 May 20, 2016 Dear Parents, We wanted to take this opportunity to update you on our progress with the cleanup and repair of weather­related water damage in C­Building at Cunha, the newest classroom building on campus. You may recall that during the severe rain storms this past Winter, water leakage around some windows was observed, and we immediately determined the scope of the problem and elected to move students and staff out of the building (to safeguard their health). Since our communication with you on April 1, 2016, we have had a firm that specializes in finding and tracing water leaks perform an analysis of the C­Building. Tracing and finding the sources of water leaks in finished construction is a complicated task; this is further complicated by the need to prevent disturbing other classrooms on campus. Often, what is originally thought to be the cause of the leak turns out to either not be the case or is only one part of the answer. At this time, we still do not have the complete picture of what has caused the building to leak. Testing is continuing, and we expect to have completed scope of work soon so that repair of the building can begin at full speed after school ends in June. Due to the unknown full scope of work, we do not know how long the repairs will take to complete. We are concerned that the C­Building may not be ready for the start of the 2016­2017 school year. In order to ensure that our students are in the best possible facilities given this uncertainty, we are going to place portable classrooms on the Cunha site. The district has undertaken the necessary actions with the State and City to ensure it has the proper permits to allow for the placement of portable classrooms on the Cunha site. We will continue to be in communication with you on a regular basis throughout the mitigation and repair process. Please look for updates on our progress both on the Cunha website, but also on the district website at: http://www.cabrillo.k12.ca.us . The safety of our students and staff is our top priority and will guide all of our decision making process with regards to this situation. Se recordará que durante las tormentas severas en el invierno, la fuga de agua en unas de las ventanas fue notada, y inmediatamente determinamos el alcance del problema y decidimos mover a los estudiantes y maestros fuera del edificio (para proteger su salud). Desde nuestra última comunicación que fue enviada el día 1 de abril del 2016, una empresa especializada en la búsqueda de goteros de agua realizó un análisis del edificio. La tarea de buscar y localizar goteros en una construcción completa es dificil; esto se nos hace aun mas dificil por la necesidad de evitar la perturbación de las demás clases. Muchas veces, lo que originalmente es pensado ser la causa de goteros resulta no ser el caso o es tan solo parte de la respuesta. En este momento, aún no tenemos la imágen completa sobre lo que ha causado el gotero en el edificio. Los exámenes han continuado, y esperamos tener el alcance completo del trabajo pronto para asi poder comenzar las reparaciones después de que termine el año escolar en junio. Debido al alcance completo desconocido del trabajo, aún no sabemos cuánto durarán las reparaciones para que sean completadas. Estamos preocupados que el edificio C no estara listo para el comienzo del 2016­2017 año escolar. Para asegurarnos que nuestros estudiantes estén en las mejores instalaciones dada esta incertidumbre, vamos a colocar aulas portátiles en Cunha. El distrito ha llevado a cabo las acciones necesarias con el estado y la ciudad para asegurarnos que tengamos los permisos apropiados para tener el permiso de la colocación de estas aulas portátiles en Cunha.
