Spiritual thoughts
from
Ven. Bruno Lanteri,
Founder of the
Oblates
of the Virgin Mary.
Advantages of Spiritual Joy
One is more easily able to resist temptations, while
remaining more tranquil, and one is more far-sighted. The
melancholy man paves a street for the devil, because
melancholy makes one too thoughtful and too reflective.
Act, act, without thinking things over too much. This is a
duty: To rejoice and to do good - this was the fruit of all
the wisdom of Solomon.
Without joyfulness we have to force ourselves. However,
“force does not last.” Consequently, perseverance is
granted to joyfulness. Let us, then, do great things...
- From “On Spiritual Joy” by Fr. Pio Bruno Lanteri

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit
One Easter Sunday
morning, a
missionary priest
was celebrating the
liturgy of the
Resurrection of the
Lord in the village.
During the offertory
procession, along
with the gifts of
bread and wine, a
family presented a
chicken egg.
The priest placed it
at the side of the altar. He offered the gifts and
proceeded with the celebration of the Eucharist.
Then, after Mass, he greeted the villagers and
hastened to prepare his little breakfast, before
heading out to the next village. He was filled with
much joy and gratitude for having received such an
honorable contribution, which would amount to the
extent of his Easter morning breakfast.
For many of us it may seem strange, but for the
people in that area, a much prized egg would
amount to the equivalent of one of our prime rib or
lobster dinners.
The priest intently prepared a little fire and boiled
the egg. He cooled the egg on a small plate and set
it on the table outside his hut. Sitting down at the
table, he closed his eyes and rested his chin on his
hands folded together, to say Grace.
While praying, the inspiration came to mind of his
own littleness in God’s hands, and how the loving
Lord in his greatness provides all good things.
Upon saying Amen, he opened his eyes and saw
three little children standing in front of him, on the
other side of the table. Their eyes were fixed intently
on the priest, although their mouths did not say a
word. With a smile that slowly turned into the widest
grin from ear to ear, the priest seated them at the
table. He carefully cut the hard boiled egg perfectly
into three equal pieces and gave them for the children
to eat.
It was the most fulfilling and delightful Easter Sunday
breakfast he had ever had.
As the priest was on his way to reach the next village,
he experienced a deep sense of amazement and
peace. Becoming overwhelmed with joy he could
hardly contain all the emotion. “God!” he cried out,
“My God! How great is your love!”
With this testimony of the missionary priest, I cannot
help but think of the icon of “The Holy Trinity”, painted
by the famous Russian monk, Saint Andrej Rublev.
This painting of the “Old Testament Trinity” tells us of
the miraculous experience of Abraham and Sarah,
which we read in the Book of Genesis, chapter 18.
The three angels visited them and ate with them, and
blessed them abundantly.
Even more so in our lives, should we realize how we
also are truly blessed: for in the Eucharist, the Lord
does truly visit us each day, and he fills us with his
blessings.
God indeed is great! Let us therefore adore Him and
praise his Holy Name, as He reveals Himself to us as
He truly is: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen!

Intentions of Pope Benedict XVI for the Month of June
General: That international attention towards the poorer countries may give rise to more
concrete help, in particular to relieve them of the crushing burden of foreign debt.
Mission: That the particular Churches operating in regions marked by violence may be
sustained by the love and concrete closeness of all the Catholics in the world.
