Pipeline Markers
Although you don’t see them on a regular basis, we all live
in, work in or visit areas served by natural gas pipelines. Since
pipelines are buried, line markers are sometimes used to
indicate their location, especially for gas transmission pipelines.
These markers also specify 1. What material is transported
in the line; 2. The name of the pipeline operator; and 3. The
telephone number where the operator can be reached in the
event of an emergency.

Recognizing a Gas Leak
Natural gas is safe when properly used. Knowing
what a natural gas emergency is and how to react
will help keep you and your family safe. A gas leak
is usually recognized by smell, sight or sound.
Smell: Natural gas is colorless and odorless.
A distinctive, pungent odor, similar to rotten eggs,
is added so that you’ll recognize it quickly.
Sight: You may see a white cloud, mist, fog, or
bubbles in standing water or blowing dust. You
may also see vegetation that appears to be dead
or dying for no apparent reason.
Sound: You may hear an unusual noise like
roaring, hissing or whistling.
Markers, however, only provide the general location of a
pipeline and should not be relied upon to indicate the exact
position of the pipeline
If you suspect a leak:
• Leave the area immediately.
Gas distribution pipelines are used by local utility companies
like Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation to transport smaller
volumes of gas to local markets.
Most distribution pipelines do not have markers, so it is critical
that anyone planning an excavation activity should contact the
Call Before You Dig hotline by dialing 811 before the digging
starts to have the underground pipelines and any other buried
utilities located. This one call can help prevent injuries and
damage to underground facilities. This is a free service to the
person excavating, and it’s also a Connecticut requirement.

• Call us immediately, toll-free at 866-924-5325
to report a gas leak – or dial 911 if there is an
emergency. Tell us if construction or digging
activities are going on in the area.
• Do not smoke or operate electrical switches or
appliances.
• Report the possible gas leak. Do not assume
someone else will. Provide the exact location,
including cross-streets.
Budget Plan

Recuerde que una fuga de gas normalmente se puede
identificar por el olor, por su aspecto o por el sonido.
Todos vivimos, trabajamos o visitamos zonas donde hay instalados
gasoductos que proveen gas natural, aunque habitualmente no
los veamos. Como los gasoductos están bajo tierra, a veces se
usan marcadores de línea para indicar su ubicación, especialmente
en el caso de gasoductos de transmisión de gas. Estos marcadores
también indican: 1. El material que se transporta en la línea; 2. El
nombre del operador del gasoducto; y 3. El número de teléfono
para llamar al operador en caso de emergencia.
Olor: El gas natural es incoloro e inodoro. Se le agrega
un olor intenso y característico, semejante al de huevos
podridos, para que se pueda identificar rápidamente.
Aspecto: Puede ser visible mediante una nuble blanca,
bruma, niebla, burbujas en el agua estancada o polvo que
vuela. Tal vez también vea que la vegetación parece estar
muerta o muriendo sin motivo aparente.
Sin embargo, los marcadores indican solamente la ubicación general
del gasoducto y no se debe asumir que indican su posición exacta.
Sonido: Tal vez escuche un ruido inusual como un
rugido, un siseo o un silbido.
Los gasoductos de distribución de gas son aquellos utilizados por
compañías locales de servicios como Connecticut Natural Gas
Corporation para transportar volúmenes más pequeños de gas a
los mercados locales. Si sospecha que hay una fuga:
• Abandone inmediatamente la zona.
