THE PRACTICES OF LENT: PRAYING, FASTING and ALMSGIVING
LENT begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016. As Catholics we
experience Lent by:
PRAYING: All of the synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) tell us
that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert where he fasted and prayed
for 40 days. Through prayer we seek conversion from our sinful ways and
renewal of our baptismal promises. We can prayerfully enter the season of Lent
by participating in the Eucharist, praying over scripture, private and family prayer
and communal prayer such as the Stations of the Cross.
FASTING is also a form of prayer. Traditionally, fasting has included
reducing the amount of food we eat and abstaining from meat. We fast to allow
our physical hunger to remind us of our spiritual hunger, our need for God. Fasting also reminds us of the needs of the hungry
and poor. We can also fast by holding back from unnecessary buying, accumulating, and wasting. Giving up enjoyable activities
or getting rid of bad habits are also ways of fasting.
ALMSGIVING, the giving of our time, talent and treasure as well as service to others, is another way of experiencing
Lent. Gratitude for what we have prompts us to do something compassionate for those in need. Generosity towards others involves giving not only from our surplus, but also from our substance.
HOW WILL YOU PRAY, FAST AND GIVE THIS LENTEN SEASON?
Season of Lent: Ash Wednesday
Today we begin the season of Lent, a time of preparation for the celebration of the Risen Lord on Easter Sunday. The word
‘Lent’ is derived from an old English word which means ‘springtime.’ The Latin adverb lente means ‘slowly.’ Members of the
Church prepare for the renewal of their baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil. Catechumens, on the other hand, prepare for
Baptism and their full initiation into the church.
In the early Christian community only three ‘mortal’ sins existed: adultery, murder, and apostasy. If a member of the community should be found guilty of one of these sins, he or she entered a process of repentance lasting up to three years. During
this time the person was not allowed to worship with the community, but was prayed over and helped in their return to full
membership and right relationship with the community.
It is, then, appropriate that the Church calls us to repentance with the sign of ashes on our foreheads. From early biblical
times, ashes have been symbolic of repentance for sin and of grief and mourning. They are a visible sign to remind us that we
are dust and to dust we shall return. Ashes call us to "repent and believe the good news.” The Church invites Christians to fast
during Lent. This type of fasting is not simply abstaining from eating. The fasting recommended has a much more radical
scope. It is fasting from sin. It is giving up one's old ways, in order to adopt those of Jesus.

PRAY FOR THOSE YOUNG MEN CALLED TO THE PRIESTHOOD
MASS SCHEDULE FOR
In a recent letter to Fr. John, this seminarian writes:
Hello Fr. John,
I served on the NET team 10 from 2012/2013 and we came to
your parish in Pocatello, Idaho. I actually stayed at your house
when I was there. I was the tall guy on the team and you took us
all skiing to Pebble Creek one day! There are a lot of memories of
our time in Idaho, and at your parish. However, I’m writing to you to
tell you about my outcome after meeting you there.
After my year with NET, I joined the seminary for the Diocese of
Fort Worth. I am currently in my third year and was recounting on
what got me to the seminary. The answer to that, is you. My experience of meeting a different priest is what brought me to enter
the seminary. I remember experiences and places very well, and I
always remember watching the Winter X Games with you each
night, and going to the brewery for dinner and getting a really big
pretzel for dinner along with Paul, who was staying there too from
the team.
I don’t think words can express my experience with you, but
seeing the passion you have for the priesthood and acting like a
normal man, while doing really cool things, drove the calling. I want
to thank you for the experience I had with you and for your priesthood. Please contact me as I would like to stay in touch with you.
Please pray for me as I continue to study at St. Joseph’s in Covington, LA. God bless you.
ASH WEDNESDAY
MASS FOR HEALING This
Mass will take place at Sacred
Heart Church at 8:30am, on February 11. Prayer Ministers will be
available after Mass.
From Father Faucher:
Dear friends,
About 25 years ago I began to write a novel. Many events
and adventures intervened, but finally last summer and fall gave
me the chance to finish it. It is now published. The title is Describing Color to the Blind and it is a story set in Boise in 1988
about a woman named Prissy Duke. It is a book with strong
issues, including sexual abuse, physical abuse, murder, arson
and other things. You can order the book from Amazon.com,
Barnes and Noble or from Outskirts Press.
Also please send this information to people you know who
might be interested. To help promote the book, you might also
ask your local bookstore to carry it. When you travel, ask the
bookstores in airports if they have it.
I do thank all of you for any comments you might want to
make about Describing Color to the Blind and any help you can
give me in getting it out to the public.
Thank you, Father Tom Faucher

THINKING ABOUT SEPARATION OR
DIVORCE? Is your marriage or that of a relative
or friend heading for divorce? Do you know how
to save that marriage, or do you feel helpless?
Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vi with a long i) is
designed to help troubled marriages regain their
health. It helps spouses uncover or re-awaken
the love, trust and commitment that originally
brought them together. The program is highly successful in saving hurting marriages, even bringing reconciliation to couples that have already
separated or divorced. For confidential information about or to register
for the program, beginning with a weekend in Boise on February 26-28,
call 1-800-470-2230 or visit the web site at www.HelpOurMarriage.com
