From the Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
On this third Sunday of the Easter season I greet
you in the risen Lord and pray that the mystery of
His resurrection truly fill your hearts with joy and
peace. On this Sunday we have been asked to participate in a second collection for St. Gregory’s
University so that they can provide scholarships for
needy Catholic students. We already have a couple
of students benefitting from these scholarships and
hope to have a couple more for this next school
year. Please be generous.
During this week the anniversary of the dedication
of our church takes place. Bishop Reed dedicated
our Church on April 13th, 1961. This coming
Wednesday is April 13th and you are invited to
assist at one of our three Masses that day. We will
have a 7:00 a.m. Latin Mass, an 8:30 a.m. English
Mass, and a 7:00 p.m. Spanish Mass. I hope that
you will try to make it to one of those Masses that
day as we celebrate this important anniversary in
the life of our parish community. We have very
few members now who remember that day but
those that do are invited to give me their names
because I would like to pray for you and your families in a special way this coming Wednesday. I will
be celebrating the 8:30 a.m. Mass. I will also be
celebrating the 7:00 p.m. Mass this Wednesday and
invite all of the people who have signed up for the
adoration program to please come because it will
be aour first month’s anniversary of having perpetual adoration. It was initiated on March 12th with
Padre Jose del Carmen. Let us offer our Mass in a
special way that day for him and for his intentions.
Please come with your whole family.
This coming Saturday, April 16th, we will have a
retreat for our second graders in preparation for
their First Holy Communions. At 1:00 p.m. they
will celebrate their First Confession. Let us pray
for these children and the other groups of
April 10, 2016
candidates who will also be celebrating their First
Holy Communion later on. The schedule is as follows: April 30th at 2:00 p.m. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION for children in the 2nd through 4th
grade. That same day at 6:00 p.m. FIRST HOLY
COMMUNION for the second graders in our
school.
Father Fasching who has been with us as our associate since late October of last year will be celebrating his birthday this coming Saturday, April
16th. Let us wish him a very Happy Birthday!!
Cards and gifts can be left at the parish office.
Gayle Casey who has been our parish secretary for
the past eight years has decided to retire. Her replacement will start on April 19th and her name is
Alejandra Olmos. We welcome Alejandra even as
we say our sad good-byes to Gayle. Gayle will assist Alejandra for a couple of weeks until she
learns “the ropes” as they say. Again cards for
Gayle can be dropped off at the parish office during regular office hours if convenient.
Have a good week everyone! God bless you.
Sincerely,
Father Timothy Davison
THE RISEN CHRIST
In this Sunday’s first reading and Gospel
we see Peter and the other disciples in action after
the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On trial,
they refused to stop teaching in Jesus’ name, and
they rejoiced at the opportunity to suffer for their
beliefs. On the lake and its shore, face to face with
the Risen Lord, they obeyed his directions and recognized him as he once again ate a meal with
them. There are so many human and almost
homey touches in these readings! The high priest
in the first scene sounds as if he is scolding
naughty students . There is an order to stop speaking in Jesus’ name, but it is evident everyone
knows they will disobey again. And on the lake
shore, we can imagine Peter’s excitement as he
strides out of the water and is greeted by Jesus,
who grins and says, “Come, have breakfast.”
The second reading, on the other hand, is
anything but homey. In this passage from Revelation, John describes a scene in which the same
Lord who fed his friends breakfast here receives
honor and glory from everything in the universe.

Catholic Military Chaplains: A History of
Heroes
Few know that of the five military chaplains to be
awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor; all
were Catholic chaplains. Two of these priests are
also designated as “Servant of God” and their
causes for canonization are currently under way
within the Holy See’s Congregation for the Causes
of Saints. Most people do not know that the first
military chaplain to die in WWII was a Catholic
priest stationed on the USS Oklahoma who during
the attack on Pearl Harbor gave his life so that others might survive, or that one of the statues in
Times Square is of a Catholic chaplain who died
in WWI.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The Gospel today sees Peter and his colleagues after the Resurrection, returning to Galilee
and resuming the family business. They are fishing
by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night,
the mention of darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice. Modern
life keeps darkness effectively under control; much
of the world has been glowing radiantly through
the night for a century. Yet just as surely as the
Risen Christ breaks into Peter’s fishing, so does he
break into the usual patterns of our own darkness,
electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we
are the people of the light.
In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated
in monasteries, parishes, cathedrals, and homes
everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the
darkness and its claims, an act of praise for our
light-bearing God, and a commitment to carrying
the light forward. Sunset is a turning point of our
day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but
still a reminder that one day darkness overtakes us
all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred
ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of
Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday “blackouts,” perhaps in a way as simple as a
whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the
blessings of the day.

Del Párroco:
Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

amigos y parientes alguna estampita religiosa.
