From the Great Fathers
Excerpt of a sermon by St. Augustine
On the Cover: Pieter Breugel the
Younger, "The Peasant Wedding
Banquet"(1568), Kunsthistorisches
Museum, Vienna.
Happy are we if we do the deeds of which we have heard and sung. Our hearing of them means having them planted in us, while our doing them shows that
the seed has borne fruit. By saying this, I wish to caution you, dearly beloved, not
to enter the Church fruitlessly, satisfied with mere hearing of such mighty blessings and failing to do good works. For we have been saved by his grace, says
the Apostle, and not by our works, lest anyone may boast; for it is by his grace
that we have been saved. It is not as if a good life of some sort came first, and
that thereupon God showed his love and esteem for it from on high, saying: “Let
us come to the aid of these men and assist them quickly because they are living
a good life.” No, our life was displeasing to him. He will, therefore, condemn
what we have done but he will save what he himself has done in us.
We were not good, but God had pity on us and sent his Son to die, not for good
men but for bad ones, not for the just but for the wicked. Yes, Christ died for the
ungodly. Notice what is written next: One will hardly die for a righteous man,
though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. Perhaps someone
can be found who will dare to die for a good man; but for the unjust man, for
the wicked one, the sinner, who would be willing to die except Christ alone who
is so just that he justifies even the unjust?
Pilgrimage with Fr. Lockey
We begin with the Feast of Pentecost and
the 50th Anniversary of the Charismatic
Renewal in the Catholic Church.
The pilgrimage is open to
those seeking a time of
prayer and fellowship in
celebration with the saints
and Holy Father and in
communion with other pilgrims in strengthening our
commitment to strive for
holiness and deeper union
with God. We will have a
special visit to Rome and will
celebrate Pentecost Sunday Mass with our Holy Father, Pope Francis, followed
by an audience with Pope
Francis in St. Peter's Square.
Afterward we travel to Assisi, Siena, Pienza,
Florence, Padua, and Venice, seeing places associated with saints and great events
that allow us to do homage to God.
Come, grow in God with us as we journey
through the land and times of the saints.
Flyers are in the office.
And so, my brothers, we had no good works, for all our works were evil. Yet although men’s actions were such, God in his mercy did not abandon men. He
sent his Son to redeem us, not with gold or silver but at the price of his blood
poured out for us. Christ, the spotless lamb, became the sacrificial victim, led to
the slaughter for the sheep that were blemished – if indeed one can say that
they were blemished and not entirely corrupt. Such is the grace we have received! Let us live so as to be worthy of that great grace, and not do injury to it.
So mighty is the physician who has come to us that he has healed all our sins! If
we choose to be sick once again, we will not only harm ourselves, but show ingratitude to the physician as well.
Let us then follow Christ’s paths which he has revealed to us, above all the path
of humility, which he himself became for us. He showed us that path by his precepts, and he himself followed it by his suffering on our behalf. In order to die for
us – because as God he could not die – the Word became flesh and dwelt
among us. The immortal One took on mortality that he might die for us, and by
dying put to death our death. This is what the Lord did, this the gift he granted to
us. The mighty one was brought low, the lowly one was slain, and after he was
slain, he rose again and was exalted. For he did not intend to leave us dead in
hell, but to exalt in himself at the resurrection of the dead those whom he had
already exalted and made just by the faith and praise they gave him. Yes, he
gave us the path of humility. If we keep to it we shall confess our belief in the
Lord and have good reason to sing: We shall praise you, God, we shall praise
you and call upon your name.
St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430) was a Bishop, theologian and philosopher. Often
called the “Doctor of Grace,” Augustine
taught that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom. Among his great
works are On the Trinity, On Christian Doctrine, The Confessions, and The City of God.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord:

been reassigned by her religious community to continue her theological studies.
Sister will spend the next year or two working to complete her Master’s degree
in theology. Let us accompany Sister with our prayers, asking her patroness to
guide and strengthen Sister for the task ahead. There is a farewell message
from Sister elsewhere in this edition of the bulletin.

Mrs. Becki Brumbaugh has accepted the position of Director of Religious Education, and she has been hard at work preparing for the upcoming instructional
year. Becki has been a member of the parish for a number of years, and has
recently been involved with the R.C.I.A. program, accompanying adults who
desire to enter the Catholic Church. In addition to her duties here, Becki is pursuing her Master’s degree at the University of St. Thomas.
In Sister’s absence, Mr. Toan Pham will take on the responsibility of coordinating
the Vietnamese-language religion classes, which meet on Saturday. Toan has
been a teacher and volunteer for many years, and he knows the program well.
I am grateful for his willingness to accept this task.
Please pray for Becki and Toan as they begin this new service to the Church.
May I ask each of you to consider the possibility of assisting our religious formation efforts at every level: grade school, junior high, high school, and adult?
There is never a shortage of apostolic work, and the cooperation of the lay
faithful is absolutely essential to meet the needs of those who enroll in our parish
programs. Could you give a couple of hours a week to assist our dedicated
staff? You will find their contact information in the parish directory, on the last
page of the bulletin.
Religious education classes will begin soon. It’s never too late to register your
children. Please stop by the office, or give us a call, so that we can help you
with the registration process.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Before and After
Paradigm Construction, the contractor on our church remodeling project, was
kind enough to engage a photographer to take several before-and-after pictures of the church, two of which are published here. We hope to put the complete set on the website in the near future.
With the recent addition of new lighting, the new elements in the sanctuary are
shown to great advantage. We still await the completion of the paintings that
will flank the crucifix. The artist had her first baby in June, and so has been understandably slowed down a bit.
The painting on the left will have an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St.
Joseph. The one on the right will depict St. Elizabeth Seton and the Venerable
Antonio Margil, a Franciscan missionary who brought the Gospel to Texas in the
early eighteenth century.
Dearest Everyone in Christ’s Peace:
What a tremendous Blessing! It has
been a great opportunity for me serving at SEAS as the Director of Religious
Education in the past four years. Time
flies.
Thank YOU ALL for your prayers, love
and support during my term of service
here. May God reward you abundantly!
Please continue to pray for me as I
embark on a new path, going back to
school. Be assured of my prayers to
you and your family as well.
I also would like to ask for the same or
even more prayers, love and support
that you had for me, to our new Director of Religious Education, Mrs. Becki
Brumbaugh, as she is taking this position in place of me.

