Saint Vincent de Paul would like to share a
Dear Friends,
The St. Andrew Parish Lenten Theme for this year is;
Jesus: The Face of Mercy. During lent, take a moment
to recall these words in prayer and as you approach the
image displayed on the cross in the Sanctuary. On Ash
Wednesday we begin out Lenten journey of fasting,
prayer, good works, and repentance. We do these things
knowing that our Heavenly Father’s great gift of Mercy
and forgiveness awaits all of his children who turn away
from sin and seek Jesus: The Face of Mercy.

Restoration Projects to begin soon!!
Two weeks ago, our Pastor, Fr. Paul Sustayta, met with the
Restoration Committee. The Success of the last two Bach
to Broadway Concerts was discussed with Jerilyn McAniff,
Concert Chair, who is the newest addition to the Restoration
Committee. We are grateful to all those who attended and or
sponsored this annual event which net $58,000!
The following projects were approved:
1.The tops of all the pews will be sanded and
refinished to match the existing color.
2.The walls of the vestibule in the church
will be touched up where there is chipping.
3.A marble backsplash will be installed
on the left side altar (The Blessed Mother
Altar) where there is water damage from
flowers or plants left there by brides or parishioners.
Please support our Bach to Broadway Concerts which enable
us to embark on projects to restore our beautiful church.

success story from one of our Parish families:
A mother and three teenage children found
themselves in the process of being homeless.
The father was removed from their home. The
mother and children had no one to turn to so
they ended up at a shelter in Pasadena. The shelter would only
allow them to stay three months as was their policy. At the end of
the three months the family was not ready to move out on their
own. In spite of that, the shelter informed them it was time to
leave. Out of desperation, the family went to St. Andrew Church
for assistance and was able to speak to Deacon Fausto. We started
working with the family and we helped them find another shelter
which saw them through until they were ready to be independent.
We walked with them all the months that it too difficult for them
to be independent. We assisted them with moral and financial
support when needed. Now they have their own apartment, the
children are all doing great in school.
SVDP is able to be available for families in this situation because
of the help we receive from you, our Parish community. Without
your support (financial and volunteering), we cannot do very
much. Please open your hearts and your wallet to Saint Vincent
de Paul so we can continue this work.

2016 World Day of the Sick Mass Hosted by the Order of Malta
Mass & Anointing of the Sick at Cathedral Feb. 13 with
Archbishop Jose H. Gomez
Do you know someone who is facing surgery, or an elderly person
or child who is sick? You are encouraged to bring them to the
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to receive the Sacrament of
the Anointing of the Sick on Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 12:30
p.m. Through anointing, the grace of the Holy Spirit comforts and
strengthens the soul of the sick person. The Mass and Anointing
of the Sick are co-hosted by the Cathedral and the Western
Association of the Order of Malta in observance of the 2016
World Day of the Sick. Archbishop Jose Gomez will preside at the
Mass and anointing. The Mass is also being held in observance
of the Feast Day of Our Lady of Lourdes. For more information,

Help children through challenges by offering
support instead of solutions
Whether it’s a toddler being mean-spirited to a sibling or a teenager
being self-involved and refusing to see the bigger picture, it can be
tempting to try to fix their challenges. Under many circumstances,
the attitude of trying to fix someone is often counter-productive.
Instead of offering a solution to child facing a dilemma, do your
best to listen, ask questions, encourage, empathize and pray. For

OLD PASADENA
At the end of the session, we challenged all the teens to
invite someone with them to Mass as part of their apostolic
mission. The teens wrote names of people they are going to
invite down. Talk to your teen about the person he or she
selected, and ask them why. In your own walk of faith, we
challenge you to also think of someone who has not been
to Mass or been away from the Church to come with you.
Discuss this process with your son or daughter. Discuss both
the joys and the challenges of facing this task.
Year 2: This month at One Eight the teens discussed
evangelization. Evangelization may have a variety of
meanings to the candidates, and may even seem scary.
Evangelization is simply sharing our faith in Christ and the
Gospel with those around us, using both our words and our
actions. One can be an evangelist by telling someone about
Jesus Christ and/or by living out his or her faith in Christ
through his or her actions. Sharing the Gospel of Christ with
other people can seem intimidating, so this session focused
on giving the teens practical ways to both live out and share
their faith with others.
The teens reflected on ways that they can become better
evangelists at school, at home and with their friends. We
challenged them to make concrete decisions about how their
actions will reflect their faith in Christ. We also challenged
them to think about a person they can share their faith in
Christ with. We want to encourage you to also reflect on
whether your words and actions share your faith at home, at
work, and with your friends.

Parent’s Corner: More on what your teen is learning
in One8 Confirmation!
Year 1: This month at One Eight we discussed the four marks
of the Catholic Church. These four marks distinguish the Catholic
Church from every organization in the world. We profess them at
Mass every week during the Nicene Creed when we recite that the
Church is “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.” The teens learned
that these four marks were given to the Church by Christ, and are
not dependent on the people within the Church; essentially, the
Church is one despite disagreements and arguments, holy despite
the sinfulness of its members, catholic because it reaches across all
cultures and barriers, and apostolic because its teaching authority
comes from the apostles who were given authority by Christ.
Youth Day 2016 Just Around the Corner
We are so excited to be attending Youth Day for the second year
in a row on Thursday, February 25th! We have 208 Confirmation
candidates, youth ministry teens and chaperones registered to
attend this year! The theme is #hopebound and we are can’t wait
to debut our t-shirt design to represent St. Andrew this year. In
addition to Mass led by Archbishop Gomez and inspirational
keynote speakers, we will be attending two workshops: Beyond
Boring: Reading the Bible for a Change will be led by Mark Hart
the Executive Vice President for Life Teen International & A Bar
of Hope…Human Trafficking: What it is and How to Fight it! led
by Theresa Flores, a human trafficking survivor, bestselling author,
licensed social worker and founder of SOAP(Save Our Adolescents
from Prostitution).
We will be having a second collection on Sunday, February 21st
at all Masses to help with costs for Youth Day. Each Mass will feature
two, year two confirmation candidates, that will be presenting on
their experience from attending Youth Day last year and the impact
it has had on them. We feel it is a transformative and inspirational
experience that every Confirmation Candidate should experience

