mmmmm!
Pocas cosas sientan mejor que un buen café por la mañana. Por
eso, a lo largo y ancho de nuestro campus, encontrarás multitud de
cafeterías repartidas por los distintos edificios. Bien cerquita de ti,
te encuentres donde te encuentres. Así mismo, también dispones de
máquinas de venta automática de café y aperitivos, para comer algo
rápido antes de entrar en clase.
Few things go down better in the morning than a nice cup of coffee.
That’s why you can find any number of cafés throughout the campus
in its different buildings. There’s one close by wherever you are.

normal. Don’t worry. You’ll need a diary (among other things) to get

classes, do you?
En la mayoría de edificios de la UIB encontrarás papelerías en las
que podrás adquirir todo lo que necesitas para tu día a día: agendas,
cuadernos, bolígrafos, marcadores o fotocopias, por ejemplo. Pásate

Most buildings at the UIB have a stationer’s shop where you can buy
everything you need for your day-to-day studies: diaries, notebooks,
biros, marker pens, plus photocopies for example. Stop off at our
copying service or the campus book shop so that you have everything
you want. That’s where to go for those notes that your lecturers told
you to get!

classes, but the effort is worth it. In a while you can build up
your strength with a Mallorcan-style snack. If you don’t know what
I mean, you’ve failed the test! Don’t worry though, you’ll soon

En la UIB encontrarás una amplia oferta gastronómica, variada y
económica. Cada día, las diferentes cafeterías del campus preparan
un menú para la comunidad universitaria. Así, cuando salgas de
clase podrás elegir entre seis menús diferentes. Lo complicado
será decidirte, pero porque no sabrás qué propuesta te gusta más.
Además, aparte de los servicios tradicionales de cafetería (bocadillos,
ensaladas, platos combinados…), también podrás comer pizzas,
tapas o kebabs.
At the UIB, you can find a wide variety of reasonably priced cuisine.
Every day the campus’ different cafés prepare a set menu for the
university community, so that when you come out of class you can
choose from six different set menus. The problem is choosing which
one, because you won’t know which you like most. In addition to the
cafés’ usual selection of food (sandwiches, salads, hot dishes etc),
you can also eat a pizza, tapa or kebab.

The UIB’s students are our priority and so we try and make sure you have
everything you need to guarantee the success of your studies. The campus
has some twenty computer rooms in its different buildings to work in when
you do your homework, prepare for practical training or read through your
notes. All of them have Internet connections and they are connected to
printers so that you can print out any document you need. Not having a
printer is no excuse!

You’re on the last leg of the morning’s classes. At least you’ve got a

this afternoon, you don’t want to start the academic year on the wrong
foot. You need to make an effort so that work doesn’t pile up, even at the

Do you need to consult a book?
No, querido amigo. TODO no está en Internet. Parece que Google nos
tiene que dar todas las respuesta. Pero, desafortunadamente (o no),
no las tiene. Al menos, no todas las que quieren los profesores. Para
eso, tenemos bibliotecas.
No, my dear friend, not EVERYTHING is on the Internet. People think
that Google has to come up with all the answers but unfortunately (or
not) it doesn’t have all of them. At least not all the answers that your
lecturers want. That’s why we have libraries.
En la era de Internet, las bibliotecas siguen existiendo. ¡Por supuesto!
Y en el campus de la UIB encontrarás una en casi cada edificio. En
cada una de ellas tenemos obras de consulta general, pero también
referencias especializadas. Libros, revistas científicas (¡también
digitales!), enciclopedias, documentos audiovisuales… En definitiva,
cualquier cosa que busques. Incluso te ofrecemos espacio para hacer
trabajos en grupos reducidos y te prestamos ordenadores portátiles y
libros electrónicos.
Libraries still exist in the Internet age. Of course they do! And on
the UIB’s campus you can find one in almost every single building.
Each of them contains general and more specialist reference tools
including books, scientific (and digital) journals, encyclopaedias and
audiovisual documents. In short, there’s everything you need. There’s
even room to work in small groups and we can lend you laptops and
e-books.

En las Illes Baleares, y en la UIB, tenemos dos idiomas oficiales: el
castellano y el catalán. Éste último, propio de nuestra Comunidad
Autónoma. Seguro que le pillarás el truco rápido, pero te damos un consejo
para acelerar el proceso. Ante la duda, tú sólo di: “Hola! Com anam?”.
There are two official languages in the Balearic Islands and at the
UIB: Spanish and Catalan. We’re sure that you’ll pick up Catalan,
our regional language, very quickly, but here’s a tip to speed up the
process. If in doubt, just say: “Hola! Com anam?”

What a full day! You’re exhausted. It’s time to slow time and devote
a few hours to yourself. Have you got everything you need in your
room?.
De camino a tu habitación en la residencia de la UIB puedes hacer una
última parada. Frente a ésta, además de las instalaciones deportivas,
está la farmacia del campus. Allí encontrarás todo lo que necesites
para tu salud y tu bienestar. Más vale prevenir que curar, como decimos
por aquí. Y de eso, también sabemos mucho, ya que en el campus
también disponemos de un servicio de atención médica.
On the way to your room at the UIB hall of residence, you can stop off
one last time. Opposite it, as well as the sports facilities, you can find
the campus chemist’s shop. This sells everything you need to ensure
your health and wellbeing. Prevention is better than cure, they say,
and we know a lot about all that too, because the campus also has a
medical surgery.

No one can say you don’t look after yourself
It’s a good idea to buy some vitamins at the chemist’s but for them
to work even better, we’ve got a suggestion. How about some yoga or
Pilates classes? Something “easy” to start with.
En Campus Esport, además de la piscina y la sala de fitness, también
podéis asistir a clases dirigidas. Nuestros monitores te darán la
caña suficiente como para que a final de curso puedas retar a tus
compañeros a subir “des Güell a Lluc a peu” (tú pregúntales qué es
y verás qué rápido aceptan el reto). Con el plan ‘Posa’t en Marxa!’
harás clases de spinning, tonificación, abdominales, step, aquagym,
danza del vientre... Empezarás ligero y terminarás a tope.
At Campus Esport, as well as a swimming pool and fitness room, you
should also go to our instructor-led classes. Our instructors will work you
hard so that at the end of the year you can challenge your classmates
to the Güell to Lluc walk (des Güell a Lluc a peu). (Ask what it’s all about
and see how quickly they accept the challenge). With the “Get Moving”
programme, you can do spinning, keep fit, abdominal, step, water gym
and belly dancing classes. You’ll start off gently but end up going full out.

La residencia de la UIB está en el mismo campus, con las ventajas

Al margen de asegurarte de que has pedido el número de
teléfono y has agregado a Facebook a la gente que has
conocido durante tu estancia, sin olvidar que la UIB también

académicos que tendrás que realizar. Con estos, también

Aside from making sure that you’ve asked for the telephone
numbers of people you’ve met during your stay and added
them to your Facebook page (also remembering that the UIB
has a Facebook page, Facebook.com/somUIB), there a few
academic formalities that you should complete. We’ll also
help you with them.
1.Recoger tu expediente académico en secretaría.

de intercambio y continúa durante su estancia. Les apoyamos en
todo para que se sientan como en casa y hacemos actividades
para que conozcan nuestra cultura. En definitiva, les ayudamos a

ser una traba, pero nosotros hacemos de puente para que no
