Book Bag Drive
Once again, the St. Vincent de Paul Society is
conducting its Annual Book Bag Drive. The
drive serves needy children in grades K-8. The
parishioners here at St. Bartholomew generously
support the project every year. The cut-off date
to register children for the drive is Tuesday,
August 5. As supplies are usually limited
we cannot help people who do not register
beforehand. The following is a list of supplies:
Back packs/Book Bags
Pens
Pencils
Notebooks
Paper
Colored pencils
Washable markers
Scissors
Elmer’s School Glue and glue sticks
Large erasers
Rulers
The bags will be distributed on Saturday, August
9. Please bring donations to the main entrance
of church or the parish office. Thank you for
your faithful commitment to those in need.

JACKPOT
In our lottery and sweepstakes obsessed culture, it
is common to ask ourselves or others what they would do if
they won. In today’s first reading, Solomon certainly hits the
jackpot. What prize could be greater than having God Almighty
agree to give you whatever you ask for?
Out of all the things he could have asked for, Solomon
chose to ask for understanding, and was rewarded with it. We
would do well to wonder what we would ask for if God made
us the same offer. Actually God does make us the same offer
each and every day, by granting us another day of life, a bit of
the earth’s goods, some gift or ability, some call to goodness,
some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a “prize.” We
should stop and examine what we are going to do with our
prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the
spread of the gospel?

Administrator’s Corner
We wish to thank Omar and Yvette Colbourne and
the team of volunteers who have completed the painting
of the front of the Church and the School. There is still
a lot of painting to do. If you wish to join the team of
volunteers who start work on Saturdays @ 9 AM, please
come by or call the rectory. We are now concentrating
on repairs and maintenance. Therefore, if you have
special skills like plumbing, carpentry, carpet cleaning,
gardening, roofing, etc., and wish to volunteer, please
contact me, Father Andrew at 954-431-3600.
We can also help you to obtain service hours for
your college graduation or as a parent of a child in
private school that requires service hours from parents.
Unfortunately, opportunities for service hours by
minors (under 18 years old), are limited as minors
require supervision by ”virtus” (program for the
protection of children) trained personnel.
Normally there is rush to complete service hours at
the end of a school year. There is a limited amount of
things that can be done in a short period, and unless
there is a special project we cannot utilize a large
number of volunteers at the same time. If you need
volunteer hours it is best to visit the rectory (church
office) and complete a form that tells us the times and
dates you are available and the types of jobs you can do,
and during the year we shall call you.
If it were not for volunteers, St Bartholomew could
not function. Apart from those who volunteer to help
during Masses like choir members and some musicians,
extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers,
lectors and altar servers, there are volunteers who
teach religious education for children and adults, clean
the church, count the collection, decorate the church,
clean linen and vestments, and volunteer at the rectory
(office).
We are always in need volunteers. You may wish to
consider joining any of the above-mentioned groups.
Even if I did not mention a special skill that you have,
you can still offer your service and maybe we do need
help in that area. The Holy Spirit works in mysterious
ways, and God calls his disciples in unique ways.
Love and prayers,
Fr. Andrew