3. Un protector contra salpicaduras de mármol se instalará
en el lado del altar izquierdo (altar de La Santísima Madre)
donde hay daños por agua de las flores o plantas dejadas
ahí por las novias o feligreses.

cual nos ayuda en la restauración de nuestra hermosa

la gracia del Espíritu Santo consuela y fortalece el alma de

Sesión de Simulación de Pobreza
San Vicente de Paúl tiene aproximadamente 320 familias
quienes están inscritas para recibir comida que distribuimos
semanalmente desde nuestra despensa de SVDP. Nuestras
familias necesitadas también reciben ropa y juguetes para sus
hijos, cuales son donadas por miembros generosos de San
Andrés.
A menudo recibimos expresiones de agradecimiento de nuestras
familias registradas ya que nosotros como comunidad somos
los instrumentos quienes le traen la comida a sus mesas a veces
cuando no tienen mucho que comer. Aunque la comida que
reciben es importante para ellos, también es importante para
ellos saber que la comunidad de la iglesia de San Andrés se
preocupa por ellos y los lleva siempre en mente.
Queremos que sepan que con la donación a San Vicente de Paúl
usted está haciendo su parte para asegurarse de que podamos
seguir ayudando a todas estas familias en su momento de
necesidad. Gracias por sus contribuciones.

Rincón de los padres: más de lo que su hijo está aprendiendo en One8 Confirmación.
Primer Año: Este mes en One Eight discutimos las cuatro marcas de la Iglesia Católica. Estas cuatro marcas distinguen
la Iglesia católica de todas las organizaciones en el mundo. Nosotros las ejercemos en la misa todas las semanas durante el
Credo de Nicea cuando declamamos que la Iglesia es “una, santa, católica y apostólica.” Los adolescentes aprendieron que
estas cuatro marcas se dieron a la Iglesia por Cristo, y no dependen de las personas dentro de la Iglesia; en esencia, la Iglesia
es una a pesar de los desacuerdos y argumentos, santa a pesar de la pecaminosidad de sus miembros, católica a causa de que
llegua a través de todas las culturas y las barreras y apostólica porque su autoridad de enseñanza viene de los apóstoles que
se les dio autoridad por Cristo.

que no ha ido a Misa o a estado lejos de la Iglesia, para que lo acompañe. Comenten sobre este proceso con su hijo o hija.
Discuta tanto las alegrías y los desafíos de enfrentar esta tarea.
Segundo Año: Este mes en OneEight los adolescentes discutieron evangelización. Evangelización puede tener una
variedad de significados a los candidatos, e incluso puede dar miedo. Evangelización es simplemente compartir nuestra fe
en Cristo y el Evangelio con los que nos rodean, utilizando tanto nuestras palabras y nuestras acciones. Uno puede ser un
evangelista hablándole a alguien acerca de Jesucristo y/o por vivir su fe en Cristo a través de sus acciones. Compartiendo el
Evangelio de Cristo con otras personas puede parecer intimidante, por lo que esta sesión se centró en dar a los adolescentes
formas prácticas de tanto vivir y compartir su fe con otros.
Los adolescentes reflexionaron sobre formas en que pueden ser mejores evangelistas en la escuela, en casa y con sus
amigos. Los retamos en tomar decisiones concretas sobre cómo sus acciones serán el reflejo de su fe en Cristo. También los
desafiamos a pensar en una persona que puedan compartir su fe en Cristo. Queremos animarlos a que reflexionen también
acerca de sus palabras y acciones de fe que comparten en el hogar, en el trabajo, y con sus amigos.
¡Día de la Juventud 2016 a la vuelta de la esquina!
Estamos muy contentos de estar asistiendo al Día de la Juventud, por segundo año consecutivo el jueves, 25 de febrero!
Tenemos 208 candidatos de Confirmación, y adolescentes de la pastoral juvenil y acompañantes asistiendo este año! El
tema es #hopebound y no podemos esperar para hacer el debut de nuestro diseño de la camiseta para representar nuestra
Parroquia San Andrés de este año. Además de la misa dirigida por el Arzobispo Gómez y uno de los predicadores principales,
estaremos presentes en dos talleres: Aburrido Para nada: Lectura de la Biblia como un Cambio dirigida por Mark Hart el
vicepresidente ejecutivo de Life Teen Internacional y Una Palanca de Esperanza ... Trata de el Trafico de Personas: ¿Qué es y
cómo luchar contra ello! dirigida por Teresa Flores, una sobreviviente del trafico, una autora reconocida, trabajadora social
con licencia y fundadora de SOAP(Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution).
Vamos a tener una segunda colecta el domingo, 21 de febrero en todas las misas para ayudar con los costos del Día de
la Juventud. En cada misa, dos candidatos de confirmación del año dos, presentarán su experiencia de haber asistido al Día
de la Juventud del año pasado y el impacto que ha tenido en ellos. Creemos que es una experiencia transformadora y de
inspiración que cada Candidato de Con-confirmación debe experimentar en su camino de fe. Le damos las gracias por su
