REFLECTING ON THE WORD…
Were you ever robbed? During my senior year of high
school I was called home one day because someone broke into
our house. My grandfather surprised the robbers and chased
them out of the house, they hit him with the crowbar they used to
break into the house so he was hospitalized for observation. He
insisted that I sleep at home that night to ―protect‖ the house,
which I did but without sleeping. Life changed that day. While
we fixed doors and changed safety procedures, we knew it could
happen again.
Our readings tell us to be prepared (Matthew 24:44) and
―awake from sleep‖ (Romans 13:11) to be ready for Christ‘s
return. We await something good, the way of God‘s peace:
swords become plowshares, spears become pruning hooks; life
without war and God‘s justice, that is, right relationship with God
and all creation. At that time the light that destroys the darkness
of
terrorism, disease,
death,
divorce,
destruction,
addiction, and …fill in the blank… will appear. I long for that day!
We can hasten that day‘s coming by putting on the armor of light
and living the ways of Jesus that we put on in baptism: love,
mercy, truth, humility, patience, modesty, and obedience to the
Word-made-flesh. St. Francis de Sales taught that by living these
little virtues, we could overcome our enemy. Living these virtues
prepares us for the Lord‘s return. Living these virtues makes
Christ‘s presence known. By living these virtues we walk in the
light of the Lord and shine with the light that robs darkness of its
power. Pick a virtue and live it.

REFLEXIONANDO LA PALABRA…
¿Le han robado alguna vez? En mi último año
de high school un día me llamaron de mi casa porque
alguien había tratado de robarnos.
Mi abuelo
sorprendió a los ladrones y los hizo salir de la casa,
no sin que ellos lo agredieran por lo que tuvo que ser
hospitalizado para observarlo.
El insistió que
durmiera esa noche en la casa para ―protegerla‖, lo
que hice sin poder conciliar el sueño. La vida cambió
ese día. Mientras arreglamos las puertas y tomamos
medidas de seguridad, sabíamos que podría pasar
otra vez.
Nuestras lecturas de hoy nos dicen que
estemos preparados (Mateo 24, 44) y ―ya es hora de
despertar del sueño,‖ (Romanos 13, 11) para estar
preparados para el regreso de Jesús. Esperamos
algo bueno, la paz de Dios: sables convertidos en
arados, lanzas en instrumentos de cultivo, vida sin
guerra y con la justicia de Dios, o sea la relación
correcta con Dios y toda la creación. Entonces la luz
destruirá la oscuridad, el terrorismo…
la
enfermedad…la muerte… el divorcio, la destrucción,
y la adicción así como cualquier otro mal que
aparezca. ¡Cómo anhelo yo ese día! Podemos
hacerlo llegar más pronto poniéndonos la armadura
de luz y viviendo como Jesús nos indica en el
bautismo: con amor, misericordia, honestidad,
humildad, paciencia, modestia, y obediencia a la
Palabra-hecha-carne. San Francisco de Sales nos
enseña que viviendo estas virtudes, podemos superar
a nuestros enemigos. Viviendo estas virtudes nos
prepara para el regreso del Señor. Viviendo estas
virtudes Cristo hace su presencia conocida. Viviendp
estas virtudes caminamos en la luz del Señor y
brillamos con la luz que roba el poder a la oscuridad.
Escoge una virtud y practícala.
LA CORONA DE ADVIENTO: PRIMERA VELA

DE LA ESPERANZA – Podemos tener fe porque
Dios es justo y mantendrá las promesas que nos ha
hecho.
Nuestra esperanza viene de Dios. ―Y
nuevamente Isaías dice, ‗Aparecerá del brote de
Jesé, se levantará a gobernar las naciones: y todos
los pueblos pondrán en él su esperanza. El Dios de
la paz los llene de gozo y paz en la fe, para que, por
la fuerza del Espíritu Santo desborden de esperanza.‖
(Romanos 15,12-13)