How to go to Confession
In order to make a good confession, we examine
our conscience, asking God’s help to know our
sins and to be truly sorry for them.
Are you discerning a call to the Catholic Church?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is an inquiry
process for people who are thinking about the possibility of
becoming Catholic. It is for people who have not been
baptized, people of other faiths or people who have been
baptized Catholic but did not complete the sacraments of
Initiation.
Rite of Reconciliation
Priest:
In the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Penitent: Amen.
Bless me, Father, for I have sinned.
It has been (say how long) since my last
confession.
My sins are (confess your sins).
This is a beautiful process, with no pressure to commit to our
faith community, in which interested persons slowly explore
the beliefs of the Catholic Church and discern, over a period of many months, if they desire to become Catholic.
If you are interested, or have a relative, friend or co-worker
who has expressed this interest, please encourage them to
call:
When you are done, the priest will give you spiritual advice and assign a penance. He will then ask
you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example:
Sessions will begin August 7, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. Prayer Room
New inquiry sessions will begin August 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me,
a sinner.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended
Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the
loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all
because they have offended Thee, my God, Who
art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly

Baby Bottle Project
Help us save unborn babies by helping their mothers
choose life! By taking a baby bottle home and filling it with
change or bills and returning to St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton
Church (office or collection basket) during September.
Go in peace
Thanks be to God
For the past forty years the Maternal Assistance Program
has been helping women in crisis pregnancies to choose
life for their precious unborn babies. We hope you will join
us in this life-saving work.
Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were given prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.
God Bless you!!!

Jr. High Students Assigned to Houses
This year, our school is inaugurating a “House System” for
sixth, seventh, and eight grade students. Each student has
been assigned to one of four hoses, each named for one
of the first four Ecumenical Councils in Church history:
Nicea, Constantinople, Ephesus and Chalcedon.
Children’s Choir
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish is forming a new children’s
choir to sing with adults for the 10:30 a.m. Mass beginning in September. All area children in fourth grades and
older are eligible. A voice trial is required. To schedule
this, and for more information, please contact Dr. Douglas O’Neill at his e-mail: [email protected].
A House is a community of learning, friendship and service.
Throughout the year, the houses will be engaged in friendly
competition, encouraging each other to excel in the classroom, on the sports field, and in care and service for those
in need.
2016 – 2017 SEAS Bowling League
Our league play starts tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 29th at
6:00 p.m. We still need a few adult men and women to
complete our teams. We also need substitutes. Beginners and accomplished bowlers are welcome. Please
contact Sandy Janda by email: [email protected] or by calling 281-463-1819.

Hello SEAS Parishioners!
For information about upcoming pro-life activities, you are
invited to call Lia Mclean at 832-766-2634, or contact her
by e-mail: [email protected].
Hopefully some of you had a chance to view the EWTN special
that aired on August 16thIn in which viewers could get a
firsthand look at a Vincentian home visit to someone in need.
We hope you were enlightened as to the work of this ministry
and perhaps even feeling a certain nudge to find out more.
While we continue to be blessed with an occasional new
member to the ministry, we constantly pray that more of our
brothers and sisters in Christ will consider joining us.

families. Our goal is to help develop skills to win the battle
against alcohol, chemical, and porn/sexual addiction.

and family member meetings are held upon request on
the last Saturdays of March, June, September, and December. More information is available at :

St. Gregory the Great
September 3
Pope Saint Gregory I, also known as the Great, was the Pope of the Catholic
Church between 590 and 604 AD. Gregory was born around 540 in Rome. His father was named Gordianus, who was a senator and a Prefect of Rome. Gregory's
mother was St. Silvia, also from a noble family.
Gregory was well educated and excelled in all his studies. He also became an
expert in law and eventually became the Prefect of Rome, just as his father had
been. Gregory was only 33 years old. After his father’s death, Gregory converted
the family villa in Rome into a monastery, known today as San Gregorio Magno al
Celio.
Elected Pope in 590, Gregory was famous for the emphasis he put on missionary
work. He sent many people out to bring many to Jesus and into the Church. Anglo
-Saxon Britain was, at that time, still on the frontier of Christendom. It was Pope
Gregory who dispatched St. Augustine (of Canterbury) to Kent in 597.
Pope Gregory may have also established "cantus planus," known in English as
plainchant. Most today know this style of singing as Gregorian Chant. Gregorian
chant gives us the oldest music we still have in the original form, some dating to
the centuries just after the death of Gregory.
